Key challenges

Spikes in knife crime and serious violence

The Trident Gang Crime Command has responsibility for tackling gang violence and the prevention and investigation of all shootings in London, regardless of the victim’s background. The Trident ‘Time to Talk’ Report dated December 2011 noted that (statistics relate 2010-2011):

o 51% of non fatally shot victims were unwilling to assist in Trident investigations with evidence

o For the year 2010 to 2011 33% of all shooting victims were from the 15-19 age group (second highest against 20-24 year olds at 35%)

The statistic on non-cooperation is further emphasised:

o Of the 51% of non fatal shooting victims unwilling to support Trident with evidence, of these 78% were aged 15-24 years and 83% were black

o During the same period 70% of shooting victims were under the age of 25 and 76% were black

Key challenges

Reducing reoffending rates for young people

Challenges in the complexity of cases

Evaluating interventions to assess quality/ impact and cost

Financial considerations regarding remands and financial burden on local authorities

Exploring sound alternatives to remand

Resettlement of gang members for safety

Pathways out of offending being more difficult now
