Victoria Minnis has recently just completed her CIM Diploma in Marketing at Belfast Met. Victoria who is currently employed with Hughes Insurance started with the company selling insurance but then moved into an administrative marketing role before progressing on to her current role as marketing manager for the company.

She always had an interest in marketing but as she had no formal marketing qualifications, Victoria started at the College doing the CIM Certificate in Marketing which gave her a really good foundation in the subject and allowed her to get a good understanding of the theory she needed.

After completing the certificate course this then allowed her to progress on to do the Diploma in Marketing which she said has enabled her to move up the career ladder within Hughes. Victoria said “I have been able to progress in my marketing career thanks to completing the CIM qualifications. Both the certificate and the diploma have been invaluable in providing me with the knowledge and theory that I have been able to apply to my role within Hughes. The lecturers on the course are all great and very helpful and are always willing to go the extra mile to give you all the help and guidance to get you through the course. I feel that all the hard work and late evenings was totally worthwhile and I would recommend the CIM qualification to anyone who is wanting to get into marketing or progress in their career”.

Victoria is taking a well-deserved break from studying for the time being and wants to continue working with Hughes and as the company grows she hopes new opportunities will open up in the future.

Some of the advantages of studying a foundation degree or an HND include:

CostTuition fees are often less than the fees for an Honours degree.

Skills and knowledgeThey can help you progress in your chosen career and will equip you with a combination of technical skills, academic knowledge and the other skills that employers are increasingly demanding.

Smaller classesThe courses often have smaller class sizes and more one-to-one contact with tutors than Honours degrees.

Recognised Higher Education QualificationThey are a recognised Higher Education qualification in their own right.

Route to universitySuccessful foundation degree/HND graduates are offered a route to an Honours degree at university if they wish to follow that path.

Flexible and close to homeThey offer those students with work or family commitments the flexibility to study part-time and close to home. This can mean reduced travel time and costs.

Work experienceAll foundation degrees provide work experience which allows students to put their learning into practice.

No qualifications necessaryApplicants who lack formal qualifications but who can show that they have relevant experience, skills and aptitudes may also be considered for entry to a Foundation degree/HND through a process known as Accreditation of Prior Experiential Learning (APEL).

Skills gapThe intermediate Higher Education level at which foundation degrees/HNDs are pitched represents the level at which Northern Ireland skills gap is greatest and the qualification is therefore likely to improve your employment prospects.

Gaining a foundation degree can also improve your chances of earning more money. A recent study by DEL showed that people with a level 4/5 qualification are likely to be earning £484 per week as opposed to those with Level 3 qualifications which is £314 per week. Your chances of being in employment are also significantly increased.

Check out our range of foundation degrees and HNDs throughout the prospectus and gain your higher education qualification.

Foundation Degrees and HNDs are designed and delivered through partnership between employers/employer organisations, universities and further education colleges. This means that as a graduate you will be equipped with the specific skills that employers are looking for.

Mairead aspired to study Health and Social Care as an A Level however chose a different path and pursued a Drama course at QUB. However after she finished the first year at Queen’s she knew that she wasn’t enjoying it and didn’t plan to go back to complete the course.

Mairead applied for her part-time HND Health & Social Care course at Belfast Met and soon found her feet and where her true passion lay and gained valuable experience during her course by taking part in a voluntary placement set up by the College.

“Completing the HND in Health and Social Care was vital in order for me to be where I am now. Within a couple of months of joining the course I knew that I wanted to work in the homeless sector and was pointed in the direction of The Welcome Organisation.”

Mairead has achieved a qualification, placement experience and secured a job with The Welcome Organisation in a career that she is happy to progress in.

“Without the knowledge I gained from the course achieving my current role would never have been possible, as I was able to apply what I had learnt, as well as gaining voluntary experience from working with people that are homeless.”

Mairead’s course like many others on offer at Belfast Met has offered her a fully rounded experience of theory and practical work in her field, which covered a wide range of modules that were relevant to her specialist sector as well as allowing her to gain skills that she could apply in future roles in the health and social sector.

“I had no idea how much my life would change for the better when I signed up for the part-time HND, I am now working full-time in a job I adore so much and I am very thankful for the opportunity Belfast Met has given me”.

Connected Cyber Security

Through the Connected programme businesses can access expertise, skills and facilities on Cyber Security.

With an increased use of information technology comes a rise in Cyber Crime, it is estimated that in the 12 months to June 2015, there were up to 5.1million incidents of fraud, and 2.5 million Cyber Crimes. We continue to hear about Cyber Crime on a regular basis; from the theft of banking details to the publishing of customer data. Not only is this a serious breach of data protection and a publicity nightmare for the company, it can come with a huge financial cost; for SMEs the average cost of the worst breaches are between £75,000 and £310,800.

