Greetings! Has it been a month already? Do you remember last month’s message about the phone number for the cab being 4 tu-tu-tu-tu? Well, it turns out that we have a new train service with the number 4 choo-choo-choo-choo. So, be careful when dialing for the Cab, because if you dial the wrong number, a train might pull up to your front door. Did you know that Mark Twain was the pen name of Samuel Clemens? If there was a real Mark Twain, and he was married, we could call his wife Tu-Tu Twain. This observation was brought to you by a guest speaker at our Lay Convention a few years ago. Important things like this I can’t forget. What the rest of the lecture was about, I don’t remember. Aren’t you glad that you are read-ing this article? I was thinking that maybe I should have a pen name too. I was thinking of O Great One or Supreme Master of the Universe or something like that. However, I decided not to do it because it really didn’t reflect on my humble nature. As you well know, I’m the most humble person that I know. There is absolutely no one who is humbler than me. District-Wide “Kick-Off” Picnic SUNDAY, AUGUST 23, 2015

The annual Dharma School “Kick-Off” picnic sponsored by the Valley Isle Dharma School Teachers Association (VIDSTA) will be held on Sunday, August 23, at the Lahaina Jodo Mission. Service begins at 9 a.m. and will be followed with games, swimming, and lunch. Students, family members, and friends are in-vited to attend. In order that enough food is prepared, please call the office at 572-7229 to indicate the number of participants attending the picnic no later than Sun-day, August 9th. There’ll be no temple service at Makawao on August 23rd.

MAKAWAO HONGWANJI PRESCHOOL By: Lei We had such a great summer with our preschoolers who enjoyed many fun activities indoors and outdoors. Due to the warm weather we enjoyed playing at the water tables, pretending we were sailing away with Max of the Wild Things and even got to milk Lani, our pretend cow, out by our barn. One of our fun highlights was making ice cream in a container shaped like a ball so we could roll and toss it outdoors until it turned into cool ice cream. Summer will end soon and we will begin another new school year in August with our 42 preschoolers.

MAKAWAO HONGWANJI JUDO By: Claude

Our judo club will be hosting the 56th annual Honpa Hongwanji State Judo Championship tournament on Labor Day weekend (Sept. 5th and 6th). We are excited to be hosting this tournament for the first time. The tournament venue will be King Kekaulike High School. On Saturday, all the Hongwanji judo clubs will take part in our opening ceremony, which will start by having teams marching into the gym and lining up by club. Our fill in Reverend will conduct a ceremony that includes having two members of each club offer incense. Before the competition starts, we will have a taiko presentation. The Boy Scouts will march in and present the flags and the national anthem will be sung by some of our club members. Following the opening ceremonies will be competition in kata (forms). Next will be three person teams. Boys against boys and girls against girls, by age and weight. Next will be individual competition for open and senior divisions. After the first day of competition, we will host a hospitality night at our social hall. This will be heavy pupus shared among club families and guest instructors and officials. On Sunday, the remainder of individual competition will take place. There will be a concession stand on both days at the school. We are expecting around 150 competitors in all. All the competitors, coaches, and families will gath-er at the Hannibal Tavares Community Center, in Pukalani, for a banquet. This will be around 6 pm on Sun-day. There will be entertainment and awards at the banquet. We have a lot of judo club parents helping out, but we will also be needing some volunteers from our church to help as well. Some of the things that we need help with are: Up to 10 people to help serve at the banquet, donations of pupus to serve before the banquet, and any desserts that can be served after the ban-quet. We are proud of our club and encourage our church members to attend the tournament and/or the ban-quet. For more information or offers to help, contact Claude Moreau, at 283-4145.

Commi ee Reports: Buddhist Educa on: There will be a summer session at the Buddhist Study Center on Oahu, 7/20 to 7/24, en‐tled “What is Jodo Shinshu to You?”.

VP Ac vi es – Thank you to the many volunteers at the recent Garage Sale and Bazaar. Future ac vi es are the Summer General Clean Up, Obon service and dance, Dharma School Picnic, Judo Tournament, Lay Associa on Con‐ven on, Grandparents’ Day Service, and Autumn Higan and Peace Day Service. Maintenance – Report given. The council approves Floyd Nagoshi to take care of the temple car maintenance and repair. Mahalo to Claude Moreau for the repair of the broken window. Nokotsudo – Tuesday hours will be changed to close at 5 p.m..

Old Business: Garage Sale/ Bazaar – Report given. Great turnout from community. Evalua on mee ng to be held. Summer General Clean Up ‐ Need many volunteers for 7/19. Will also trim the peach trees. Obon Services and Dance – Rev. Tennes will conduct the services.

