Violet Avenue came together about a year ago, with just Ben Briones on guitar and Isabel Martinez on vocals. After looking around their high school for a bassist they found Jaime Piña. After finding a drummer that couldn’t make practices, they decid-ed what was the use of that? Jaime had the great idea of having Isabel’s little brother by the name of Adam Martinez play drums since he would always hang out at their practices anyway. They’re currently recording a new 7 song demo which should be out in about two months, so be on the lookout for that. They’ve worked with many production companies including: Garage Prod., MDX Prod., Middle Finger Prod., and Restless Entertainment out of Laredo, TX. Re-cently Violet Avenue was invited to play the Downtown Riot, it was quite an experience for the young 4 piece,

Isabel Martinez: “We are all young and people are amazed to hear our unique sound at such a young age.” When people ask what does Violet Avenue sound like? I like to say “We sound like Tsunami Bomb and No Doubt back in their glory days.” It’s a little different I guess with me as a singer, I once had this guy ask me why I was wearing a VIP pass when we were going to play at The Boiler Room, I told him I was the singer for Violet Avenue and he just said, “But you’re a girl” I’m guessing that makes a difference. We always hear about how we should get a screamer in our band, Why? Is always my response , we like the way we sound, may not sound like everyone else out there, but we like it, and that’s what matters.

Be sure and check out Violet Avenue at Mag-X’s MIXED UP night taking place May 24th @ Art Awakenings in McAllen .(See inside Front Cover)

Note: Here at Mag-X we thoroughly support the idea of females in bands, in fact we encourage it because it’s hot!

Tool-10,000 Days

They are Back after 5 years with another great album that picks up where Lat-

eralus (their last album) left off. We’ve been listening to this CD for 2 days straight and we ain’t tired of it yet. Our favorite track for the last 5 hours has been track 10 “Right in Two.” Holy Sit this song is beautiful and powerful at the same time. WARNING: Listening to this CD WILL make aspiring musicians feel use-

less. Tool has the amazing ability to take awkward time signatures that

shouldn’t sound good, and make them sound beautiful and haunting.

76 minutes of amazing musicianship and the most inventive packaging we’ve

seen on a CD, that’s what you get when you buy 10,000 days

Eli Roth’s brutally violent masterpiece, Hostel set a new level for the horror genre. The story of 3 backpacking friends who travel through-out europe in search of hot women and sex, what they find is a secret club of severe torture and gruesome deaths. If you saw the film at the theatres then you did not get to see the (unrated) DVD version. Along with the usual goodies a dvd carries, (commentaries, behind the scenes) you get the director’s cut of the film which has more blood, more flesh, more oozing eyes!

EL ENMASCARADO DE PLATAWhen you think of professional wrestlers, which ones come to mind? Stone Cold Steve Austin? Shawn Michaels? The Rock? How about Ric Flair, Sting or Hulk Hogan? All of these wrestlers have a huge follow-ing of fans, and are known worldwide as true “icons” of the squared circle. Put them all together and

you wouldn’t even come close to the immortal legend of Mexico’s most famous “luchador”. He was known to the world as “El Santo,” Born September 23, 1917, Ro-dolfo Guzman Huerta has been referred to as ‘the greatest legend in Mexican sports”. Be-loved world wide, and spanning an amazing career of five decades that crossed over to comic books & films.

He started wrestling sometime in 1934, using the names of Rudy Garza, El Hombre Rojo, & El Murcielago II, although none of these identities seemed to click, it wasn’t until his manager decided to form a team of wrestlers, all dressed in silver. On June 26, 1942, El Santo was born. He was a “tecnico” ( good guy/ baby face) wrestler from the start, applying his classical wrestling skills as well as ju-jitsu. Capturing the hearts of the wrestling world, in the early 1950 he first crossed over to comic books, and by the end of the 50’s he began his film career. Immensely popular since their beginning, they are in true form campy, classic B-movie schlock at it’s best. The monsters are hideous, and not in a good way. Some of the fighting is awful, and the music always seems louder that it should be. But that is exactly what we love about them, the fights, the voluptuous-ness of the women, and the cheesiness of the villains. El Santo himself comes of across as the classic hero, always doing the right thing, fighting the good fight. He stopped planes with his bare hands, went back in time, even bullfight-ing. His character was always heroic to the very end, always win-ning the battle and the girl. In a few of the

films he co-starred with another famous Mexi-can luchador known as “Blue Demon”. In some of the first films Blue demon played the villain, in later films they fought together. Al-though El Santo & Blue Demon was a never good friend in real life, they had respect and admiration for each other. These films have gained a huge cult fol-lowing worldwide, still playing to this day in theatres in places such as US, Japan, England, France and Tokyo.

Mag X writer Jes once met the real “El Santo” in Mexico in the early 70’s. He got to shake the luchador’s hand and has not washed his hand since.