Industry WorkshopsThrough the Connected programme, Belfast Met is working alongside Ulster University to develop course content and bespoke workshops for local businesses. Cyber Security affects every industry at a range of different levels, the College provide knowledge workshops at all levels to upskill employees and provide them with new processes for reviewing their cyber security.

UpskillingThe College can deliver bespoke training in Information Security which includes system implementation, cyber threats, vulnerability and security controls. We also work with companies to complete internal audits into the effectiveness of company IT security systems, upskilling employees on how to complete and monitor these audits in future.

Belfast Metropolitan College recognise Cyber Security as a critical issue for companies and through the Connected Programme is completing detailed market analysis to develop specialised support for businesses across Northern Ireland.

• Are you a foreign national living in Northern Ireland?

• Do you need to improve your English Language skills for work or simply to make friends whilst living here?

• Would you like to complete an accredited recognised English Language qualification that would improve your written and spoken English?

Then you have come to the right place. Belfast Met offers a wide range of courses in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) which focus on general, academic and professional English.

Our ESOL courses are particularly suitable if you are taking up residency in Northern Ireland as you will develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. ESOL is offered at five levels – Entry 1, Entry 2, Entry 3, Level 1 and Level 2. You will take the City & Guilds Skills for Life exams at the end of the course. These courses are available part-time (5 hours per week) or on an intensive basis (14 hours per week). The Level 1 and Level 2 qualifications are recognised by UK employers and some educational establishments.

We also offer internationally recognised qualification classes which may help you to gain employment or undertake further studies, either here or abroad.

English as a Foreign Language (EFL) classes are offered at four levels - Entry Level (B1*), Level 1 (B2*), Level 2 (C1*) and Level 3 (C2*). These courses are available part-time (6 hours per week) or on an intensive basis (17.5 hours per week). These include:• Cambridge English Entry Level

Certificate in ESOL International (Preliminary)

• Cambridge English Level 1 Certificate in ESOL International (First)

• Cambridge English Level 2 Certificate in ESOL International (Advanced)

• Cambridge English Level 3 Certificate in ESOL International (Proficiency).

The College also offers IELTS preparation courses and the Cambridge ESOL Level 5 Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults (CELTA). This courses will lead to a qualification which allows you to teach English at home or abroad to speakers of other languages.

*Level equivalents on the Common European Framework Reference for Languages (CEFR)Assessment and Enrolment.

All new students must take an English test (assessment). This helps us choose a class at the right level for you. You have two options: Online assessment or paper based assessment. Assessment takes place at the College’s Titanic Quarter Campus. You must book a place online. You must arrive at the beginning of the session, if you are late, it may not be possible for us to assess you. You also need to bring Photo ID (e.g. valid passport or national identity card) to the assessment session.

If you wish to do the online assessment, please email: [email protected]

If you prefer not to do the online assessment, you can do the assessment at the College. You must book a place via the following link: www.belfastmet.ac.uk/esol

You must bring Photo ID (e.g. valid passport or national identity card) to the assessment session.

The higher level apprenticeships will include a combination of ‘on and off the job’ training. The ‘off the job’ training element will be delivered by Belfast Met on a day release basis for a two year period. How Can Your Career Benefit from a Higher Apprenticeship?

• Employability• A Recognised Qualification• A Stepping Stone to further studies• Earn While You Learn• Debt-free

Aim Higher with aHigher Level Apprenticeship

The Benefits to EmployersHigher Level Apprenticeships enable employers to train staff to the level required as well as assuring that there are people available with strong technical and good employability skills. Other benefits include:

• staff are trained to the employer’s specific requirements;• apprentices can help fill skills gap;• increased productivity; and• a higher calibre of staff.

Belfast Metropolitan College are delighted to be delivering a range of Higher Level Apprenticeships in the following subjects – Accountancy, Social Media & Digital Marketing, Software Engineering, Computing Infrastructure, Building Services & Renewable Energies. For further information on any of these courses check out our website www.belfastmet.ac.uk.

Higher Apprenticeships are aimed at anyone who has completed A Levels (or equivalent). More than 70% of unemployed participants go on to jobs, training or education within three months of completing the course.

If you are between 16-25, are lacking in confidence, unsure of what you want to do in life, leaving care, a young offender, under-achiever or long-term unemployed, this is the course for you.

Belfast Met offers Prince’s Trust Team programmes across Belfast with starting dates in September, January and April. To enquire or for further information contact Gary Brammeld, tel: 028 9053 3107 or email: [email protected].
