There’s a certain part of the day when we tend to dial up our energy use. We get home from work; switch on the air con and watch a bit of telly. Next thing you know, it’s all lights on, microwave, oven and stove. This puts a fair bit of strain on our electricity supply, so we came up with PowerShift to help solve the issue.

What is PowerShift?

To put it simply, if you can shift your electricity consumption from Super Peak or Peak to Off-peak, you’ll get cheaper rates. These rates change depending on the day and time of day that you use energy.

How PowerShift works

Essentially PowerShift comes down to one thing: If you can avoid using electricity in the ‘Super Peak’ period, you could save money. Unlike the Synergy Home Plan® (A1) tariff where a flat consumption rate is charged, PowerShift has a higher rate for consumption in the Super Peak period and lower rates for Peak and Off-peak periods.

Making the most of it

The biggest savings come when you shift your use to the Off-peak period at a rate of 12.1295 cents per unit. It’s about 50% cheaper than the standard Synergy Home Plan® (A1) consumption charge of 25.7029 cents per unit. Of course you’ll still need to use some electricity during the Peak period, but even then you’ll be better off, at 23.7643 cents per unit. You just need to avoid using electricity in the ‘Super Peak’ period as much as possible, which is charged at a higher rate of 44.0703 cents per unit. In the end, with a little bit of careful planning it’s a possible win-win situation for you. Check out the table on the right for times and electricity charges*.

It gets better

Even the fixed PowerShift supply charge** rate (currently 43.4170 cents per day) is cheaper than the standard supply charge.

*The electricity charge is the variable charge element of your tariff based on the amount of electricity you consume.**The supply charge is the fixed charge element of your tariff which applies irrespective of how much electricity you consume.

TAKING YOUR APPLIANCES ‘OFF-PEAK’

Using PowerShift well

Once you’ve decided on PowerShift, if you want to get the most out of it, you’ll actually have to shift your electricity consumption. Of course, it’s not practical to switch your fridge off any time of day but there are other appliances that are easy to shift. You could wash your clothes first thing in the morning, run your dishwasher after 10pm and give your air con a rest during the Super Peak period. You could even have a timer fitted to your electric water heater, reticulation, your bore and pool pump; after all, they are ‘Off-peak appliances’.

Timers are your friends

Timers allow you to set your appliances to run during the cheaper Off-peak periods. Take a quick look at your existing appliances and you might be surprised to find that the washing machine you’ve been using for years actually has a timer. You can also have timers professionally installed or simply use plug-in timers. And when you buy new appliances, check that they have a built-in timer or you’ll be stuck doing things the old-fashioned way.

The PowerShift lifestyle

It’s worth giving it some careful thought before switching to PowerShift. If you’re already using most of your energy in the cheaper periods, it’s a no brainer. Perhaps your work shifts fit in well with PowerShift. Or maybe you can easily change your usage habits to take advantage of the tariffs in the cheaper periods. If you think there will be times when you’ll need to use electricity in the Super Peak period, you may end up paying more, and PowerShift might not be right for you. It’s also wise to think about how any future changes in your situation might affect your ability to shift your electricity use.

Switching to PowerShift

If you think your household could benefit from Synergy PowerShift, simply call us on 13 13 53 and we can determine if you have a compatible meter and arrange the switch for you over the phone. The prices for reprogramming your existing meter or installing a new compatible meter are listed below and will show up on your next bill after you have switched to PowerShift.

The benefits of PowerShift

If you are good at shifting your electricity use to the Off-peak period, you could save yourself quite a bit. However, if you still find yourself using energy during the Super Peak period, you could end up saving very little or even spending more. If that happens, the most important thing to remember is you can switch back at anytime, but you will need to pay a $66 meter reprogram fee.

If PowerShift isn’t working for you, just give us a call and we can switch you back to the single rate Synergy Home Plan® (A1) tariff. Call us on 13 13 53 Monday to Friday from 7am to 7pm, except public holidays. (Meter reprogram fees apply.)
