Commodore’s Comments: The social season got off to a fun start with our Opening Party. It was a festive atmosphere where we all got to reconnect with old friends. (see Karen and I connecting) Thanks to all who helped make it a success. Wednesday night cookouts have been delicious so far and Youth Nights are underway also. We have a lot going on, don't forget to reserve for the Sock Hop by June 13th. I wonder if Fonzi will make an appearance? The sailing season is also well under- way. C-sailors travel to Brown's lake this weekend to tune up for Nationals at Culver Indiana the following week- end. Sailing school is in the intense mode trying to get our young sailors ready to go before their long regatta season kicks in. There is much going on at our club each day. It is great to see the kids having so much fun while learning a great lifetime sport! LEASE UPDATE As I mentioned at the opening party, I said I would fill you in on the details of our new lease with the Lake Beulah Sailing School. Negotiations started last summer, with LBYC being represented by John Becker, Chairman, Hardy Will, Jeff Lip- pert and myself. Attorney, Daniel Bach will be representing us to draft the lease. The goals of the committee with direc- tion from the Board were to; 1. Draft a lease consistent with most of the terms of the prior lease as it was a well-crafted document. 2. Establish a rent factor that is fair to both parties. 3. Use the lease as a tool to provide for the financial stability of the club. To that end we came up with the fol- lowing plan agreed to in principle by both parties. Main Points: Term: Ten years Payment: Onetime payment by LBSS of $85,000 to occur in 2011. Yearly payments by LBSS equal to 3/8 of the real estate tax The Board and committee like this ap- proach as it achieves our goals. $85,000 will be the approximate bal- ance of our mortgage at year end. We will use the onetime payment of $85,000 to pay off the mortgage. On- going payments equal to 3/8 of the real estate tax; this was the lease payment approach prior to 2001. The Board likes this as we then are debt free, giv- ing us greater flexibility as our building ages. FOR THE LAKE BEULAH SAIL- ING SCHOOL TO MAKE THEIR ONE- TIME PAYMENT, THEY WILL NEED THE SUPPORT OF THEIR FRIENDS. PLEASE CONSIDER THE BENEFIT TO OUR CLUB WHEN THEY ASK FOR YOUR SUPPORT! LBSS has been a great tenant, this approach allows them to go forward with a reduced rent factor so they also benefit. I am sure you will hear more from them also. This is the update. Your Board is ex- cited about having a Mortgage Burn- ing Party! It will be a great moment for our club. If you have any questions, please con- tact any committee member. Thank you for your support! FROM THE SAILING COMMODORE

With the first few weeks of racing behind us, I'd like to thank all the volunteers for their patience and assistance with our newly adopted Chase/PRO/Signal boat programs. The muddy waters on the "how it is going to work" have more definition. Thank you to Milt Haeger for running a clear and concise Chase/PRO/Signal boat meeting on Friday, June 3rd. (see photo) His judging exper-tise and on the water knowledge along with great questions from those in attendance helped the participants understand how the new Chase boat system should work. Some key points touched on at the meeting were: Flags on the Chase boat should include the End of Line, Gen-eral Recall, Individual Recall and Mark Change. These flags will be flown when appropriate from the Chase boat. There is a clear baggie on the Signal boat that is labeled "Judges." Please be sure to take that with you on the Chase boat. The PRO will determine if the Asst. PRO will be on the Signal

Boat during the start. The PRO will determine whether the Signal Boat will call the finish line. The Signal boat, when calling the starting line, will call over the ra-dio on channel 72 "I have nothing" if they determine no boats are over that they saw. The PRO will make the "All clear," "Individual Recall," or "General Recall" determination over the radio. Sailors, please help those who are over and may not have heard their number called. For those calling the line, please make note that a boat is finished when the any part of the sailboat (usually the bow) crosses between the buoy and the line flag. Also, with more than 15 C boats on the line, judges please allow for a long line! Signal boat teams, a big "thank you" for keeping the boat tidy. The Judge's side of the Signal boat isn't locking properly, so please put any-thing of value on the side that locks until further notice. Also, if you are scoring two fleets, please try to keep the score sheets separate when log-ging information onto them. The car-

