For Woods Day Care/Pre-School, $105 was raised through

Wabash Valley Gives to add an educational globe for the pre-school classroom. The school staff expressed that they are honored and thankful for the monetary donations that were given

to provide the globe for the children in Room 6.

Patricia Jones, our spring semester Social Media and Marketing intern, has worked with the Foundation to develop and implement more visibility and traffic to our social media accounts, as well as adopt new tools and alternative methods for our social marketing strategy. Patricia is a senior at Saint Mary-of-the-Woods College and will graduate this spring with a Bachelor’s degree in advertising and a minor in professional communications. She and a team from SMWC won Nationals last summer as part of a business internship through the college and presented in Orlando, Florida, at the Phi Beta Lambda Conference. Since then she has become the public relations officer for the chapter at SMWC. She looks forward to developing her skills and taking on leadership roles within the community.

Katelynn Moats has been our Administrative Support intern during the spring semester. She has assisted the Foundation on projects relating to our 20th Anniversary Annual Report and with

scholarship-related items. She is a senior at Indiana State University majoring in elementary education with minor concentrations in Spanish, English as a new language, elementary reading, middle school mathematics and civic leadership. She has had previous experience as an intern for the ISU Foundation. As a Terre Haute native, Katelynn is passionate about serving her community and co-created the “Go Figure” program at the Terre Haute Children’s Museum for third, fourth and fifth grade students. At ISU, she is a four-year member of the Sycamore Ambassadors, the university’s official student representatives, and served as president for two years. She also served in the Bayh College of Education Dean’s Office and Center for Mathematics Education.

Patricia and Katelynn’s internships are made possible through the Lilly Endowment Community Foundation Intern Initiative.

Meet Our Spring Lilly Initiative Interns

The Wabash Valley Community Foundation recently received notification that it has met the nation’s highest philanthropic standards for operational quality, integrity and accountability. The notice comes from the Council on Foundations, a national professional association based in Washington, D.C.

“This is similar to the Good Housekeeping Seal for community foundations,” said Jeff Clarke, Council on Foundations interim president and chief executive officer. “It says that the Wabash Valley Community Foundation has demonstrated a commitment to operational quality, integrity and accountability.”

Executive Director Beth Tevlin said, “This is critically important to our donors. When people make a charitable bequest, establish a fund or set up an annuity, they are putting their trust in us. They are counting on us to manage the investment wisely and honor their charitable wishes. The National Standards confirmation says our house is in order.”

The National Standards for U.S. Community Foundations Program requires community foundations to document their policies for donor services, investments, grant making and administration. With over 500 community foundations currently confirmed in compliance nationwide, the program is designed to provide quality assurance to donors, as well as to their legal and financial advisors.

Sullivan County Community Foundation’s 2012 Volunteers of the Year have prepared and delivered rain barrels for the “Art and Conservation” project, created display boards to use at local 4-H and Ag Day events, distributed tree seedlings, built bluebird houses, actively encouraged recycling, and spent days with eighth graders on a sandbar on the Wabash River. Tim and Linda Gregory were recognized with this year’s Sullivan County Community Foundation’s Volunteer of the Year Award for their work with the Sullivan County Soil and Water Conservation District. Inspired by their love of all things outdoors, Tim and Linda have volunteered together for the District for the last four years. The pair is always willing to do anything that is asked of them by greeting tasks with enthusiastic energy and often providing suggestions of projects that can enhance conservation.

Tim and Linda also share a love for Indiana history and spend time working on the Eighth Grade Wabash River Expedition. As a presenter for the historic section of the expedition curriculum,

Tim dresses in period clothing, camps for three to four days on the sandbar and hunts his own food while there. Linda encourages recycling and always makes sure the sandbar is left in better

condition than it was found on the first day of the trip. In recognition of the Gregorys’ work, the Sullivan County Community Foundation awarded the Sullivan County Soil and Water Conservation District a $2,500 grant to assist in operational costs.

In order to qualify for the Sullivan County Volunteer of the Year award, candidates had to be Sullivan County residents and had to have been nominated by their respective nonprofit, government, school or church organzation. Each nomination letter was then reviewed by three judges who reside outside of Sullivan County and were not affiliated with any of the nominees.

There were five other distinquished individuals nominated for the award including, Alice Cox, First Baptist Church; Sonner Faught, Sullivan County Waste Management District; Carol Gaskins, Humane Society of Sullivan County; Bob Tomey, Gill Township Alumni Association; and Molly Woods, The Luke House.