New Business: Newsle er – The council has decided to conduct a trial period of 3 months, and during this me, the dollar amount of the dona ons will be eliminated. The council will reevaluate in November. Judo Tournament – Will be using the kitchen, and will need 10 volunteers to help serve at the banquet. The banquet will be at Hannibal Tavares Center in Pukalani, on September 6, from 5 to 7:30. Please leave a message at the office if you are able to volunteer. Vandalism incident – Kitchen window broken, donated items were stolen. The police report was made, as well as reported to the insurance company. Other Business: Approved Sensei Aoyagi’s request for the $50 annual cost for the Japanese Educa onal Fund for the MHM Japanese School. The MHM secretary will be on vaca on from 7/30 to 8/14. Sharon Nagoshi has volunteered to assist, and will need addi onal volunteers. Please contact the office if you are available. The next Kyodan mee ng is scheduled for August 12, 2015.

HQ BOOKSTORE UPDATE HQ Bookstore is now selling third‐printed white Wasan book, “A TRUE PURE LAND TEACHING JODO SHINSHU and THREE PURE LAND POEMS WRITTEN BY GUTOKU SHINRAN” ($22.00). Wasan is a collec on of Japanese poems wri en by Shinran Shonin. This White Wasan Book is mainly used for daily chan ng of Shoshinge & Wasan. This book was first printed in 1999 by Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii in order to meet the needs of ministers and members who brought up with English as their na ve language. Through this book you will know how to read Japanese by Roman alphabet and how to chant the sutra by music note. Moreover you can read its English meaning on the same page. As we reprinted this third edi on, we had reviewed its con‐tents and some errors or mistyping were corrected. DONATION FROM JODO SHINSHU HONGWANJI‐HA Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii recently received a funding assistance of fi y million Japanese Yen (JPY 50,000,000) from the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji‐ha for the undertaking of the Pacific Buddhist Academy’s new school building.

Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji‐ha recently launched the Comprehensive Advancement Project (宗門合振興計

) which will be executed for 10 accoun ng years from June 1, 2015 through March 31, 2025 to enrich and

promote our organiza on on the occasions of the Commemora on Services of Transmission of Jodo Shinshu tradi on in 2016‐2017, the 850th Anniversary of the birth of Shinran Shonin, and the 800th Anniversary of the establishment of Jodo Shinshu in 2023. One major focus of the Advancement Project is “contribu ng to the general welfare of society based on the

spirit of Buddhism” （の精神に基づく社会への貢献）and, as part of this effort in the Overseas Districts

or interna onally, this funding assistance of JPY 50,000,000 to PBA for the year 2015 was disbursed recently. Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii and Pacific Buddhist Academy are truly grateful for the strong support from the Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji‐ha.

Makawao Hongwanji's 2015 Bazaar was another successful culmination of hard work and dedication. An event such as the bazaar would not be possible without the tremendous amount of work and cooperation from our loyal and hardworking temple members, families, Boy/Cub Scouts and families, Judo families, and friends. Long hours and endless amounts of preparation, which begin many months before the actual bazaar day, are necessary to make these types of weekends happen. Thank you to all of you for your help, for the many, many generous donations of produce, flowers, ingredients, goods , and also for your patronage! Special thanks to those who do far more than just sacrifice one weekend, but, rather, many weekends and weekdays, for without their planning and contributions, the bazaar could not have run as smoothly as it did. THANK YOU FOR ANOTHER SUCCESSFUL SUMMER GARAGE SALE! By Gail H.

This year’s garage sale fell on the 4th and 5th of July. There was a lot of excitement as well as long long lines, but thanks to you, our hard working volunteers, the garage sale was a huge success! We had a record attend-ance of approximately 1,400 people over the two days! A sampling of comments made to the workers were, “everything is so well organized… you have the most amazing items of new and unusual stuff… things are clean and good prices… pleasant and helpful boy scouts… ono food!... the sweetest pineapples! etc., etc.” A big MAHALO to all the men, ladies, kids, affiliated organizations and friends who make it all possible. Be-cause of you, the garage sale continues its huge successes. Customers are very happy and return year after year, bringing new friends through word of mouth. Needless to say, we couldn’t do it without all the generous dona-tions and our hardworking volunteers. Let us not forget. all these hard-working volunteers need to have sustenance! Did you know we have several kitchen crews who feed all the workers during the week? Thank you Cliff Tokumaru for set-up night chili din-ner, thank you Diane Kosaka and Glynis Okamura for Saturday workers lunch, , Jean Nishida for Saturday gar-age sale lunch and Jackie Hashimoto & family for Sunday Bazaar lunch bentos. And much appreciation to all the people who bring us food and snacks to keep us going throughout the week! Special shout outs to Ray, Bobbie, and Haiku Grocery Store for tents and truck- loads of boxes, Andy, Glenna, and their strong-man crew for furniture pick-ups, Paul Nishida for fixing the leaking container roof and trucking huge loads to the dump, Bob & Gille for the extra trip to the landfill, Amy & Richard Blue for all the cleaning and “handy-man” fixing, Clyde and Hamai Appliance for all the newspaper and radio ads and extra trash pic- ups, and Theo Yamamura for the delicious pineapple deliveries! While we may not be able to mention all the individuals who are working hard behind the scenes, we greatly appreciate you devotion, and we humbly ask that you please continue your great support. BAZAAR 2015

