W GENERAL NOTESThe safety features of installing devices and controls have become more and more important. The use of transformers to

provide protective electric separation and extra-low voltage safety is a simple way of increasing the safety characteristics of

a device or control. Transformers are isolating and safety transformers in one. Safety- or isolating transformers with

enhanced or double insulation.

They have been constructed and tested according to EN 61558. Isolating transformers are used when a high degree of

protection is required between input and output winding. The maximum output voltage of isolating transformers is 1000 V

AC.

Safety transformers are isolating transformers with an output voltage of ≤ 50 V AC. They are predominantly used in

systems with extra low-voltage safety (SELV).

These transformers are also control transformers used to supply control circuits. They have been built and tested in

accordance with EN 61558. EN 60 204 prescribes the use of a transformer in only two exceptional instances involving

control circuits. The control transformers meet all requirements set out in this directive.

Terms

• Rated values

Rated values are rated voltage, rated currents (rms values), rated power output, rated frequency and rated transfor-

mation ratio, with which transformers are labelled and for which they have been measured and established.

• Rated input voltage

The rated input voltage is the supply voltage of a transformer under pre-defined operating conditions.

• Rated output voltage

The rated output voltage is the voltage at the output end of a transformer with a rated input voltage, rated

frequency, rated output current and rated power factor.

• No-load voltage

The no-load voltage is the output voltage of an unloaded transformer at the rated frequency.

• No-load current

The no-load current is the current at the input end of an unloaded transformer at the rated input voltage and rated

frequency.

• Rated power

The rated power is the power at the output side of the transformer. It is the product of the rated output voltage and

rated output current. If the transformer has additional secondary taps, the rated power is the sum of the products of

rated output voltage and rated output current of all loadable control circuits at the same time.

• Stand-by power

The stand-by power is the power on the output end of a control transformer when the p.f. = 0,5 and given a maxi-

mum voltage drop of 5% compared with the rated output voltage.

• Short-circuit voltage

The short-circuit voltage is the voltage which must be produced in the input winding in order that the rated output

current still flows even with a short-circuit on the secondary side (windings at room temperature). It is expressed as a

% of the rated input voltage.

• No-load losses = core losses

The active input with a rated input voltage on the input winding at the rated frequency and the output winding is

unloaded.

• Short-curcuit losses = copper losses

The active input when there is a short-circuit across the secondary side at rated output current.

Quality

• Core

Dynamo sheets or cold-rolled grain-oriented electric plates are used to form the core.

• Windings

Both the input and output windings are made from enamel-insulated copper wire. To ensure optimal heat transfer

and resistance to moisture, the windings are soaked in resin in a vacuum before being oven-baked.

• Insulation class

The transformers are designed according to insulation class B. This means a maximum continuous temperature of

130° C. According to IEC 85 und IEC 216, other standard insulation classes are: A (105° C), E (120° C) and

F (155° C).

• Degree of protection:

The transformers have the degree of protection IP00 as standard. Accessories can be used to increase this degree of

protection to IP 23 or IP 65.

W THE NEW EUROPEAN TRANSFORMER STANDARD EN61558:The standard EN61558 is the first European standard to cover all types of transformers.

This standard is the basic part and describes the underlying requirements for transformers, supply currents, etc..

This standard replaces: VDE0550 part 1-6

This standard is for small transformers for general application.

It applies to: Single-phase transformers up to 1 kVA

Three-phase transformers up to 5 kVA

This standard replaces: VDE0550

Part EN61558-2-2

This standard applies to control transformers and applies to all newly developed transformers.

All transformers produced after 31/12/2001 must meet this standard.

Part EN61558-2-4

This standard is for isolating transformers (Usec > 50 V and < 1000 V).

It applies to: Single-phase transformers up to 25 kVA

Three-phase transformers up to 40 kVA

Part EN61558-2-6

This standard is for safety transformers (Usec < 50 V)

It applies to: Single-phase transformers up to 25 kVA

Three-phase transformers up to 40 kVA

This part is binding for all newly-developed transformers.

The entire range of Schrack safety and isolating transformers have been produced to this standard since 1/7/2001.

The ÖVE mark has been replaced by the ENEC mark.
