EditorialDear Reader,

The much awaited South West monsoon has hit the coast of Maharashtra. With the meteorological department forecasting a normal monsoon this year, there is high optimism for Maharashtra’s burgeoning economy. Monsoon is a key to determine agricultural output, inflation, consumer spending and overall economic growth. A normal rainfall signals growth and prosperity, increasing food produce and thus keeping the inflation in control, reducing the power and water shortage, boosting the industrial production which in turn eases the pressure on the government's kitty. We hope this monsoon has a lasting positive impact for the investors in the state.

In this edition, we have covered one of the fastest growing regions in the country, Pune as our district profile. The district is well known for it being an automobile hub and is often referred as the ‘Detroit of India’. The electronics and the metal industry majors have a strong presence in the belt. The district is also famous for its educational universities, colleges and institutes.

Also in this edition, we meet one of the state’s brightest businessmen, Shri Purushottam B Agrawal. He is the founder and Vice Chairman of Ajanta Pharma, a specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the development, manufacture and commercialization of pharmaceutical products. They employ over 4000+ people worldwide and have their presence in over 30 countries.

We hope that these articles are informative and help you in giving a perspective for your business strategies.

Decoding the DNA Success Trail of Ajanta Pharma

Interview

Ajanta Pharma is a specialty pharmaceutical company engaged in the development, manufacture and commercialization of pharmaceutical products. They employ over 4000+ people worldwide and their products are sold in over 30 countries. Ajanta operates with 5 state-of-the art manufacturing facilities that produce high quality pharmaceutical products. They focus on commercializing unique generic products and pioneering synergistic combination products in the therapeutic areas of anti- malarial, cardiology, dermatology, gastroenterology, musculoskeletal, ophthalmology and respiratory.

Committed to patient care since 1973, Ajanta Pharma is a fully-integrated pharmaceutical company with headquarters in Mumbai, India. They have an advanced Research & Development Centre for API synthesis and finished formulations of different dosage forms. Their focus on specialty segments in India and simultaneous opening of new international markets have been the key growth drivers for them over the years. They also engage in contract research for leading multinational pharmaceutical companies to expand their revenue base.

The MahaConnect team in its endeavor to honour the successful businesses in the state, contacted Shri. Purushottam B. Agrawal, founder and the Vice Chairman of the company for a brief interview. Below are the excerpts of the Shri Agrawal’s interview with the MahaConnect team.

MC — Shri. Agrawal, how did it all began? What were your reasons for venturing in to the pharmaceutical market?PA — Well, I graduated in Bachelor of Pharmacy, from Nagpur University in 1973. Post my graduation, I was placed in a pharmaceutical multi-national company as a Trainee. We had our own family business and elders in my family suggested of opening a medical store. But, I had a vision to enter in to completely different and challenging terrain!

I did some extensive research on the various market opportunities which were present in during that time. I identified a gap in the Aurangabad region for repackaging of OTC pharmaceutical products. Thus, Ajanta Pharma started as a repackaging unit in 1973 with owned capital of INR 10,000/- & loan from State Bank of India of INR 10,000/- under educated unemployed scheme. We launched four products under its own brand name for repackaged pharma items

In the year1979, we set up a factory on a small half acre plot in Chikalthana, MIDC to start manufacturing. Our first manufactured product was launched – PinkooGripe Water, making a mark in the industry by deviating from the easy path of following the leaders in gripe water industry. As we grew in expertise and confidence, we launched more brands and subsequently they became popular in Maharashtra & all nearby states.

MAHACONNECTJune, 2013

Over the course of last three decades, we have often taken the path which was less travelled. Today, we focus more on launching innovative products. We were the first in the market, for Patient Convenience & Compliance.

We are extremely proud of our strong back-up of R&D with 300+ scientists working untiringly to create new products. Not to forget, our team of 4000+ Ajantaitesworking across the globe . I would also like to mention that today 64% revenue comes from exports, earning precious foreign exchange!

