Colours shown are as close as possible to actual paint colours. Please note, due to limitations of the printing process, photographic and printed images may not represent the true colour. Always confirm

your colour choice with a Dulux Sample Pot.

• Don’t forget to consider the permanent fixtures of your home, like guttering and the rooftop, before choosing a new colour scheme for your exterior. Make sure the colours you choose don’t clash, but rather, complement existing features to create the perfect balance. Make sure to utilise Dulux’s colour services from personalised colour advice to colour chips and sample pots.

• A wall that has been properly prepared will not only make painting easier, but will help achieve a vibrant, long-lasting finish. Prior to painting, use a broom to dust the wall, followed by cleaning it with Selleys® Sugar Soap. Allow the wall to dry thoroughly before proceeding.

It’s essential to determine what the core function of your outdoor space will be when deciding on your furniture. Will this be a place to relax in, entertain at, or simply act as an entry point to your home? Let your answers guide your design choices. For example, Yasmeen and Marc wanted an entertaining space to invite friends and family to for barbeques and lunches. That meant an outdoor table paired with comfortable dining chairs, along with additional stools at hand, was essential for this space.

STEP 3: Add character with a pop of colour

Marc and Yasmeen had used neutral colours throughout their home, but after looking for inspiration on Pinterest and Dulux’s website, they decided to do something a little different by introducing Dulux® Swedish Blue to draw out the door and windows on the deck. They painted the frame door in the Weathershield® Semi Gloss paint finish to protect the timber from the weather.

Perfecting the area’s texture was essential when drawing attention to it with colour. Timber architraves were installed on either side to create symmetry.

STEP 4: Keep an eye out for the weatherBeing an outdoor DIY job, Marc and Yasmeen kept an eye on the weather forecast in order to make sure that the project could be done efficiently over one weekend. The couple painted the textured primer first thing in the morning, followed by the first coat of colour in the afternoon. To ensure ample drying time, they left the second coat for the following day along with the staining of the deck.

STEP 5: Add the finishing touchesOnce the painting phase was completed, it was time for the couple to add the finishing touches. First was the furniture, helping reinforce the deck as a space for entertaining, then came the plants, which allowed the deck to become connected to the rest of the backyard. Lastly, soft furnishings were added to give the area warmth and to compliment the blue used on the door and windows.

STEP 1: Take cues from existing featuresThe deck in question had a pre-existing pergola painted in Dulux Colorbond® Woodland Grey®. To compliment this existing feature, Marc and Yasmeen colour-matched it with Dulux® Hammer Grey for the brick wall, allowing both features to blend together.

STEP 2: Consider adding texture to hide imperfections

The brick wall itself was in poor condition, so the couple chose Dulux® Texture Paint in Fine Texture to help hide the wall’s holes and unevenness. This product is best applied with a textured roller and laid on thickly.
