PRESIDENT’S NOTES – Jenny Holling i everyone,

Our U3A was on full display during Seniors’ Weee in October, showcasing a variety of creatve actvites. It is a celebraton of all that is positve about partcipatng and staying actvely engaged with learning and social actvites.

Special thanks to those groups that partcipated, in partcular,

Circle Dancing, Script Writng, Music Ensemble, Remembering - The Pity of War, and the Photographic Exhibiton for providing us with the platorm to showcase our organisaton to the broader community. Thanks also to the Tutors for their generosity of spirit in providing the opportunity for their class members to apply what they havelearned in a meaningful way. To all those who contributed, your eforts are greatly appreciated.

AGM. Our AGM is on Thursday 15th November (see advertsement). I encourage everyone to come along and be informed about the challenges and directon, as we transiton into 2019.

At the AGM, a new Commitee will form and will need to meet the challenges that our organisaton faces. These include cuts to funding by the Government, considerable tghtening of the terms of reference for Grant opportunites and the fact that program support for Victorian U3As will notcontnue afer 2019. All these variables impact our fnancial viability and we look to our Commitee and members to provide the creatve thinking, problem solving, and support

to ensure our sustainability into the future.

Thanes to Tutors and Volunteers: The spirit of volunteering is the basis of our organisaton and has been on display in 2018 across all areas. I would like to thank all volunteers for their contributons. Special thanks to our Tutors, Let’s Do Team Leaders, Coordinators, Admin Staf, Events, Forums, Volunteering, IT and Accommodaton Teams that provide the vital educatonal and social structure that underepins ourframework. Your commitment is sincerely valued by us all.

Newsleter. One key area is communicaton and I would like to thank Graham Oliver, our Newsleter Editor who is stepping aside from his role, but has kept us informed of all the events on our social and educatonal calendar. Also, thanks to Ian Mackay for his contributon and assistance with the Newsleter.

Thanes to Commitee. 2018 has been a productve and busyyear during which we have achieved progress in many areas. It has been a privilege to be part of a truly amazing Commitee and I wish to ofer an enormous thanks to this team who have been involved in the policy reviews, governance and decisionemaking with such enthusiasm and dedicaton.

Our U3A Melbourne City is the frst U3A founded in Australiaand has been operatng since 1985. Over these 33 years, we have adapted to changes in society and remained dynamic and efectve in providing opportunites for learning and social engagement across our membership. I look forward with antcipaton to being part of our dynamicand vibrant U3A Melbourne City in 2019.

Changes to Policies. There are some changes to Policies which may afect some members during 2019. The Commitee has worked hard to improve the fairness of access to those classes with waitng lists and to accommodate a growing membership. Please refer to the U3A website to review the most recent version of our policies, partcularly Foreign Language, Volunteer and Extended Planned Absence Policies. These changes make our operaton more efectve and equitable for all members.

Spotlight on our volunteers Diana Andrews and Jean Fahey

Diana Andrews, on the lef, and her right hand woman Jean Fahey are the baristas of U3A Melbourne City. Both joined about the same tme, ten years ago : Diana afer her partner died and Jean afer emigratng from England. Both served on the Events Commitee and the frst ever Let's Do Lunch was at Diana's son's vegetarian restaurant, Munster Haus, in North Fitzroy. Both have been lifeelong volunteers as well as having families and careers : Diana as a kindergarten teacher and Jean as a registrar. At 83 Diana is stll organising the cofee for Current Afairs on Thursday mornings at the Multcultural Hub. During Diana’s two knee and one hip replacement operatons Jean took over and now they work as a team making sure that the seventyefve members of the group have cafeine at hand to help them cope with understanding and arguing about the news.

U3A would like to thank Anne Cobham who has organised the Let's Do Theatre group for a couple of years now. All flms are subttled, synopses are available and the features during the interval provide a greater insight into each opera.

Each screening runs for at least three hours, some longer, depending on the length of the opera and the number of intervals. It’s like atending a real performance, captured in highedefniton and hosted by a principal.

Members will meet in the theatre foyer or in the popeup park in front of the theatre at 10.15am for a 10.30am start. Afer each screening members are invited to join together for tea/cofee and/or a light meal at a local café.

MOVIES: Conveners Fiona Graham-Murray & Jan Norman. Let’s Do Movies (LDM) is now well into its meetngs for 2018. We have seen an eclectc mix of Palace Como oferings during 2018.

A group of 10e20 of us have setled into fareranging and ofen contnuing discussions over lunch at Splash in the Como centreafer the movie each week. We have empathised with and/or been surprised by the emotonal journeys of onescreen characters, the whateifs and whys, the extraordinary impact that backdrop, costume, locaton and music have had on the way we have experienced the story, and explored possible other outcomes or “hidden” meanings in the scripts and directon.

I think some of us “older” LDM people stll Miss Mimi’s inclusive and friendly personality around the place on a Tuesday, but Jan Norman and I have been warmly supported in our new roles as LDM’s coordinators and we have welcomed new members. We are happy to report that the current group of Tuesday movieegoers are just lovely to be with to hear their movie reviews.

WALKS: Convener Margaret Wyat. Meets Tuesdays outside "Taxi/Transport " restaurant, Fed. Square @ 10:00am.

We walk for approximately 1 hour to inner urban destnatons, then enjoy wonderful cofee and spirited exchange of ideas and thoughts. Afer this fun we walk back to the city, a total outng of about 5 to 7 kms walking. Our walks cover the most varied and interestng paths and every week is an adventure. We have from 30 to 35 partcipants each week. A medium level of ftness is required. Remember to bring a drink, sunscreen, your Myki card, a hat and wear comfortable walking shoes.

For those that are new to U3A Melbourne City and are interested in joining the walking group, please tck the Let’s Do Walks box on MyU3A to receive more details.

LIKE TO HELP OUT?Due to the popularity of the Tuesday group we are looeing for a second leader to run a new group on another weee day.

CYCLING: Conveners Lori Draee & Richard Lasee. This group, run by two experienced and ft cyclists, meets at Federaton Square 9.30 on Thursday mornings and rides for approximately 30 e 40km returning to the city by lunchtme afer a cofee break midway. A reasonable level of ftness is required as there may be 1 or 2 hills but we remain on bike paths wherever possible.

Our Let’s Do Cycling group is well underway with rides to Abbotsford, Essendon and Williamstown so far this month. Luckily the weather each Thursday has been perfect and we have enjoyed the rides, the company and the chats over cofee. We have a waitng list to join the cycling group but may be able to start up a second cycling group in the near future.