When I look back into our foray into Pharmaceutical market in the Marathawada region, it gives me immense pleasure to tell you about the large employment opportunities this sector has provided especially for this region. And more importantly, there is still so much scope for innovation and opportunity to serve the ailing mankind across the world.

MC — In the current market scenario, what are the challenges faced by the pharmaceutical sector? How does the new industrial policy of Maharashtra, benefit your business model/investment strategy within the state? PA — Like every other market in the world, there are challenges in the Maharashtra domain as well. There as certain issues like the cost of innovation is increasing with more stringent regulatory requirements. Also, there is increasing pressure from governments to control prices of medicines in spite of high cost, there are delays in getting regulatory approvals for products and ever increasing cost of manufacturing in view of new regulatory requirements. I am sure some of these challenges are being address by the state’s policy makers.

The new industrial policy has come at a very appropriate time for the sector. The policy features like the investor facilitation cell for ease of business is a very good concept, and we as a part of the industry welcome this move. Also, we have greatly benefitted from the mega project incentives for projects like ours. Other incentives like Stamp duty and electricity duty exemptions have also been crucial for our business plans.

MC — How do you rate Maharashtra as an investment destination for the nature of your sector? What are its competitive advantages vis-à-vis other states?PA — Maharashtra historically has been the most progressive state in the country. It has built strong infrastructure through Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC), a big boost for small and new entrepreneurs. The state has come in leaps and bounds to improve its infrastructure capabilities.Today, it takes only seven hours to reach a container at Mumbai port from Aurangabad. With its close proximity to international market, the state’s geographical position is of a natural advantage.

Availability of skilled labour at affordable cost, especially in the region of Marathawada is massive advantage for any sector. The state is blessed with abundant natural resources. On the top of it, uninterrupted and regular supply of power and water in spite of many difficulties has led to increase investor confidence.

Categorically, I would like to mention the single most important factor for its competitive advantage, is its infrastructure which is the key for any industrial development. MIDC has done an excellent job on this!

Skill Development

India is one of the fastest emerging Knowledge and Manufacturing base economies of the world. Around the world, organizations struggle to compete in increasingly global markets. One key response to competition is the effort to improve capabilities and skills, including through technological upgrading and employee training. It has become imperative that the organizations and the nation at large invest in the skill development of the working population, which will help in sustaining high GDP growth.

Maharashtra is the economic superpower of the country which has attracted close to one-thrid of the FDI in India since April, 2000. It has been a first choice destination for both the domestic and foreign investors. The service sector contributes around 61% and the industries nearly 28% of the GSDP. With the ever expanding industry and service sector base, there is a major opportunity for employment generation.

The government of India formed National Council on Skill Development under the Chairmanship of Prime Minister and also, National Skill Development co-ordination board under the Chairmanship of Dy. Chairman Planning Commission. The GoI has set a target of upgrading the skill set of nearly 50 croreworkers by 2022. The state for Maharashtra has been set for 4.5 crore with nearly 45 lakh people being trained per year. To undertake such initiatives further, a Skill Development Council under the Chairmanship of Hon. Chief Minister of the state and a Coordination Committee under the Chairmanship of Chief Secretary.

To take this initiative further, the State government is considering a proposal to set up Industrial Training Institutes (ITIs) in every industrial area in Maharashtra to cater to the growing demand of skilled workforce by the industries, Hon’able Chief Minister Sh. PrithvirajChavan said.

"Several industries and corporate houses are investing in Maharashtra and the industrial sector is growing at a rapid pace in our state. These industries are creating huge employment opportunities for youth, especially those from rural areas and there is a need of skilled human resource. Setting up ITIs on the premises of industrial sectors would help in meeting the demand of industries in a more organised way," he said.

He was speaking at the inauguration of the administrative building and hostel building of ITI Lonavala, around 65 km from Mumbai. Sh. Chavan also inaugurated the Skills Training Academy, set up by the government in partnership with the Taj Group on the ITI campus.
