dosius, founded in the mid-11th century, which became oneof the centers of Christianity in Kievan Rus and Eastern Europe.As the monks of the monastery, Kiev architects created a world-renowned architectural complex giving the building their ownidea of beauty. There are about one hundred building in its terri-

in architecture.

Glory ParkIn the middle of the Park of Eternal Glory to the Soldiers

of the Great Patriotic War there is an obelisk of Fame, 26 meters high,at the foot of which theres the tomb of the Unknown Soldier. Near theobelisk there is the eternal ame, surrounded by a bronze wreath. Parkof Eternal Glory belongs to the best upland parks of Kiev.

Candle of Remembranceon November 22, 2008 Candle of

Rememberance - a monument to victims of Holodo-mor in Ukraine - was opened. It is a 32-meter con-crete chapel, made in the form of a white candle withgold-plated ligree ame. Facets of candle are deco-rated with ornaments of the windows, reminiscent ofUkrainian embroidery. These little carved window-crosses symbolize the souls of Ukrainians who per-ished during the famine (1921-22, 1932-33, 1946-47).

St. Sophias CathedralBuilt in 1036 by order of Prince Yaro-

slav the Wise, for many years it had beena center of enlightenment, not only inKiev, but also in the nearby East Slaviclands. It was a masterpiece of architecture

Park is located between the Naberezna road and the Dnieper. Thepark territory is 11.2 hectares. Babi Yarthe tract in the

northwestern part of Kiev.Babi Yar gained the worldwide

fame as a place of mass execu-tions of civilians, mainly Jews,Gypsies, as well as Soviet sol-diers, performed by Ukrainiancollaborators and German oc-cupation forces in 1941. In to-tal, over a hundred thousandpeople were shot as evidenced by the inscription on the centralmonument. Only 29 people escaped from Babi Yar.

National Dendrology Park Soyivkafounded in 1796 by the owner of the town of Uman,

Polish magnate Stanislav Potocki, named in honour of his wifeSophia Witt-Pototskaya and presented to her on her birthday inMay 1802. Located in the northern part of Uman, Cherkasy regionof Ukraine, on the banks of the Kamenka River. More than 3323taxa (species, forms, varieties, cultivars), local and exotic trees andshrubs, including cypress, Weymouth pine, tulip tree, sycamore,ginkgo, spruce, and many others grow in the park. This park is all

reminiscent of a fairy tale.