bon tends to bleed through if they are stacked when writing, mak-ing it difficult for Carrie to score. A final note - you may want to con-sider registering your sailboat if you haven't already done so. The DNR has promised to make an appear-ance on Beulah this year! Good sailing this week. Thanks to

everyone for playing well with oth-

ers! Good luck to the C's going to

the MIR on Brown's Lake this coming

weekend. Julie HaegerJulie HaegerJulie HaegerJulie Haeger

Beulah’s All American Women Shine by Nancy Roble and Julie Haeger

Lake Beulah was well represented at the 2011 Collegiate Nationals held at on the Columbia River in Cascade Locks, Oregon. The nine day event was broken up into three separate championships: Women’s, Team Rac-ing, and Co-Ed. The Women’s event started the championships off with three days of

difficult racing. Representing Beulah were Christine Porter (Wisconsin), Stephanie Roble (Old Dominion), and Annie Haeger and Stephanie Hudson (Boston College). Rain, cold and less than desirable wind conditions made the event challenging. Stir in some current – brutal on the downwind runs – and it was wild! The wind came up for the final few races of the event al-lowing the girls to feel like the event gave them a bit of every condition. Old Dominion finished the event in 6th, Boston College in 11th, and Wisconsin

in 16th. At the Women’s ban-quet, held on the evening of the final day of racing, the ICSA All-American Women’s Skippers and the Women’s College Sailor of the Year were announced. The prestig-ious Women’s College Sailor of the Year award annually honors an indi-vidual who has per-

formed at the highest level of competi-tion in district and national champion-ships. Annie Haeger was named the 2011 Women’s College Sailor of the Year. In a touching speech, Annie thanked her dad for his undying sup-port and her mom for putting up with her dad! The All-America committee also evaluates collegiate sailors for the All-American Women’s Skippers based on their competitive record in District and North American Championships. They also analyze how the record compares to fellow competitors, the quality of the competition the record was achieved in, the span of the re-cord over the fall and spring seasons, results achieved with different crews and how the record compares to All-American winners in previous years. Out of a possible 15 this year’s com-mittee chose only 7. Two of those were our own Stephanie Roble and Annie Haeger, who were named 2011 All-American Women’s Skip-pers.

Stephanie Roble, Christine Porter, Annie Haeger

College Nationals Continued The next three days held an interesting

Team Race event. Sailing for Wisconsin

were Joe and George Kutschenreuter.

Annie Haeger sailed for Boston College.

Team racing is a round robin event, 3 on

3, with the final four teams reaching the

finals in the afternoon of the third day.

Fortunately, there was wind for this

event. Wisconsin sailed their best but

unfortunately lost to St. Mary’s of Mary-

land in what people viewing on shore

claimed to be one of the best team races

they’ve ever seen. The Wisconsin team

can be proud! Haeger helped BC sail

into a second place finish.

The last three days of the championships

featured the Co-Ed championship and

representing Beulah were Stephanie

Roble (Old Dominion) and Will Haeger

(Tufts). Both skippers sailed in the A

division. Again, conditions were light

with upwinds taking about five minutes

and the brutal downwinds against the

current taking up to ten minutes. Did we

mention that in the nine days out there it

was cold, wet, and miserable? Not hav-

ing the luxury of a facility, parents

braved the elements sitting on bleachers

and learning to shelter themselves any

way they could. Just ask Nancy Roble

about her “favorite” spot at the venue!

Hidden behind the shed, but with a view

of the race course, was one of her haunts.

The kids were again challenged by the

conditions but sailed their hearts out.

Old Dominion finished 15th and Tufts

17th. Boston College won the event.

This was Steph Roble’s last college

regatta. She finishes her college sailing

career as a two time All American.

