Pin Your Income with Pinterest
With over 12 million unique visitors each month, Pinterest is the fastest growing
website ever. While it is new, it definitely attracts engaged users, with the average
user spending over 98 minutes a day on the site.
While most users go to Pinterest to browse through pictures, marketers use the site
to get some quality do-follow links. These links help with search engine
optimization, so you can use them to get a higher ranking for your site. You can also
use them to drive traffic to your site.
This training is going to help you get the most out of Pinterest. First, though, you
need to get acquainted with the site, and then you’ll need to create your account.
Get Aquatinted with Pinterest
Go to Pinterest.com and access the terms of service by going to “About” and
selecting “Terms of Service.” Be sure to read over the terms so you won’t have any
trouble following the rules.
Once you read the terms of service, take a moment to check out the site. Go to the
top of the page and use the category search feature. Then, you can find some
pictures and videos that are related to your niche.
4
Request an Invitation
Once you’ve taken a look around, you’ll be ready to create your account. Unlike
Facebook, where you can just sign up for an account, you actually have to request
an invitation to be a part of Pinterest.
You have two options for this. One, you can click “request an invite.” Then, you’ll
need to input your email address and click “request invitation.”
If you go this route, it will take a couple of days to get your account set up. If you
want to set your account up sooner, you can ask a member to send you an
invitation. Simply find one of your friends who are using Pinterest and ask them for
an invitation. Each account has a set number of invitations that the account holder
can give out. If your friend has an invitation left, they can invite you and you can
get started immediately.
Now that your invitation is in the works, it’s time to learn some Pinterest lingo.
5
Pinterest Definitions and Lingo
I’m going to go over some basic terms you’ll come across when you Pinterest.
Pins
“Pins” is the most common word used on Pinterest. It
refers to a bookmark with an image or a video. You can
pin images and videos from websites or your computer.
Boards
“Boards” are a collection of pins. You can create specific
boards for your account. For instance, you might have a
board for products, a board for deals, and a board for
contests.
Contributor Boards
These are boards that are run by your fans.
$
If you put a dollar sign in front of your pin, it will show up
in the “gifts” section of Pinterest. The gift section has
products that people can purchase, so you want to add one
of these signs to your products.
Profile
This refers to your Pinterest profile. Be sure to upload a
good photo or a logo, and add keywords in so people can
find you.
Re-pins
This refers to the process of sharing someone else’s pin.
For instance, if you like someone’s pin, you can re-pin it so
6
it will show up on one of your boards. People can also re-
pin your pins.
Likes
You’re probably familiar with the “Like” feature on
Facebook. Pinterest has as similar feature. You can like
other people’s pins, and people can like your pins.
Comments
You can comment on other people’s pins, and they can
comment on yours.
#
Hashtags signify categories in Pinterest. Thus, if you
want your pin to show up in the Internet marketing
category, you need to put a hashtag in front of the key
phrase “Internet marketing.”
@
Use this symbol if you want to suggest a pin to another
user. It’s a good idea to suggest pins to power users (i.e.
people who have a lot of fans).
Now that you know the lingo, you’re almost ready to learn how to use the site for
marketing. First, though, I want to go over the spam marketing method. I don’t
recommend that you use this method. However, it’s important that you are familiar
with it. That way, you’ll be able to avoid it. You’ll also be able to identify people who
use this method. Then, you can avoid them as well.
The Spam Method
People who use the spam method follow a few steps. First, they create an account.
Once they do that, they use their invitations to create more accounts. Then, they set
the accounts up to auto confirm each account. Then, they implement auto following
based on keywords.
7
Once they follow some people, they start posting pins of product images with
affiliate links. They typically use a bot so they can post hundreds or thousands of
the links each day.
They monitor their pins and repost the ones that are the most popular. They
usually use a bot for this as well.
This is a really annoying form of marketing, and I do not recommend it.
Now that I’ve talked about the spam technique, let’s look at some legitimate
techniques.
Create an Online Catalogue
This is one of the most popular marketing methods on Pinterest. You can create an
online catalogue that has pictures of your products. If you have several types of
products, you can create different boards. For instance, if you sell jewelry, you can
have boards for earrings, necklaces and bracelets.
There are a couple of things you need to keep in mind when you use this method.
