Career inspiration
Discover real life engineering career stories and see where a career in engineering could take you.
3 | Whose crew are you?1 | Uncover the clues
See engineering like you’ve never seen it before including careers in robotics, artificial intelligence and medical technology.
Curious about how to become an engineer? There are different routes in to suit your interests and learning style from university to on-the job training – check out this video from the Year of Engineering.
Check out this film to learn about some of the different roles you could do as an engineer – from creating lower carbon power stations, or making building more sustainable.

Whose crew are you?
Not sure engineering is for you? Take the Whose Crew Are You? quiz and match your skills and interests to different careers.
As you probably saw at the festival, the best ideas are created by teams of people with different skills and interests working together, so here’s your chance to discover the crew that’s right for you!

Break it to make it
Did you check out our reverse engineering activity before the festival? Reverse engineering involves taking things apart to understand how they work, to make the design better than before. It’s such an important part of the design process
that we had students like you reverse engineer a Shell Eco-marathon car at the festival too.
Give it a go at home with some everyday objects – just don’t try it on your parents’ phone! And remember to always ask parents’ permission and ensure you’ve taken relevant safety precautions before trying this at home.
You will need:
A screwdriver
A small broken or old item, such as a wind-up toy, water pistol or a click pen
A pen and paper
5 | Are you a holiday maker?3 | Whose crew are you?
Draw the item and label the
parts you can see
What shape is the item? What materials is it made of? Why?
Carefully take the item apart using a
screwdriver
Draw the inside of the item. Label any
parts you know
How do the parts work together?
Carefully put the item back together
again
Draw your own design based upon what you’ve learned
