The summer regatta season is in full gear for the X boats and soon the C's and MC's will fol- low. Congratulations to all the Beu- lah sailors who participated at the TRAP and to John Barr and John Berg sailing the B-6 for winning Quads! The Beulah Beasts, a.k.a. the volleyball team, also crushed the competition at Quads. Well done! As summer rolls along please re- member to be cognizant of your social and on the water responsi- bilities. If for any reason you cannot fulfill your obligation, it is your re- sponsibility to find an able bodied person to substitute for you. This long standing policy has worked well in the past - let's make it work going forward. The 4th of July breakfast and games were highlights of the past few weeks - how wonderful to see the likes of Jill Atkinson, Glen Tacke, Megan Grubis, the Heck- mann boys and Greg Gerloff to name a few. Hopefully everyone was able to take in the fireworks display off Buck Island. The team of Jim Kutschenreuter, Dale Roble, Joe Kutsch, Chris Kubicek, Bran- don Bortoli, Greg Gerloff, Ron Ja- recki and Kent Haeger once again did an outstanding job. With your generous support, the celebration continues! Trivia night hosted by LBSS was again a battle of the brains. It was hard fought for first prize, but in the end the win- ning team (see photo in Mainsheet - and David Porter was NOT of the winning team!) eked out a victory. Dear LBYC Membership, It’s a rare summer indeed as the surface water tempera-ture reached 90 degrees in the south east bay and long lake along Country Club Lane by the 5th of July. Ask the oldest Lake Beulah Member you know to verify if this has occurred previously. If this sound too bossy, just get out and swim in the “bath water”. Please fulfill your volunteer duties as a PRO, on the Safety Boat team and on the Gun boat. Find a substitute for your duties should the 90 degrees water beckon you play hard early over at Lake Lovers. My sailing tips (one is a bonus) for this issue: Steal the get away puff by constantly looking for the “new” wind.

Shift gears and ease your sails in this mid-summer “heat wave” weather pattern we are experiencing. I want to ask you to please return your traveling trophies to the Sailing School office at the LBYC. They should be clean and polished. Lastly, plan your off lake regatta now. It pays big in boat handling skills on and off the water. See you on the water,

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE LBYC

Whew! What a month! We take a few breaths on the weekend and enjoy the marvelous Wednesday Night Cookouts. As we progress through July, the crowds just get lar-ger. And not to be partial, but we have a Smyczek Wednesday Night coming up ---- and that means more food than you will ever see again. Can it be they know about quantity planning? You all know this is a volunteer club. We need your participation on so many levels to keep this club’s per-formance at its finest. If you have not fulfilled your commitment socially or on the water, please consider step-ping up the last half of the season. We do expect both partners in a family membership to participate. We simply need you and, guess what? It’s really fun to work beside your fellow mem-bers. We have been trying to give our senior-most members the respect they deserve so, all you young’uns, be sure to step up to the Beulah standard. There simply are not better friendships than on Beulah which have developed because we work and play together. Thank you to the X parents who have scheduled impromptu youth nights to utilize the overages at other events. They manage to turn our extra food

into revenue and a fun night besides. ---- just to show you the bond of our X parents, Julie Haeger’s sister, Dee, (mother of Gabe) told me she didn’t know how to thank all the wonderful new friends she met, for including her and Gabe in this great family. Only here for a short 10 days, she felt a connection to all of us who have enjoyed watching Gabe become a most accomplished crew and a great friend to the Beulah boys. And, rumor has it, Gabe REALLY wants an X boat next year. Well, Uncle Kent? We have a rental at the club during X Inland. The MC fleet will prepare at the end of the month for MC festivi-ties. More to come next issue and via emails. One of our Nescos died a good death. If anyone has an extra, retired unit, we would love the donation, same with silverware. Think of us as you down-size. The LBSS Trivia Night resulted in prizes for a smart, select 16. For those of us who did NOT win, we learned:

You better watch TV You best love music

The young kids know all about rap and modern times. ---- the smart teams had a range of ages. Will Haeger won the prize for the fastest report time on a question. Quite Janky!! To be honest, I don’t know what “janky” means but it is a clever word which bespeaks youthfulness.

So now the social report forms will have the names of the eight winners who receive free dinners for the re-mainder of the season including the Trophy Dinner. The bar will have the list of the eight folks who chose drinks as their prize – two each night. Thank you to all of you for a great start to the year. I can’t think of a place I would rather be. This summer concludes my four year term as Social Chair and Don Franzene looks for-ward to my more moderate attitude on drinking. He feels the job has tainted my tolerance to booze. Until then, drink up! (Responsibly, of course). Enjoy our wide beer and wine selec-tion.

See you at the club. See you at the club. See you at the club. See you at the club.

It’s Luffable-They ate it. On a fishing trip up north, Glen Krein-brink and Doug Dorn were cooking angel hair pasta. When they phoned Mitzi she said to use 1/2 box. Doug grabbed a handful and on the way to the pot, the middle dropped out of the bunch like pick up sticks. Down on their knees forever they threw the pasta in the pot and ate it. The clean pasta? It was still in the box!

