MarathonPromo:A PlotAfoot

It's no secret that, a fewyears ago, the Boston Mara-thon was dogging it-breathing hard on Heart-break Hill. The quality ofthe field was down, and, in1985, for the first time ever, the city had empty hotelrooms during a Patriot's Dayweekend.

As the story goes, the'" city's financial fathers3 stepped in to gently convince8 the Boston Athletic Associ-~ ation that the marathon

couldn't be allowed to limpalong any longer. It neededto be upgraded. The com-merce of the city, they said, would be the beneficiary.

At the time, there was de-bate. Some purists objected.Commercializing the mara-thon wouldn't mean a boonto the city or anyone else, they argued. It would justmean a commercializedmarathon. .

Nonetheless, in rode JohnHancock Mutual Life Insur-ance, the event's first corpo-rate sponsor, with a $10 mil-lion, lO-year contract to

And from those whoare interested in hotelrooms being filled-theGreater Boston Con-vention and Visitors Bu-reau-comes that sof-test of all soft figures, that figure of flimsy ac-countancy and promo-tional punch: moneyspent in Boston on Pa-triot's Day weekend.

In 1985, the year so manypleaded to make the mara-thon a big budget event, theweekend spending figurewas figured to be $2.5million.

For this last marathon, thebureau happily reports thatpeople spent $60 million inBoston on Patriot's Dayweekend.

That's a 2500 percentincrease!

And, somehow, with allthat money being spent, nu-merous observers note therewere still hotel rooms empty.

replenish the event. So, now, three marathons

later, where does the moneygo?

According to company of-ficials, in 1988, the moneywas spread among essentials(see chart).

With other miscellaneouscosts, the total expenditureby Hancock is just morethan $1 million.

Is it money well spent? The mandatory answer fromHancock and race officials is(as it must be) an emphatic,"Yes, a thousand times, yes."

Now they just need to findthe supporting numbers.

Hancock reckons that a $1million or so investment getsthem $8 million in print ex-posure. Company communi-cations director Jack Ma-honey, calling it a "tremencdous return," says the figureis reckoned thusly:

First, you take a year tocollect all the press clip-pings, everywhere, about themarathon that mention thename John Hancock. That'sabout a four-foot pile. Thengo through them one by

By Chris Stanley

Fall is when all the shoe companiesquietly introduce their new shoes forspring, and (as can be expected) thereis a lot of new and exciting stuff head-ing our way. Even with the ever pre-sent price increases, I think that youwil~ find the 1989 shoes to be bettervalues than the shoes that are on theshelves now. While I can not go overeverything that will be new, I will re-view a few companies very quickly.

Saucony has changed most of theirshoes for '89. The Azura, which isselling well for a lightweight trainer,is now being offered in a new color.Building on the success of the Azura,Saucony has made a new shoe called theArrow, which is basically a more train-ing orientated version of the Azura. In 1989 you will find.the Jazz beingreborn, d/b/a the Jazz 2000 (this shoebeing a cross between the old Jazz andthe old Shadow, two shoes that had greatpopularity).

Avia is trying to make a strong pushinto the running field (again). Theywill introduce 10 all new styles (5 men,5 women), and this new line is obviouslywell thought out (and they have "theright stuff" to be winners), but Iwonder how many stores will carry thisline. The top two models in this Avia

1ine~i,ll",{1av'%tl}~neif~ £\~~~,s 1;,5J:;i~m,-"({i~;"'", ~ ~--Hytrel cushioning devise 'inbedded-in themidsole). Models that should be found inMaine are the ARC 2090 (the 2nd from thetop of the line that will more or lessreplace the 975), the 2050 (a ruggedstability shoe that replaces the 925),and the 2010 (replacing the 910). The2010 should prove to be a great value,as it has a 2D CMEVA midsole, a Gore lace-ing system, a good external counter, adurable carbonized outsole, and a $49.99price tag (hopef~lly).

Asics-Tiger is offering nothing allthat new, though I was excited to hearthat the Epirus is reborn (in the formof the Gel Epirus). This shoe will havethe same construction as the old versionbut with a gel pad both in the forfootand heel.

Finally, I'll fill you in about NewBalance. The 1500 is here after almosta year of pre-hype. Also new is the 595(in both m & w models), which is'basical-ly a more stable and durable update ofthe old 570. Two shoes that should proveto be strong sellers for New Balanceare the 676 and the 495 (both availablein m & w versions). The 676 replacesthe 675 (with a better midsole package),and the495 replaces the 476. New Bal-~nce has a very impressive diversity ofshoes this year, with a total of 16 run-ning shoes being offered. Every possibletype of runner can be outfitted by thiscompany, es~ecially considering all thewidths that they make and the different

shapes and styles of running shoes thatthey offer. The big task will be infinding the style and width that youneed in Maine.

Let me wrap this up by saying thebest way to by your running shoes is byshopping around. Feel free to ask quest-ions, to try on styles that you nevertried on before, to understand what typesof shoes best fit your needs. It isbecause that consumers are so informedand knowledgable that footwear companiesare putting more of a "punch" into theirshoes then ever before.
