making a difference
Finder: Stephan & Nathalie J., Ontario, Canada
Using: ACE 150Find: “My son and I have been treasure hunting for three years now and we are really hooked,” says Nathalie. “Stephan is 19 and has Autism. He has always been a very happy child and finding something he enjoyed was a a big problem. I bought him an ACE
150 and presto, a child who wanted to go outside everyday!” Nathalie says her son is excited even when he finds modern trash. They were both eager to get out hunting again after the long Ontario winter. She says that detecting with her son is making a big difference in both of their lives and is also a very great learning experience. Happy hunting to you both!
Some of the coins and jewelry found by Stephan and his mother.
Treasures saved from The ashes
Dana H. (seen at far left) used his AT Pro to recover a family’s lost treasures after a home fire. Among his finds was this tin of old coins, including silver dollars.
Dana H. of Carmel, CA came to the aid of some friends whose home burned to the ground in a December 2013 forest fire. The couple asked him to bring his metal detector to help search the ashes and rubble for their heirloom silverware and an old coin collection. Dana first put his AT Pro in Custom Pro Mode with iron discrim at 40 and all but the last five notches taken out. “I located the silverware piece by piece and then located an old tin containing some old silver dollars and various other coins,” he said. He then switched to the Coins Mode with iron disc on 40 to recover several pieces of jewelry and a whiskey flask. “The fire may have taken their home and possessions,” he said, “but the AT Pro ensured the family heirlooms would continue on their journey to future generations.”

Finder: Scott and Martha H., Costa Mesa, CAUsing: ACE 250Find: Martha and her husband Scott were hunting in an old park when she began digging pieces to an old brace-let. The links were caked with dirt and looked like they had been in the ground for quite a while. After getting home, they realized that she had managed to dig up all the pieces to the bracelet. “With a little re-
search, we discovered that the bracelet was a vintage onyx and Mexican sil-ver piece made by a fairly renown art-ist named J. Gomes,” Scott said. “So I disassembled each link, polished them up and reassembled the bracelet into a beautiful restored piece. It is our most exciting find to date!”
The maker’s mark on the back of this silver bracelet can be seen in the closer view at right. At left is the complete bracelet Scott cleaned and restored for his wife.
Finder: Scott R., Hornbeak, TNUsing: AT ProFind: Scott believes the most cher-ished finds are “the ones that bring hap-piness to friends and family.” He created considerable happiness for his sister-in-law when he searched for and found a ring that had been hand-made by her father. It was a half-finished one, made from a silver quarter. “When I saw the tears immediately well up in her eyes, Iknew that this was the ultimate treasure we seek as detectorists,” he said.

Finder: David G., Enfield, CTUsing: ACE 250Find: This is the smile of a happy child that greeted David after he did a good deed with his detector. He spotted the child crying with her mother as he got out of his car in the CVS parking lot. She had lost her pendant necklace in the snow. David went home to get his ACE 250 and then spent about an hour searching through the snow before he was able to detect the pendant. When he pulled up to the family’s home the next day to drop it off, he recalled, “All I saw was this little girl with a huge smile on her face. Come
to find out, her father is deployed overseas and bought it for her for her birthday so it was a very specialnecklace to her.”

At left, Beau poses with 16 artillery shells recovered from one river location. The lower left photo is of another fantastic river hunt where he found four U.S. box plates, two complete Burnside cartridges, a U.S. bit boss, a pocket knife, a musket butt plate, a colonial shoe buckle, and many Civil War minié balls. Finder: David B., Grand Rapids, MIUsing: AT ProFind: The following story is shared directly as submitted by David.
“This hunt took place on August 22, 2013 and made me proud to be an own-er of an AT Pro. The action took place in Portland, Michigan. “Dick L. retired from Oldsmobile af-ter working there for 39 years. He was very proud of the ring Oldsmobile gave him to commemorate his service, and wore it every day for many years. One day in the summer of 2012 Dick spent the day doing yard work at his church and his home nearby. At the end of the day Dick was devastated to realize his ring was missing. There was a lot of searching, but no results. “Dick’s granddaughter, Lindsey, wanted to make it right for him, so she started searching for another retirement ring just like the lost one. When she found one, she surprised the 83-year-old with it at a family gathering. As he described it, Lindsey’s thoughtfulness and the sight of a twin to his ring left him speechless for the first time in his life. “A TV reporter from her town heard the story about the ring and created one of those ‘feel-good’ stories we don’t see often enough on TV. “This is where we came in. We saw the story on Fox-17, and decided we needed to try to find that original ring, Dick’s ring, for him. We started by call-ing Fox-17 to find out how to contact

Dick. The news producer we talked to was so excited about the possibility of finding it that she immediately called Dick. He agreed to meet with us. “On August 22, 2013, my detecting friend, Gregg, and I drove the 35 miles to Portland to meet with Dick. He took us over to the church where he had been working that day a year ago. He explained how he took a dirt pile and spread it out, filling in holes. Then he sifted some of the leftover dirt to take home to do the same to his lawn. “Gregg and I spent more than 3 fruitless hours digging, raking and de-tecting at the church before deciding to take a look at Dick’s front yard. In that very green and well manicured area not larger than 25 by 50 feet, we started a grid search. In less than 5 minutes I found the ring, undamaged, sitting in a small divot covered by some dead grass.
That it escaped the eyes of its owner, not to mention a year’s worth of mowing, was amazing to all of us. “Granddaughter Lindsey accompa-nied us on both site searches and be-came a little teary eyed after the find, knowing her grandfather was reunited with his original ring. Dick himself was again speechless for a moment. Lindsey called the TV station and they immedi-ately sent out a reporter and cameraman for the follow-up story. It became a nice lawn party with Lindsey, Dick’s wife, their daughter and several neighbors who wondered about all the commo-tion and TV reporters at Dick’s house. “I used my AT Pro with a 5 x 8 coil and a Garrett pinpointer to zero in on the target—and to make a lot of people happy that day.”