One, consider attaching price to the image. Two, be sure to connect the image with
the correct product description page. Then, if someone clicks on the image, he will
be directed to your product page. Once there, he can read about it and then make a
purchase.
8
Create Demographic Driven Pin Boards
You can also use Pinterest to create demographic driven pin boards. If you do this,
you want each pin board to appeal to a specific demographic. For instance, let’s say
you run an online internet marketing company. You could create pin boards for
different services or information that your customers need. For example, you could
have pin boards for SEO, PPC, social media, and so on. You could even narrow it
down even further by creating pin boards for SEO for ecommerce, SEO for blogs,
PPC for direct marketing, and so on.
Start a Contest
This is one of the best ways to use Pinterest for marketing. It’s important to note
that you can’t start a contest directly on Pinterest. Instead, you’ll need to start the
content on Facebook or another social network. However once the contest is started,
you can have people enter by submitting images to a board on Pinterest. For
instance, let’s say you market exercise equipment. You can start a weight loss
contest and have people pin their before and after photos on a special board on
Pinterest.
9
Post Video Galleries
Video galleries are another great way to market on Pinterest. The sky really is the
limit with this, but a couple of options really stand out. Tutorials and recorded
segments of conferences do really well on Pinterest. For instance, if you’re an
Internet marketer, you could record a brief tutorial on keyword research and post it
on Pinterest.
Now that you have some marketing ideas, I want to give you a couple of pointers.
Put More Images in Your Content that You Promote it on Pinterest
You can increase your exposure on Pinterest by adding additional images to your
blog posts or website, and then pinning them to Pinterest. Also, don’t be afraid to
create an info graphic or two on your blog or website, and then pin it to Pinterest.
Info graphics are great visuals, and people tend to like them. They also tend to
share them, so be sure to add one or two to your Pinterest account.
10
Cross Promotion
You also want to use Pinterest cross promote yourself, your products, and your
posts. For instance, if you post a picture on Facebook, you should upload it to
Pinterest as well. If you upload a blog, post an image that goes with the blog on
Pinterest. That way, you can drive traffic to your different networks. Just use a
little restraint when you do this. You don’t want every post to be self-promotion.
Every three to five posts can be promotional in nature, but you don’t want to overdo
it.
Now, let’s look at how you can use Pinterest to connect with your audience.
Show the Face of Your Business
You can use Pinterest to show the face of your business. This will help you make
personal connection with your customer base. For instance, you can create a “Faces
of My Company” board, and then pin photos of people from your company. This will
work, even if you’re the only member of your company.
Tell Your Company’s Story
Every company has a story, and you can use Pinterest to tell that story. Create a
board about your company, and pin pictures that ell your company’s story.
Pin Photos of Your Customers
Finally, you can pin photos of your customers. Happy customers can help you
accomplish two things. First, of course, they are great marketing tools. When people
11
that you have happy customers, they will want to try you out as well. Two, happy
customers will help you connect with your audience. With that in mind, encourage
your customers to send in photos. Also, if you have an event, take some photos and
pin them to your customer board. Just be sure to let people know that you’re going
to put the pictures up on Pinterest.
Now, let’s look at how you can increase your exposure with Pinterest optimization.
Pinterest Optimization
You want to have as many followers on Pinterest as possible, which means you need
to optimize your account. There are several things you can do to make this happen.
Your Profile
First and foremost, you need to fill out your profile completely. Complete the
“about” section, and be sure to include an image and some keywords. Also, add your
website’s URL to your profile.
12
Connect Your Social Profiles
Next, you need to connect your social profiles. Put a Pinterest button your website
or blog, and include information about your Pinterest account on your Facebook and
Twitter profiles.
Pin Consistently
Don’t just set your account up and then pin every once in a while. Get on a schedule
and follow it.
Add Descriptions to Each and Every Pin
Be sure to add a description (with keywords) every time you post a pin. Don’t go
overboard with the keywords. Just put in one or two vital keywords so people can
find your pins.
13
Re-pin Popular Pins
Be sure to re-pin popular pins that are related to your market, product or brand.
Two things will happen when you do this. First, the original pinner will be notified.
That means you’ll stand out to him. Two, you’ll get some traffic, since you’ll have a
popular pin on one of your boards.
Connect with Other Users
Finally, you need to follow others. Once you do that, you need to comment on and
“like” their pins. That will help you connect with them. Connections will turn into
followers.