GENERAL CLEAN-UP – A DAY OF TEAMWORK By: Marilyn General Clean-up was held on July 19, truly a day of TEAMWORK. As Floyd’s t-shirt said, “TEAMWORK is a lot of people doing what I say.” That’s okay, everyone seemed to know what to do, but we appreciate Floyd for organizing the assignments. Sam used to always report the count of people helping out on Clean-up Day, which was 60, 70, or 80 members showing up some years. Hard to count people but this year’s count was 35 cars and about 50 peo-ple. There were a lot of yellow Cub Scout shirts, teal Boys Scout shirts, and black Judo shirts, all combined more than the number of church members. So, we really appreciate the help they give us. Thank you for wak-ing up so early on a Sunday morning. What time did everybody start? Seven o’clock, Carol was already in the kitchen, and Floyd, Sharon, Peggy, and Darin were already in the church putting up the chochin. There were some people in the yard and by the peach trees, too. By 8:00 there was a wave of people and everyone was cleaning away. Everyone seems to have their “favorite” (or unfavorite) task to do and there was plenty of work for eve-rybody. The church altar, pews, windows, and floors are shiny clean. The flowers in the Nokotsudo look fresh. The peach trees and shrubs are freshly trimmed. The sidewalks, porches, and steps are swept clean. Then, the Obon yagura and ring were set up. This was an adult job as the Scout leaders with Sharon, Floyd, Calvin and Michael, measured and leveled everything. Now, it looked ready for Obon. Thank you to everybody who was able to come and help. AND Thank you for the wonderful lunch. From 1996, Sam’s Message: “We want more people to come and help. Hope to see more new faces. Slowly by slowly the old faces are fading away, therefore we need the new ones to take over. We don’t want to have a wide gap and be stuck with all the work for a few years. …… I don’t know who is the cook for that day, but I am quite sure lunch will be served. We can’t let the hard workers go home hungry.”

TEMPLE SECRETARY ON VACATION ‐ Rie Taketa, our Temple Secretary, will be on vaca on from

July 30th to August 14th. Temple Office will be opened between regular hours from 8:30 am to 1:30 pm, manned by volunteer members.

TROOP 18 NEWS By: Bryson Uchima

The Troop 18 Boy Scouts did a 6.2 mile hike in the Makawao Forest Reserve on June 14. The weather was nice and cool, with a little bit of sprinkles at the end of the hike. On the 4th of July weekend, the Boy Scouts assisted with the Makawao Hongwanji Garage Sale by help-ing with the set-up and also helping customers carry their goods to their cars, putting part of the Scout Law into action by being Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, and Kind! The day after the Garage Sale the Boys Scouts headed up to Camp Maluhia for our 1-week Summer Camp! The weather that week was a little soggy and it stormed on us during Outpost, but overall we had lots of fun while earning tons of merit badges during camp! We even managed to take 1st Place overall in the camp relay competitions! Dominic Flavin also won an award for earning the highest score at camp in Archery! We are very grateful to Aunty Cindy and Uncle Scott McCormick for all of their hard work in coordinating the endless details and for being there for the Troop throughout Summer Camp to make sure everything was in order! We also want to thank Haley Okamura, former Troop 18 Eagle Scout, for filling in the gaps for our required 2-deep leadership! We will be selling our amazing hamburgers at the Makawao Hongwanji Obon festival on July 24th & 25th! We are hoping for nice weather and a good crowd!

The weather was perfect which in turn brought large crowds to both nights. We truly appreciate those who volunteered countless hours of their time in preparing for this joyous celebration. Chow fun was all sold out for Bazaar as well as the 2 nights of Obon. A thousand arigatos and hugs to all of you that helped. We chopped over 200 pounds of veggies and cooked over 1,200 pounds of noodles. It was work, work, and work, but so worth the effort. We laughed, we sweated, we cha ed, we sweated, we ate, and we sweat‐

ed again. This year we invited some new helpers to join in, hopefully they enjoyed themselves and will be back next year. Hear elt thanks to all of you! Thank you all!

MHM PRESCHOOL PROJECT SANDBOX Is this what 14.45 tons of sand look like? Thank you so much to the Preschool Board members that moved all this sand into the sandbox, a barrel at a me, a shovel at a me. Thank good‐ness it was overcast and had periodic sprinkles of rain. We will take pleasure in knowing the children will have fresh sand for the coming school year. Also, thank you to Paul for build‐ing the beau ful faucet set in the out‐door sink. With the help of David, the 2 of them installed it in no me. We are so apprecia ve of every‐one’s commitment to our preschool.