The 2012 Area K Eliminations for the U.S. Double-Handed Junior Sailing Championships were hosted by the Wayzata Community Sailing Center in Wayzata, Minnesota from July 1 to 3. Twenty six (26) competitors trav-eled from the states of Illinois, Minne-sota, and Wisconsin to compete for one of two positions @ the Bemis Fi-nals. Eligibility was restricted to com-petitors who had reached their 13th birthday, but not their 19th birthday during the calendar year. On day 1, winds ranged from 5 to 12 mph, not enough for most of the teams to use the trapeze, but strong enough to use the hiking straps. The sailors competed in Club 420s with trapeze and spinnakers. Beulah's Mary Claire Kiernan competed with crew Maddie Loosbrock of Minne-tonka YC. The ladies started slowly with an 11th in race #1, but got things in gear with a second place finish in Race #2. Key to their strong finish was an opportunity to use the tra-

peze. They closed the day with consistently stronger finishes of 5th, 4th, and 2nd. This placed them in third place overall at the end of the first day with 24

points. Minnetonka's Ben Garber and LaBelle's Parker Trepton were first and second with 19 and 22 points, respectively. Other familiar sailors competing in the event include Will Crary 5th, Jack Bitney 6th, Addy Fer-guson 9th, Trevor Trepton 18th, and Dan Groskopf 22nd. While nine (9) races were scheduled, light winds only enabled six races to be completed. By finishing the sixth race, each team discarded their worst finish. In the end, there was little change from the previous day's stand-ings. Representing Area K at the fi-

nals will be Ben Garber of Minnetonka and Parker Trepton of LaBelle. Beu-lah's representative, Kiernan, fin-ished third overall. Go to the article on the LBSS website"LBSSonline.org" for the link to the final standings. Next up for Kiernan will be the US SAILING Jr Women's Singlehanded Championship for the Leiter Cup. The event will be competed in Laser Radi-als and hosted by Chicago Yacht Club's Belmont Station from July 6 to 12. Past winners of this Champion-ship include Beulah's Steph Roble.

The X regatta season is now in full swing! by Joe Sko

Our troops hoofed it off to TRAP a couple weeks ago to get tuned up for the gauntlet. In honor of regatta sea-son, Woody Bach's famous lament, as memorialized in cross-stitch from

1974, is back in view in the bar at the club. Look for his words, “There is no hell, just one long regatta.” Last week

it was back to Pine for the Quad Lakes regatta. There wasn't much in the way of breeze to be had ei-ther day so there were bonus points on the water for being not as large. Monday the judges squeezed off two races and the “not-large-yet-dudes” John Barr and Patrick Schmidt were 1-2 in the clubhouse. Tuesday morning dawned hot and flat so the fellas were on edge, wondering if there would be racing and if their places would hold up. The breeze came in mid-morning and out the fleet went. Alas, as they were sailing out it was into a dying breeze, and by the time the boats made it to the course the wind had turned all the way off so there was a bit of floating around and some swim-

ming and general good times, and the judges called it and everyone packed up and went to cheer on the 2012 Quad Lakes Champion, sailing B-6, John Barr and Crew John Berg!

This week it was down south to Ge-neva to the GLSS Regatta where a strong and deep fleet of 55 boats gath-ered. Things started slowly in light breezes Monday morning - Patrick Schmidt and Brooke Komas were in the top five early in the race and the 77 hung in there to finish in the top group. In for lunch as the breeze died, but a nice sea breeze filled in later to allow two good races in the afternoon. Vari-ous B boats had good showings with Charlie Kutsch and Annie Cate Schmidt getting second in both races to move into top position at the end of the day and Brooke Komas with brother Eric aboard showing some serious hiking power as they hung a 4 out in the last race. Two more races on Tuesday morning and Beulah ended up with three boats in the top 10 - Charlie/AC in 3rd, Michael Barr and Gabe DiBiase in 6th and George Kiernan and Ryan Komas in 8th. Representing well, you can be proud of our kids! Next week Oshkosh and then WYA on the weekend followed by the ILYA. Photos below: right, Charlie/Annie Cate, and left, at GLSS Regatta.

A Dow Family Tradition by Dick Dow Joan and Dick Dow’s family has been participating in the annual Racine Lighthouse Run for at least nine years. The 34th annual run was held on June 16th this year with over 3,000 partici-pants. The Dow family fielded 21 runners and walkers plus three, one-year old great grandchildren pushed in jogging prams by their parents. The family trophy went to Chris Kubicek who finished the 10-mile run

in a blazing 76 minutes. Chrissy Kubicek “the Zumba Queen” set a blistering pace to push Dick up the final long Main Street hill to the finish line. He placed 6th in the over 70 age category which was not a per-sonal best but adequate with sore knees. Joan hosted a brunch for all participants at the Blue Bay Restaurant A good time was had by all.