SUMMER MOVIES!Or as we like to call it, (is that a pickle in there?) They are almost here…Summer Movies!! And MAGX has chosen two more movies YOU MUST

SEE! NO EXCEPTIONS! They are:

NACHO LIBRE (June 2) – Hey talk about wrestlers! Jack Black is back & this time he is a Mexican luchador! What’s the plot? Who cares! It’s Jack wrestling! What more do you need to know?!?!

Lady in the Water (sum-mer 2006)- Paul Gia-matti stars in M. Night Shamaylan’s newest film. A modern day fairy tale about a man who finds a woman in a pool, only to realize she is actually a character from a bedtime story. Like any M. Night film, expect the unexpect-ed.

“Tools have always been avail-able and accessible at my disposal to work with and ex-press myself. I slowly developed content and what was really important in my work. I wanted to express my bleeding heart so that we as a society could become aware of the ill that we are doing to ourselves and others. I love to use my art as a tool so that we, as a society can become aware of our flaws and feel what we have so easily dismissed. I believe we must all become aware of each others pains and joys to feel the true depth of what makes life so important. With my art I’m free to create my own world of release-ment where I can reflect and explore my inner thoughts and emotions. The art I create al-lows me to represent how I view the world and the impact that embodies me to provoke others. I strive to use my art to aid me in creating a better understand-ing of how I can enrich my life to enjoy the smaller things, but I also want to fuel the meek shad-

ows that sleep heavily within the somber souls of humanity. Feel. My art is who I am. I allow the cold truth to push my art to the limits, to make some people uncomfortable. I want to show people what they don’t want to see with my art. Twisting my visions into something more to wonder and think about. My art bleeds until it scabs over and heals. I believe it is the most beautiful feeling to give birth to a piece of artwork when it involves a story of pain; It’s as if only then it has a soul.“

MagX: What does Threat of Tomorrow mean to you all?TOT: The name represents terror or a form of WARNING!!

MagX: With you’re influences being a range of punk and metal, How do you make these two feuding genres work?TOT: It’s simple good riffs with soul not to leave out the dynamics on the drums.

MagX: You all have played in various locations, which place in particular has the best music scene in your opinion?TOT: Well if you mean city I would say Austin, TX; but if you mean venue I would have to say my playground Chapa’s Bar The Pit just cause I think it’s up and coming.

MagX: What do you think could better the RGV music scene?TOT: Support from the Radio and TV Stations.

MagX: With some bands other art tends to influence their music, do you all have other inspirations such as writers, film makers, or painters?TOT: Ours would be feelings and everyday life.

MagX: What do you think sets this band apart from most the other ones?TOT: I think the fact that it is a taste of old school punk metal riffs and soul.

MagX: When playing in a rock band especially live, you tend to sweat a lot, what deodorant do you all use to fight the dreaded rock stench.TOT: Secret pH balanced for a man made for a woman.

MagX: Gatorade or H2O?TOT: Gatorade

MagX: This band along with everyone else in the RGV are myspace.com members, What is your take on all the recent controversy regarding the web site?TOT: It goes in one ear and out the other.

MagX: Groupies can become an issue, do you all have group-ie repellent? Because a sanitary band is a good band.TOT: SEX, DRUGS, AND ROCK-N-ROLL!

MagX: These rising gas prices have grounded a lot of touring bands, from your calendar it looks like you all are going to California, Does it effect you all? Or did you all take precau-tionary measures?TOT: No, we see it as a vacation which in the end means time to spend some cash and not feel bad about it.

MagX: You have one fantasy tour, with 4 artists and you all open the show, Who would you pick?TOT: Bad Religion, Slayer, Korn, Iron Maiden.

MagX: In this monotonous world how does Threat of Tomorrow keep away from being bored?TOT: The sweet kiss of MARY JANE!

Brownsville has a great music scene. Mag X has had the pleasure of checking it out on several occasions. One of the bands tearing shit up is Threat of Tomor-row. We asked them some questions, they gave us some answers. Brace Yourself.

“The music I write comes straight from the experience. I’ve been through everything I sing about in some form or another. I only want people listening to understand or re-late to it. I’m not trying to write hit songs or go platinum. I just want to do what I love and see people enjoying them selves. Basically I’m just like every other person in the bar. I think about sex, alcohol, and how to keep myself from going crazy.”

MYSPACE rocks! Oh come on people, you know it does. You get to meet some amazing people. Sure some hot 19-year-old co-ed you talk to might actually be a 47-year-old man, naked in front of his computer, smearing peanut butter on himself. But trust us, there are some really cool “actual’ people on MYSPACE. Who? Glad you asked. MagX would

like to introduce our readers to Asia Devinyl. Hailing from our nations capital comes this 5’5 Goth and glamour bombshell. One look and that’s all you need to fall in love with Asia. And not only is she gorgeous, she is actually one of the nicest people we have ever had the pleasure of meeting. On to the interview!

MagX: 10 Words or less describe Asia DeVinyl.

Asia: Silly, adventur-ous, nurturing, creative, flamboyant, opinionated, procrastinator, respon-sible, self-confident.

MagX: Your pics are both classy, glamorous, and hot at the same time. How did you choose this style? Why Goth glamour?

