IntroductionThe ND 110017, Magnetic Tape Drive and the ND

105600 Magnetic Tape Controller constitute the latestsolution offered by ND to provide a fast and securebackup solution for ND's high—capacity disks. Theformatter and drive are delivered by StorageTechnology Corporation.

The magtape is offered with a new FlLESTORE con—figuration. As a complete backup solution, the mag-tape may be installed together with one or two fixed—diskdrives.

Product descriptionThe ND 110017 Magtape comes complete with tape

transport, formatter, power supply and resident micro—diagnostics in a single self—contained unit.

The unit offers both 50 ips start/stop capability and a100 ips streaming mode, and provides ANSI—compatible 1600 and 6250 bpi recording formats,

New technology is used extensively, featuring a new,reliable mechanical tape—buffering system that is capa—ble of handling the stringent 6250 bpi recording and, atthe same time, provides the convenience of automatictape threading.

The tape transport design eliminates the need forcostly vacuum columns and is quiet enough fortheoffice environment. The capstan and reel servo systemtake advantage of microprocessor control and LSI elec—tronics. Digital tachometers provide necessary feedbackto avoid the need for adjustments. GCR recordingtechnology permits high-capacity disk dump/restoreapplications. A 2400 foot. 10.5-inch reel of magnetic tapecan hold up to 180 megabytes of data, and a 3600 footreel up to 260 megabytes - three times as much asphase recording (PE), The instantaneous transfer rate at50 ips is up to 312.5 kilobytes per second, and 625 kilo-bytes at 100 ips.

In addition to capacity and throughput, the 6250 bpioffers a considerable improvement in read/writereliability with 1 and 2-track on-the-fly error detectionand correction

Serviceability and maintainability are provided throughextensive resident microdiagnostics capable of isolatingfailures to the most probable field—replaceable unit. Rou—tine maintenance has been reduced to a minimum —scheduled cleaning. All electrical and periodicmechanical adjustments have been eliminated.
