Explanatory Notes

The Non-Food and Industrial Crops Quarterly Bulletin provides updates on basic production data on major non-food and industrial crops. The report covers the major non-food and industrial crops, namely, abaca, coconut, coffee, rubber, sugarcane and tobacco. These crops are highlighted in the report on the Performance of Agriculture which is released quarterly by the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics (BAS). Production data are based on the results of the Quarterly Crop Production Survey (CrPS) of BAS, Quarterly Coconut Production Survey (QCPS) of the Philippine Coconut Authority and BAS, and Canes Milled as reported by sugar milling districts of the Sugar Regulatory Administration (SRA).

Production January-March 2010 Abaca. Production in the first quarter of 2010 was 16.65 thousand mt or

1.69 percent lower compared to year ago level of 16.94 thousand mt.

Lower price and lesser number of buyers dampened harvesting in Aklan,

Antique, Iloilo, Agusan del Sur, Agusan del Norte and Negros Oriental.

The hot weather in ARMM particularly in Sulu province also resulted in

smaller stalks. Likewise, bunchy tops continued to affect farms in Leyte

and Southern Leyte, thus, the 9.20 percent drop in production in Eastern

Visayas (Table 1).

Coconut. Production at 3.67 million mt was up by 1.75 percent from

last year’s round. Production of mature and young nuts increased by

1.71 percent and 3.46 percent, respectively (Table 1). Increased

production of mature nuts was attributed to improved demand in Aurora

and the increase in number of bearing trees in Marinduque, Bohol,

Zamboanga del Norte, North Cotabato, Sultan Kudarat and Agusan del

Sur. Higher application rate of fertilizer as a result of the distribution

program of PCA in Misamis Oriental, Guimaras, Zamboanga Sibugay

and in the provinces of SOCCSKSARGEN also contributed to the

increase in production. On the other hand, sustained demand for buko

juice due to the hot weather and higher price led to increased harvesting

of green nuts.

Coffee. The hot weather

condition that prevailed

during the reference period

had adversely affected

production of all varieties of

coffee. Production of Arabica

dropped by 1.57 percent.

Buyer’s preference for

Robusta coffee caused a drop in Excelsa harvests by 81.56 percent

in Agusan del Sur while delicate peace and order situation was cited in

Sulu. For Liberica variety, aged and less productive trees, and lesser

demand led to neglect of farms in the top producing province of Quezon.

With a 42 % share in the national output, the province managed to

produce 64.66 mt in January-March 2010, down from 68.64 mt in 2009

(Table 1). In the case of Robusta coffee, reduced production was the

result of stress due to lack of water in the provinces of Davao Region

and SOCCSKSARGEN. Shifting to banana, oil palm and rubber was

noted in North Cotabato. Robusta coffee production was down by 1.34

percent. Robusta remained the most preferred variety with 76.87

percent share in the total coffee production (Figure 1).

Rubber. Production in the first quarter of 2010 was 58.24 mt which was

8.58 percent lower compared to the 63.71 thousand mt in the same

period of last year (Table 1). This was attributed to the hot weather that

prevailed throughout the country during the period. Some trees in

Basilan were reported to be in the wintering or defoliation phase.

Sugarcane. Production

during January-March

2010 was recorded at

10.08 million mt. This

was lower by 10.94

percent from its level of

11.32 million mt in 2009.

Cane processed for

centrifugal which accounted for 98.20 percent of the total cane output

(Figure 2), went down by 11.70 percent from 11.21 million mt in 2009

to 9.90 million mt in 2010. This was due to the advance harvesting in

October 2009 to January 2010, to cope with feedstock requirements of

sugarmills that went into full blast operation during that period.

Production of cane for panocha/muscovado also decreased due to

stunted growth of canes in Quirino and Sultan Kudarat and the adverse

effect of typhoon Pepeng in Pangasinan. Sustained demand and the use

of good planting materials increased cane production for chewing by

1.20 percent, and basi/vinegar by 3.87 percent. Sugarcane output

intended for ethanol production was recorded at 88.43 thousand mt.

Tobacco. In the first quarter

of the year, Virginia and

other tobacco varieties

particularly Burley, were in

season. Output from these

tobacco varieties buoyed up

production by 9.75 percent,

from 9.73 thousand mt in

2009 to 10.67 thousand mt in 2010. Virginia variety comprised 96.69

percent of the total production (Figure 3). The increased output from the

aforementioned varieties was due to the additional area planted from

corn areas in Ilocos Sur and proper crop maintenance in Abra.

Additional areas were planted to Burley variety in Ilocos Norte, La

Union, Pangasinan and Tarlac as a result of the high prices last year.

Production of native variety dropped by 1.2 percent due to the

decrease in area planted in Negros Occidental, Romblon, Zamboanga

del Sur, Masbate and Maguindanao. Unavailability of planting materials

was also reported in Surigao del Norte and Negros Oriental.

Tobacco. In the first quarter

of the year, Virginia and

other tobacco varieties

particularly Burley, were in

season. Output from these

tobacco varieties buoyed up

production by 9.75 percent,

from 9.73 thousand mt in

2009 to 10.67 thousand mt in 2010. Virginia variety comprised 96.69

percent of the total production (Figure 3). The increased output from the

aforementioned varieties was due to the additional area planted from

corn areas in Ilocos Sur and proper crop maintenance in Abra.

Additional areas were planted to Burley variety in Ilocos Norte, La

Union, Pangasinan and Tarlac as a result of the high prices last year.

Production of native variety dropped by 1.2 percent due to the

decrease in area planted in Negros Occidental, Romblon, Zamboanga

del Sur, Masbate and Maguindanao. Unavailability of planting materials

was also reported in Surigao del Norte and Negros Oriental.

period of last year (Table 1).
