ATMO Japan 2019: Mayekawa announces new 'CO2 Ice Bank' systemBy Devin Yoshimoto, Feb 25, 2019

Leading Japanese system manufacturer Mayekawa has developed, in collaboration with Baltimore Aircoil Company (BAC) Japan, a new NH3/CO2-powered thermal ice storage system, heard participants at the ATMOsphere Japan conference on natural refrigerants, held on 12 February 2019 in Tokyo.

The system, dubbed the 'CO2 Ice Bank', combines Mayekawa's NH3/CO2 packaged chillers with BAC Japan's ice thermal storage tanks to provide chilled water for various industrial and commercial refrigeration and air-conditioning applications such as dairy and beverage plants or food and meat processing facilities.

"We, at Mayekawa, have advanced CO2 technology and know-how and BAC has great expertise in ice bank technology," said Mayekawa representative Hidehiro Kitayama.

"By combining the technology and know-how, we have successfully developed this CO2 ice bank."The system is the latest addition to Mayekawa's wide portfolio of natural refrigerant-based solutions which include the NewTon NH3/CO2 system, the Unimo CO2 heat pump, and several others.

"We have a wide product line-up and this is an example of a new application of CO2 equipment," said Kitayama.

"We would like to continue working with specialized partners in order to further develop this application."

Asked when the company would likely see its first installation, possibly in an air-conditioning application, Kitayama replied, "as of today, we haven't received any orders yet".

How to Keep Cool Without Air ConBy Temasek, Dec 04, 2018

When Assistant Professor Tan Swee Ching stepped foot on home soil after living in the United States and Britain for seven years, he was given an unceremonious slap in the face by an old foe: Singapore’s humidity.

This was quickly followed by heat, sweat and the familiar stickiness that spread across his body. While temperatures often soared above 30 deg C during summertime overseas, it never felt as hot as it is in Singapore, and he puts it down to the relative humidity of the air.Relative humidity affects how we perceive temperature, the National University of Singapore (NUS) Assistant Professor explained. “When the air is humid, the water on your body is not able to evaporate, and instead traps heat on your skin.”

At a relative humidity of 80 per cent – a usual level in Singapore – 32 deg C would feel like a scorching 45 deg C. “Hence, if we can reduce the amount of water vapour in the air, we will also be able to lower the temperature we perceive,” he added.

So he went on a mission to create a material that can do just that three years ago. He has come up with a potential gem – a hydrogel that is able to absorb up to four times its weight in water.

The creation of the ideal hydrogel has been arduous. Prof Tan has lost count of the number of versions of hydrogel he went through before coming up with the final product. Earlier versions could only absorb 20 per cent of its weight, about as efficient as commercial dehumidifiers. This left him discouraged and led him to drop the project for about a year. He revived it in late 2016 when a sudden brainwave prompted him to experiment with zinc oxide – a compound commonly found in skincare products like sunscreen.

“What we have now is a solution that does not require a single watt of electricity, which is cheaper and more environmentally-friendly than using air conditioning,” he explained.

Air conditioning accounts for more than 40 per cent of the energy used in most buildings. They also contain harmful chemical refrigerants such as chlorofluorocarbons and halogenated chlorofluorocarbons, which are common greenhouse gases that trap heat and lead to depletion of the ozone layer.

Tests showed that the hydrogel he developed is able to reduce the relative humidity of an enclosed space by 20 per cent in just seven minutes. This reduces the perceived temperature by seven to nine deg C.“While it will not be able to cool a room as well as an air con, it will make you feel far less sticky, which will greatly improve the comfort level,” he said.

A typical HDB bedroom, with its windows open, will need a sheet of hydrogel large enough to cover at least one wall to have that effect.

To ensure that the hydrogel will not have to be replaced, Prof Tan has developed another material with the ability to digest water.

“By coating this water-digesting material behind the hydrogel, the hydrogel will technically be able to keep absorbing water vapor from the air indefinitely,” he said.

How to Keep Cool Without Air Con - Continued

The hydrogel coating, which was developed over 18 months, will be piloted at an indoor location in the first half of next year, with the support of Temasek Foundation Ecosperity. The pilot will last four to five months, and the location will likely be a dormitory room, an office, or a public space. Following that, Prof Tan, who is from NUS’ Department of material science and engineering, plans to trial the hydrogel coating at a shaded outdoor location, such as a bus stop or sheltered walkway.

“As our population increases, so will demand for air conditioning. We need to find a less energy-intensive and greener way to keep ourselves cool, he said.

“We might just have found it.”

Example of the New Coating Technology

Innovative project tests the boundaries of HVAC demand response systemsBy Editors of Electric Light & Power/ POWERGRID International Feb 15, 2019

Austin-based Pecan Street announced this week that it will conduct the field testing and data management for a $2.9 million University of Michigan study that will tackle two of the electricity industry’s biggest challenges – management of renewables intermittency and management of heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) load growth – the latter of which is projected to be one of the top drivers of global electricity demand and carbon emissions over the next few decades.

The team plans to monitor the distribution system (low voltage lines and equipment) while evaluating how aggressively they can control the HVAC loads to help balance supply and demand. In addition, researchers will look at the tradeoff between good communications, which allows for better control of the loads but is more expensive, and less communications, which allows for less accurate load control but is more cost-effective. The three-year project includes a simulation phase (year one), an experimentation phase (year two), and a field-testing phase (year three).

The field-testing phase will be conducted in Austin with 100 volunteer homes that participate in Pecan Street’s energy research.

Funding for the project is provided by the Advanced Research Projects Agency-Energy (ARPA-E) at the U.S. Department of Energy and is one of 40 2018 ARPA-E projects, totaling $98 million.

“Heating and cooling homes and businesses consumes a significant portion of our total electricity, and that demand is growing,” said Pecan Street CEO Suzanne Russo. “Making these systems smarter, more responsive, and more compatible with renewable electricity will be key in reducing overall greenhouse gas emissions.”

The third phase of the ARPA-E study will be conducted within Pecan Street’s volunteer research network of connected homes in Austin, TX.

According to the International Energy Agency, air conditioners and electric cooling fans account for nearly 20 percent of the electricity used in the world’s buildings and is “one of the most critical blind spots in today’s energy debate.”

The project will be led by Assistant Professor Johanna Mathieu at the University of Michigan and will examine demand response algorithms for residential heating and cooling systems.

“We have the potential to provide a low-cost, easily implementable approach to improving grid reliability, public health and the environment,” Dr. Mathieu said. “And it’ll be good for the economy long-term, because it should eventually reduce the overall cost of energy.”