Now, let’s move on to advanced Pinterest techniques.
14
Pinterest Optimization to Increase Rankings and Followers
I’m going to go over some advanced techniques you can use to increase your ranking
and number of followers. Be sure to use all of these techniques.
Pin Great Pins
You need to pin great pins. That means you need to pin things that are hot topics,
humorous, provoking, attention grabbing or controversial. These types of pins will
get you noticed.
Avoid Wide Images
Because of the way Pinterest is formatted, you should avoid wide images. However,
you can definitely use long images. Long images look great on the site.
Be Sustainable
You need to stay active on Pinterest. You should spend a few minutes a day, every
other day on Pinterest. That way, you can find some great pins to re-pin, and you
can keep providing your followers with new, fresh images. Also, remember, you
should only only self-promote every three to five posts.
15
Make Sure Your Profile Isn’t Spammy
You want to look like a real person instead of a bot. Thus, while it’s important to
use keywords in your profile, you don’t want every other word to be a keyword. That
looks spammy.
Use Keywords in Your Boards
Target your traffic by adding keywords to your boards as well. You only need to use
one or two keywords for your boards. Just make sure they’re relevant so you’ll
attract your target market.
Edit!
You should always ask yourself how strong your board is. If you don’t think it’s
strong, edit it. That way, you’ll get more re-pins, likes and comments.
Add a Follow on Pinterest and “Pin It” Button to Your Website
I mentioned this earlier, but it’s worth repeating. Include a “Follow on Pinterest”
and “Pin it Button” on your website and blog.
Now let’s move on to some advanced selling techniques.
16
Advanced Selling Techniques
There are a couple of options for selling products on Pinterest. Let‘s look at both
options, and then I’ll give you some tips.
Affiliates Products
First, of course, you can promote affiliate products. You can find products on
ClickBank, Amazon or one of the other networks and market them via Pinterest. If
you do this, there are a few things to keep in mind. One, the price should be cheaper
than what people could find at Wal-Mart. Two, you should not link directly to the
affiliate product. Pinterest actually changes affiliate links so they can make the
commission. You can get around that by having a marketplace on your website, and
then linking to the marketplace. Then, when people go to your site, they can click on
a link and you’ll get your affiliate commission.
CPA
CPA, or cost per action, is another option. If you choose this option, you will get
more just for generating leads. You can find these offers on offervault.net and other
CPA sites.
17
Pinterest Shop
Regardless of what type of offer you’re trying to promote, there are a few things you
need to keep in mind.
Once you get your shop set up and do all of these things, take some time to find
some top influencers and follow them. Take some cues from them so you can copy
some good habits. Also, re-pin some of their pins so you can get some of their traffic
by default.
1. Stay on topic. If you’re trying to sell weight loss items, be sure the board only has information related to that niche. Don’t throw something in about video games. It won’t’ make sense, and it will hurt you and your sales.
2. Don’t just push sales. Give away some free information as well. That way, you can earn people’s trust and make them more likely to make a purchase.
3. Put your shop in the right category. That way, your customer base can find you.
18
Ninja Following Technique
Now, I’m going to give you a really cool technique you can use to get more followers.
You just need to follow a few steps.
1. Look for power pinners. 2. Follow their boards. 3. Pin the most re-pinned items to your board. 4. Look for some pins that the power user might like. You can find
potential pins on Pinterest or on the Internet. 5. Create your own pin and add @userprofilename at the end of
your description. You’ll put the power pinner’s user name after the “@” symbol.
6. Once you post the pin, the power pinner will receive a message. If he likes the pin, there’s a good chance he will re-pin it, which means his followers will see it. Then, you can get some massive traffic, and you will likely get some more followers out of the process.
19
Ninja Pinterest Traffic Technique
Finally, I want to give you a ninja traffic technique. Just follow these steps and you
can get lots of traffic to your website, via Pinterest.
If you follow these steps, people will find your product when they search Pinterest.
Then, they’ll visit your site.
Use all the tips and techniques in this guide so you can start making money with
Pinterest!
1. Sell a product on a website. 2. Create an image of the product and post it on your site. 3. Install a “Pin It” button on your website 4. Pin the image to one of your Pinterest boards. 5. Be sure to link to the actual page instead of the root domain.
That way, people will go to the post or page that focuses on the product.
6. Put keywords in the description so it will show up in search results.
