BUILDING HER DREAM CAREER

BRITTANY HARRIS

Brittany started working for a mining advisory and consultancy group straight out of high school and was inspired by the firm and her colleagues. From that experience, she decided that her long-term career goals would include securing a long-term contract with an engineering company and landing a dream role as a project manager.

Brittany enrolled with TAFE Queensland Brisbane on the recommendation of friends who had completed the associate degree.

“A few of my friends who are now studying engineering at university recommended doing the associate degree at TAFE first. They all said the practical skills they learned at TAFE made them feel more confident about going to university.”

Scheree Reeves is an accomplished animator, film producer, and published author, and she puts much of her success down to TAFE Queensland Brisbane’s supportive environment and hands-on learning.

Scheree finished the Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Animation) at TAFE Queensland Brisbane in 2011.

“It was a great move. I’d attempted to start an animation degree at university but found the large and impersonal class sizes didn’t suit me. So I enrolled with TAFE Queensland Brisbane and found the supportive

teacher and student network really worked for me.”

ILLUSTRATING A SUCCESSFUL STORY

Brittany Harris is halfway through her Associate Degree in Civil Engineering and has her sights firmly set on the future.

Brittany now recommends the course to anyone considering engineering and attributes her academic success to TAFE Queensland Brisbane’s smaller class sizes and collaborative project work.

“When you work on group projects you learn how to collaborate and get an end-result as a team. It’s such an important

skill to have as an engineer. And it’s great to bounce ideas off a team in a supportive environment. It’s also easier to learn and participate in the smaller classes. You have more one-on-one time with the lecturers.”

Brittany said that the industry exposure and contact she got through the course was a highlight, and that by throwing herself into her

studies she got so much more out of the experience.

“Make the most of your learning journey and get involved in your industry at an early stage of your course. TAFE has the contacts. You just have to make use of them. You have nothing to lose and everything to gain.”

After completing the advanced diploma, Scheree carved herself a place in the animation world. In 2013, she published her first art book and ran a successful Indiegogo crowdfunding campaign, which saw her jet set off to Austin, Texas to attend RTX - an annual gaming and Internet convention. Last year she made three short animated films, Stampede of the Fox, Sand Dragon and Black Sheep, and this year she self-published the first issue of her own comic, ExtraOrdinary.

While dreaming of one day being a production assistant or in-house artist/designer in a studio, Scheree keeps busy working as a freelancer and exhibiting as an artist in anime and pop culture conventions such as Supanova and Oz Comic-Con.

Scheree is due to complete her Bachelor of Animation at Griffith University at the end of 2015.

SCHEREE REEVES

AWARD-WINNING FILMMAKER CHOOSES TAFE AGAINTAFE graduate Beau Eastman wants to be the next David Attenborough. And judging from his growing portfolio of work and expanding list of award wins, he may just get there.

As a first step in his plan, Beau enrolled in a Certificate IV in Screen at TAFE Queensland, straight after finishing high school.

After finishing his course, Beau got to work, and his new skills and natural talent paid dividends. He picked up three awards in quick succession, including Best Film and Best Director award at the Reelife Short Film Festival for the documentary he made called Our Guru of Surfing.

On the back of his award wins, Beau was approached by the RSPCA to create films to help raise awareness and support.

“As an animal lover, I was honoured to produce films that would ultimately be used to benefit the safety and welfare of animals in shelters.”

Beau’s own career in animal handling has also taken off. He started working at Underwater World on the Sunshine Coast as a retail assistant, but quickly moved into snake-handling and then as an aquarist working with sharks and crustaceans.

A few years later, Beau landed his dream job at Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary as an animal handler, presenting various shows to an enthralled audience. He also recently made a short video for the Currumbin Wildlife Animal Hospital.

a wildlife documentary filmmaker.”

To formalise the skills he’s learning on the job, Beau is now enrolled in a Certificate III in Captive Animals at TAFE Queensland Brisbane.

OUR STUDENTS GO GLOBAL

TAFE Queensland Brisbane students are jet-setting around the globe as part of their studies. Through a partnership with the Global Education Skills Alliance, students have the opportunity to set off on study abroad programs, immersing themselves in different cultures and developing their skills and networks within their chosen industries.

Students can choose from a number of different study abroad programs, from short-term tours led by teaching staff, to international internships. Students can even study at a partner institute for a semester.

Since December last year, more than thirty students from fashion, millinery, and visual arts have travelled to exciting destinations, including New York and the Gujarat District in India. Later this year hospitality, travel

and tourism students will head to Switzerland, fashion students will visit Hong Kong and China, and business students will expand their knowledge in Chile.

Plans for further study opportunities throughout South East Asia, Europe, and North and South America are already underway.

WHERE OUR STUDENTS MAKE GREAT HAPPEN

IT’S TRUE. WE’VE HAD SOME WORK DONE.

Our music studios are among the best equipped in the country, with commercial-quality audio production equipment and software, and a shiny new Solid State Logic Duality SE mixing console – one of only six in Australia. The Gig Studio is the Taj Mahal of live musical performance spaces, and is linked to a control room running Duality and ProTools software.

The future is here in our brand new Games Innovation and Research Lab, equipped with duel screen Area 51 gaming machines, driving simulators, pin ball machines and a suite of the latest gaming consoles. On top of that we’ve just installed state-of-the-art motion capture systems, Oculus Rift virtual reality sets, and 3D printers and scanners.

Our dental prosthetics students aren’t missing out either, with TAFE Queensland Brisbane securing the latest in Computer Animated Design (CAD) and Computer Animated Milling (CAM) systems. Our dental students will learn the most up-to-date techniques in digital dentistry on the 3 shape/Weiland CAD CAM system, which has completely changed the landscape of design and manufacture in the dental prosthetics industry.

Our Loganlea campus has also undergone an enormous facelift, with almost $2 million invested in on-site campus improvements. Students now have access to new horticulture and animal sciences facilities, as well as an extension to the outdoor student common grounds. Our building exteriors have also had a makeover – expect a lot more colour. New computer facilities, increased Wi-Fi capabilities, and a campus-wide air-conditioning refurbishments are underway and due to be completed by the end of 2015.
