The publication identifies more than 3,200 languages in the Asia Pacific region in 28 major linguistic families. Among these languages is Mandarin, spoken by almost 900 million people predominantly in China, while Papua New Guinea is home to over 800 languages, of which more than 350 are spoken by less than 1,000 people. This map depicts the traditional linguistic homelands of each language family. Populations away from their homelands are not mapped and polygons are not provided for languages which are considered widespread in a country, e.g. where the language polygon would be essentially identical to the country boundary. Language data are from the World Language Mapping System (WLMS) and are available from GMI (http://www.gmi.org/wlms/) Afro-Asiatic Altaic Amto-Musan Andamanese Australian Austro-Asiatic Austronesian Bayono-Awbono Dravidian East Bird's Head East Papuan Geelvink Bay Hmong-Mien Indo-European Japanese Kwomtari-Baibai Language Isolate Left May Lower Mamberamo Mixed Language Sepik-Ramu Sino-Tibetan Sko Tai-Kadai Torricelli Trans-New Guinea Unclassified West Papuan LANGUAGE FAMILY
