High Importance

Dear Parent/Carer

Administration of Medicines.

In response to East Sussex County Council guidelines, this school has a policy regarding the

Administration of Medicines. This policy can be viewed on the school website

www.willingdonschool.org.uk. Parent/Carers are reminded that there is no requirement for school

staff to undertake this responsibility and staff who do so are acting in a voluntary capacity. You are

kindly requested to assist the school by co-operating with the school policy.

Our aim is to encourage the independence of our students and support those students who require

medication during school hours.

The school will not however, undertake invasive procedures, including the giving of injections. An

emergency response procedure will be agreed with parents where necessary, i.e. the use of epi-pens.

The school will not administer medication e.g. antibiotics if 3 times or less a day. Where possible,

drug regimes should be arranged so that doses are not required to be given to students during the

school day.

The school will administer medication where it is not possible to rearrange drug regimes i.e.

antibiotics that require 4 doses a day. Parents/Carers are required to provide the smallest practicable

dose, in the original container (label to give details of medication, dose, and child’s name). If

you wish to keep the original box/container it will require asking the doctor/pharmacist for two

boxes/containers to be made up.

The school will administer regular/long term medication to students whose medical condition, if not

managed, could limit access to education. Contact with parents/carers will be required to complete

the necessary forms and possibly an individual Health Care Plan.

The guidelines from East Sussex County Council, also stipulate that schools can no longer administer

Asprin based drugs, unless they have been prescribed by a Doctor or Medical Practitioner. Again

these must be in the original container with the pharmacy label on the container, clearly specifying the

dose details.

All medicines in the form of tablets and capsules MUST be taken with a drink of water which will be

provided for your child. If your child refuses to comply with this request, the medication cannot be

Page 3: Mailshot 2012

administered OR we will ask you as the parent/carer to come into school to sign a disclaimer as

tablets/capsules can become lodged in the throat potentially causing damage to the health of the child.

NO medicines can be administered unless the statutory forms are completed. This is a legal

requirement. Notes or telephone calls on the day can no longer be accepted as an agreement to

administer medication. Forms can be collected from Student Support Office which is open each

school day from 8.00am. Parent/Carers will also be requested to collect all outstanding medicines at

the end of the academic year as our medical cabinets now have to be cleared completely by the end of

each Summer Term. It is the Parent/Carers responsibility to dispose of any unused medication that is

held at school. Should your child require medication at school during the following academic year

you will then need to contact the Student Support Office to arrange for new forms to be completed for

that academic year.

I hope the above information has been useful and it is our policy that we continue to enable the

administration of medicines in school. However I do need to emphasise that our school staff are

acting in a voluntary capacity, and that you as parents/carers retain the legal responsibility for

administering medicines in respect of your child, at all times.

Yours sincerely

Andy Webb

Business Manager

Dear Parent

Relateen Counselling Service

Relateen, provided by Relate (the national relationship counselling organisation) is a dedicated

independent counselling service for 10-18 year olds, currently offering support to Willingdon

students one day per week.

Relateen offers an opportunity for young people to talk openly and honestly about what is worrying

them. They are able to express themselves to someone without fear of reaction, gain an insight into

how emotions affect their behaviour and can begin to learn the skills necessary to deal with events

in the future as adults.

Relateen offers all clients confidentiality (with the exception of Child Protection issues). All

counsellors have enhanced level CRB checks and have undergone special training on working with

children and young people.

Parental consent for Relateen service will be assumed, unless you return the tear-off slip below.

Yours Sincerely

Sue Dixon

September 2012 Dear Parent/Carer

School Fund

At the beginning of a new academic year we write to invite you to make a contribution to the School Fund. This fund is outside the remit of County Hall and is controlled by the school. It is used to finance all whole school student centred activities, to improve the school environment and to provide additional activities to supplement the curriculum. To demonstrate the benefits that the fund can make to the school, the fund has in recent years, contributed towards the cost of the refurbishment of the girls’ toilet facilities, helped in raising funds towards the cost of a new school minibus, as well as subsidising off site curricular activities and supporting other extended services that the school offers. One development that school fund contributions are currently being targeted at, are awards and prizes for student achievement, for all year groups, awards for which are held at the end of the Autumn, Spring and Summer Terms. If you are able to contribute, we suggest a contribution of £10 per family. Money can be paid directly to the school, with cheques payable to “Willingdon School Fund”. Thank you in anticipation and for your continued support. Yours sincerely, A Webb Business Manager .............................................................................................................................................. Better health, better care, closer to home

