BELONG“When I came to this surgical group 20 years ago, it was a great place to work, but for a multitude of reasons – including political and economic pressures, as well as changes in health care at that time – our program broke into three, smaller practices. Our team culture became somewhat toxic and led to a good deal of turnover and frustration among the staff. Then a book called Necessary Endings helped me take responsibility for leading my team to a more positive and supportive way of interacting. The book taught me that although I might be willing and able to put up with whatever was happening around me at work, by ignoring the problem I was letting down all the members of my team because they were suffering, too. Around that same time, I learned about a man named Horst Schulze, who was the acting director of the Ritz Carlton hotel chain. Through his example, I learned to employ the concept of ‘love your neighbor as yourself’ to provide great service to both our patients AND our staff. We need to include a focus on our staff and our workplace, or we will burn out.”
