Consultation workshops
Consultation and Research:
Research and strategy development facilitated and delivered by ‘The
Hamilton Project’ working through a steering group.
Wide ranging consultation with culture and heritage organisations such
as Silk Heritage Trust, Barnaby, The Silk Quarter and Macclesfield
College through to the Civic Society, Incubation Arts and local creative
industries.
Heritage research conducted, using local sources such as Civic Society
members through to local history references at library.
Research into other relevant data, such as employment share stats,
audience development research, Town Centre Vision etc.
Macclesfield Heritage & Culture strategy
Includes an assessment of ‘what already exists’ i.e.
current facilities
Proposes a 10 year strategic vision to facilitate
improvement
Maps out a strategy for working towards this vision
Identifies methods of delivery and marketing the
vision
Sets the ‘tone’ and framework for culture led town
centre regeneration
Sets the context for skills, creative industries and
the cultural/visitor economy, project development,
investment and funding applications.
Aim of the strategy:
The aim is to produce a strategy so that the heritage and cultural activity
of Macclesfield will contribute to the economic and social wellbeing of
residents and visitors, based on its built environment, historical legacy
and current cultural vibrancy.
The story:
Identification of the ‘story’, identifying key
themes to be developed to create a
focus for the delivery of the strategy
(marketing, project development,
partnerships). ‘Stories’ examined as part of
the consultation included:
‘silk’, ‘creativity’ and
‘entrepreneurship/industry’.
Themes help tell the story and deliver the
strategy...
1. Promotion / Communication: Macclesfield’s
culture and heritage should be more visible
2. Culture and heritage synthesis with business:
benefits of culture and heritage working with
business, encouraging sponsorship and
philanthropy?
3. Digital Industries and Entrepreneurship: Digital
industries and engagement by the culture and
heritage sector
4. Maximise Use of Heritage facilities: The
strategy will support exposing the value in what is
currently available, and enable the process of
looking at alternative uses for spaces
5. Changing perception – inward and outward:
changing perceptions of the Town, to both its own
residents and to potential visitors.
6. Sustain and Nurture: creating a sustainable and
thriving Town Centre keeping a balance between
an independent, organically grown Heritage and
Culture sector and a more co-ordinated and
corporate approach.
Action plan
An action plan has been developed to guide the
achievement of the strategy’s objectives. Key actions
include:
Establishing a Partnership Group to champion and
oversee delivery of the Strategy, initially led and
supported by Cheshire East Council.
To facilitate the identification of potential partnerships
and collaborations that would help realise funding
opportunities.
Establishing and publicising a sustainable annual
programme of events and activities that will increase
footfall through the town and animate spaces
providing activity throughout the year.
Developing and delivering a marketing strategy,
which includes prominent interventions.
Work with Economic Regeneration/ Inward
Investment teams to provide support to attract and
develop creative industries.
Identification of existing skills and resources to help
deliver the programme.
Creating/developing a platform with the Partnership
Group for information sharing.

Network, lobby and share information;
Seek resources to deliver the strategy;
Make strategic connections
Commission selected projects and programmes;