THE COMMUNITY SCHOOL NURSING SERVICE Now that your child is transferring to Secondary school, we would like to tell you about the service offered by the Community School Nursing Service. Year 7 During Year 7, your child will be introduced to the Healthy Child Programme 11-19 years. He/She will be offered a health care interview. Both you and your child may receive a questionnaire from the School Nurse Service about your child’s health and well being. Based on both of your responses we may then see your child for a face to face health care review. It will include a discussion about all aspects of your child’s health. We will follow up with you only when necessary. Year 7-11 School Nurses work very closely with the PHSE team in the school, working within the classroom delivering health messages through the PHSE curriculum such as stop smoking, self-esteem and bullying, relationships and sexual health. Year 8 During Year 8, we will be offering the HPV vaccine to female students. We will give you more information about this once your child has started at secondary school. We work closely with the staff at school and sometimes may need to share information about your child in order to provide the best possible support. We also work closely with agencies that work within the school. All schools have a ‘drop-in’ service offered by their named School Nurse for students, parents and staff. Your child can come and see us at any time to discuss any concerns he/she may have. It is a confidential 1:1 where they can access appropriate information and support. Generally, we do not expect to contact you after a ‘drop-in’ session; however, there will be times when we do. Some students may need to have School Nurse input such as educational needs, child protection or ongoing health concerns needing review and you will normally be involved with these. We can offer home visiting to support you both and your child. If you would like to know more about what the Community School Nurse Service offers within the Healthy Child Programme 11-19 years, please contact her on the number above.

Dear Parent/Carer,

Design & Technology Department

For many years parents have contributed towards the costs of materials in Design & Technology.

This has enabled us to deliver a wide variety of projects and ensure that students are able to

design and make products of a good quality using the best possible materials. We believe this

helps our students to value their work and in our experience, parents wish to retain the products

that their children design and make. At the end of the Summer term, many of you will have

visited our ‘INSPIRED’ exhibition - a celebration of our students’ successful D&T Lighting outcomes

from our Product Design GCSE course.

We have estimated that the basic cost of materials and components this year will remain the

same.

KS3 Students £5 per year or £15 for the whole of KS3

KS4 students £10 at start of KS4

Ingredients for Food Skills and Food & Nutrition are arranged separately.

If you have already contributed for the coming year/s, thank you.

If you wish to retain your child’s Design & Technology work, please complete the reply slip below

and enclose your voluntary contribution towards the cost.

Thank you for your help and support.

Yours sincerely,

Miss A. S. Bolton

Director of Learning for Design & Technology

Dealing with frustration and

anger

Talk about different ways of

calming down e.g. counting to 10,

breathing deeply, listening to

music. take time out to think

(this can be practised).

If you find yourself in an argu-

ment with a young person - use

the same methods to calm down,

– deep breathing – step back –

think. One idea to solve a prob-

lem may not work immediately be

open to other ideas.

ties for parents, carers and oth-

Parents know their children best and contribute

to the development of these skills throughout

their lives. Other adults are important role

models for these young people. In schools social

and emotional skills are taught throughout the

curriculum and through opportunities that take

place beyond the classroom.

How we can help all young people

Communicating

Find a time to talk

Give the young person your attention

Don’t always expect an answer you want

to hear

Don’t belittle concerns

You don’t need to solve the problem, lis-

tening can be enough.

Try not to interrupt

Equally encourage the young person to

take time and listen to others when life

seems confusing.

Providing and Sharing experiences

Encourage participation in activities

Plan and do things together

Parents and Schools work together for

young people to be happy, confident and

successful in life

We recognise that academic success is

linked to physical and emotional

development, well being and self esteem.

Social and emotional skills are essential to

success in all aspects of life.

Skills such as:

Managing change

Dealing with anger and frustration

Developing good relationships with

other young people and adults

Making good choices

Resolving conflicts

Understanding self

Identifying appropriate goals and

maintaining motivation

If you are living or working with a young

person in secondary school the next few

years will be an exciting and occasionally

bumpy ride. Through this time the young

person will grow and develop into the adult

they will one day become. We need to work

together to help young people understand

emotions and know how to use them

constructively.

Helping Young People be Happy

and Healthy throughout

Secondary school

Find time to share experiences.

Encourage participation in activities

to widen interests and social groups.

Giving praise and Celebrating success

Praise makes us all feel good and boosts

our self esteem – give 4 positives to every

negative – catch them being good!

Managing and keeping rules

Boundaries are important for young people

to feel safe – agree and set rules, be

realistic and consistent with sanctions.

Motivating

We all need to have dreams and be

Motivated, to have a plan that is broken

down to small achievable targets. We have

to stick to the plan, even when things get

tough.

Adults need to help young people to take

responsibility for their dreams. Let

children choose their own goals – they are

likely to stick at something they really

want to do. Talk to them about making

their goals realistic!

Dealing with frustration and anger

There are a lot of different pressures on

young people today and it is important not

to ignore or overreact to young peoples’

frustration and anger.

Help your child to know the first signs of

anger in themselves before they lose

control.