Asia: I started model-ing when I was 16. But I was under contract, and wasn’t able to do any-thing with my hair, nails or skin without permission. (And this was difficult for me because in my actual life, I was a hard-core

Goth Girl.) So when I was 18, and my contract ex-pired, I went a little crazy in my rebellion. Every-thing had to be patent leather, vinyl, chains, a really harsh look, actually. It took me several years to settle into a softer, more sensual style. And from the Goth/Fetish genre, it was an easy crossover to the Pin-Up style. But I could never cross over all the way. I think the subtle blend of looks is what gives my shots their unique “Asia-ness.” Basically, if I can wear corsets and high heels, and sparkly things, I’m a happy girl! But who knows what I’ll do next? Maybe I’ll do

some Mexican Wrestling mask modeling...

MagX: Your web site started this year, how is that going?

Asia: So far, so good! This is actually my second web site. But the first one was bought by a Hong Kong company when the URL fees lapsed, and was offered back to me for $10,000! But I have high hopes for asiadevinyl.com. I will be selling 8X10’s very soon, and as soon as I have a high enough content back prepared, I hope to have a members web site, too.

MagX: We actually met

Page 19: MAGX # 9 May 2006

on Myspace, What is the freakiest/weirdest piece of email that you have received?

Asia: Ha-ha! Well, there have been some whoppers, to be sure. But the best one came in about a week ago... it read: “I just wanted to ask if YOU do FINANCIAL DOMINATION I know I am just a pa-thetic subhuman wimp and seriously seriously

SCUM on the soles of your boots. I am not human and know my place. I am completely HELPLESS as YOU DRAIN all of my BANK ac-counts and cards (FI-NANCIAL RUIN) as YOU laugh and laugh at my WEAKNESS to stop YOU Please use me up I deserve POVERTY

Me= scum beneath your feet.“

Asia: I might write that

guy back actually...

MagX: What advice would you give to an aspiring “Alternative” model?

Asia: I would first tell him or her to make a profile on one of the several “ModelPlace” websites, and look in their area for reputable photographers. Make sure they come highly recommended, and that they work trade

for print. This will help a model to build their portfolio. But be care-ful! There are a lot of freaks out there, and you need to make sure that your working with the right ones.

MagX: We’re at a bar and just made a drink called the Asia Devinyl! What goes into this cocktail?

Asia: Dark spiced rum for sure, and maybe

some sour cherry pucker... mixed with Splenda Diet Coke. Garnished with gummy worms.

MagX: How do you handle any and all of your critics? With words, or 2X4’s? Asia: Actually, critics don’t deserve either. My time is too precious to waste on people who have nothing better to do with their

Page 20: MAGX # 9 May 2006

time than to try to ruin my fun! I love my job, and the people I have been fortunate enough to work with, and that’s what’s important to me.

MagX: 5 things you can’t live without. Sorry only 5!

Asia: Rhinestones, corsets, my family, my friends, and sadly, my computer.

MagX: OK so you have a web site and a great career going, where do you see yourself in 10 years?

Asia: Hopefully by then, my members site and clothing company relationships will be

feeding each other, and I can spend my time traveling from event to event, signing prints and meeting my fans. I do this whenever I get the chance to now, and I really enjoy it.

MagX: Name 5 people you absolutely must meet before you leave this earth?

Asia: Elvira! Johnny Depp, Christopher Walken, Crispen Glover, and David Bowie.

MagX: Ever think about getting into TV? Maybe as a show host? Or even movies?

Asia: Funny you should ask... I’ve heard a ru-

mor that Elvira is shop-ping networks to host a new reality show. She is actually looking for an understudy! The winner would get a 1 year contract to portray Elvira at various events. I would KILL for this gig! (And I mean kill.) That would be like a dream job. So now, I’m looking for the casting calls, because while I generally loath reality TV, I think this could be a lot of fun! As far as movies are concerned, I wouldn’t turn down the right script. Captain Jack Sparrows love interest, perhaps?

MagX: You just recently got back from Las Ve-gas, how was that?

Asia: Fantastic! I attended the Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekender (http://www.vivalasvegas.net/) and I had a blast! This was my second year attending the event, but I had a lot more fun this year for sure! I got to meet many of the other Pin-Up models such as Kay O’ Hara, Dolly Esquire, Dayna DeLux, Miss Mia Vixen, Frankie Sin, and the world famous Suicide Girl Amina Munster. And we all got drunk together! I was so happy that there wasn’t any snobbish-ness or catty games. Someone called us “Pin-Ups Gone Wild”...

MagX: Finally where

other than myspace and your web site can you be found on the net?

Asia: I am the of-ficial spokesmodel for http://www.shaggys-customs.com/, and I work closely with Les Slenning of http://www.hotroddolls.com/, who is an amazing pho-tographer. I will shortly be announced as the Official Psycho Charger Psycho Girlie at http://www.psychocharger.com/, which I’m really excited about! They are one of my favorite bands! I’m scattered all over various clothing companies and pho-tographers websites, and I try to keep all of them listed on my site.