Wednesday Nights – what a hit! The first cookout featured 86 diners. The team of Schmidt, Brown and Heckman started us off with pulled pork sandwiches, Ann Martin’s cole-slaw and Susan Brown’s homemade sundae toppings.

June 15th Cookout - Toni Majka is one of our most exceptional cooks. She will be joined by the Bitters and Tanis families. Thanks for always pro-viding us with good food. The Boiled Owls Cookout on June 22nd is a fundraiser where the profits go into a fund to maintain or repair our trophies. It will feature Penny Clay-ton’s homemade sloppy Joe’s and

desserts. June is rounded out with the June 29th Grubis/Jarecki/Krueger Cook-out. Great cooks, great food. Fourth of July will look a little differ-ent this year. The weekend starts with the C Party on Friday night. Watch your email for more info. Molly and Martin Barr, the Bricklers, Greesons and Bonifields along with Ben Porter will host a good time. Sunday night is Fireworks on the lake but stop by the club for a drink. Bring food if you like for a casual night at the club before you go out on the lake. Breakfast is on tap for Monday, July 4th. We flip a lot of cakes that morn-ing. Bring the family and enjoy the holiday. Friday nights at the club --- Kattack Friday – it’s real! C and MC sailors, come to the club Friday June 10 at 7 pm to have some fun critiquing the June 4 races. We’ll review the MC race and both C back-to-back races.

Get in-sights from the winners. C sail-ors – pull out your boat in time to join us and sharpen your thinking for the MIR. MC sailors – get great insights from some of our fabulous C sailors. The bar will be open – no food. If people are interested we can order from the Dockside. Watch the races on the internet this

week at http://kattack.com/. From

WHAT’S HAPPENING AT THE LBYC

Ice Burglar on the Loose

Last year some fishermen

discovered our ice chest behind

the club.

Please keep this locked!

The key is located at the bar.

You will need the key to open

and lock the ice chest.

Open Bar Shouldn’t Be!

Please remember to lock the bar and

front door when you leave. The door can

be locked open by using an Allen wrench on

the push bar. This allows folks to just pull to

open the door. The push bar is depressed

when the door is “pullable”. Please use the

Allen wrench (located on the windowsill un-

derneath the Beulah map window) to re-

lease the pull bar and lock the bar door.

Beth Kreinbrink has been planting flowers at the LBYC for 15+ years. A labor of love.

Why not set your homepage to www.lbyc.us/ and follow social and sailing news.

Get Ready for the LBSS Trivia Night!

Momentum is building for

the LBSS Trivia Night on June 25. A great meal, a fun team trivia competition, big prizes,

chance to win a brand new sail (or pocket some cash), and a voice auction

all in support of the Lake Beulah Sailing School $100 of the $125 admission price is a tax deductible donation. This event replaces the LBSS auction dinner and will help us with our annual operating costs as we get ready to move to a new lease structure that has an upfront payment and smaller annual payments. LBSS is a great bargain for the lake; our programs not only teach sailing – they teach sportsmanship, a love of the environment, and leadership. Here’s how the trivia competition works. You can join one of the teams being formed by several enterprising table captains, or just sign up and we will put you on a diverse team. Diversity is key, as the questions span a range of age and interests. Our game will be run by Team Trivia Wisconsin. They are very experienced at running these events. Check out their website at www.teamtriviawi.com. Team prizes are awesome – free drinks at the LBYC bar for the season, or free social event admission for the season, with a third prize of a free meal at the Dockside. Besides the trivia, you get a free raffle ticket to win a brand new sail from Melges (or pocket the cash), as well as a short voice auction with some premium items. All this plus two free drink tickets and a great meal of filet, shrimp skewers, baked potato with fixings, Caesar salad, vegetable, key lime pie. Plus appetizers!

RSVP by 6-21 Register on line at lbyc.us or call Al or Linda Haeger at (815) 725-5271 or (262) 642-7723 or [email protected].

2011 LBSS Opti Regatta is quickly approaching on Monday, June 27th

changes weekly with each new publication. Our

Beulah sailors are often featured due to our sail-

ing prowess.
