This Makauri School E-Book has been created to share a record of their schools journey in creating what we believe may be the ‘FIRST’ Analemmatic Sundial in Gisborne city. Helped by Ray Sheldrake who has been promoting the concept of Analemmatic (human) Sundials in Gisborne city - to leverage on the claim ‘FIRST’ to see the sun.

Beginning modestly with the young ones to seed the vision for the next generation.

By using a Sundial as part of our teaching syllabus we hope to give this and the next generation familiarity with a unique part of our local Gisborne heritage.

Ray Sheldrake has been promoting the concept of Analemmatic (human) Sundials in Gisborne city - to leverage on the claim ‘FIRST’ to see the sun.

SUNDIAL - SCIENCE: The BIG Question/s eg: How has telling the time developed / improved over time * Design / make: simple to complex , small to large. * Explain how they work / move > Rotation - Sun / Solar System - Light * Experiment - Scientific Method. Make and read sundial at a specific time every day / few days / weeks

* Compare - Contrast / problem pose (what if ) Problem Solve - Sun / Clouds / Seasons / effects on telling time

* Read Sundial different times of the day: Discuss Shadow // what about night time?

* Hypothesis ( Scientific Method - to prove or disprove) eg: The speed of the Shadow depends on the length of the gnomon. May lead to more questions. eg: Is the length of shadow determined by seasons? Why or why not? Experiments to prove / disprove

SCIENCE: Technology Where to place Sundials? What to look for. Do Sundials work on: Equator / North - South Poles - Research / Discuss * Questions: Why do gnomons not point straight up? Where do they point? Human Sundials - make / create.

VOCAB: Gnomon = Greek One that knows or examines - A Gnomon is the part of a Sundial that casts the Shadow. Analemmatic = Pedestal of a Sundial.

History... ‘...Where Time Begins... ’

Here at Makauri School in Gisborne New Zealand, we have had a wonderful learning experience creating the FIRST Analemmatic Sundial for our city.

The Sundial concept celebrates our ‘FIRST’ city status, profile and geographical blessing through this unique creative HUMAN sundial.

Analemmatic Sundials offer a participatory, educational and fun experience for all ages.

By stepping onto our Analemmatic Sundial - the participant brings the sundial to life, as their shadow reveals the moment in TIME.

We believe this to be a NZ FIRST - as no other city in our nation can hold a genuine claim to being the FIRST City to see the Sun.

In October 1884 in Washington DC, USA, their former President Chester A. Arthur invited 41 delegates from 25 nations to what was called the International Meridian Conference

Those gathered, collectively chose the Prime Meridian at the Royal Observatory, Greenwich England, (established by Sir George Airy in 1851) to be the Standard International Measure for TIME.

Thus creating a line that would pass alongside this place in the Southern Hemisphere that would become today’s City of Gisborne, New Zealand.

Creating this historical point of reference allows us to claim another FIRST experience for our city with our Sundial project.
