8 The Florida Center for the Blind (FCB) is making an impact throughout the community. Entitled the “hidden gem of Ocala” by the Citizen, FCB has begun to create a buzz as a vital community partner, providing invaluable services and resources to individuals who are blind and visually impaired. BRINGING SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY FCB provided a two-part Low Vision class for On Top of the World’s (OTOW) Master the Possibilities series. This class, which is normally held at the Center’s facilities, was brought to the Southwest side of Ocala to instruct individuals with low vision issues on tips and tricks to maintain their independence. Many participants stated that it was extremely beneficial and made a difference in their lives. During this two-day class, and other outreach events, FCB has been asked to provide a “mobile store” in order for participants to purchase the adaptive aids and devices that are demonstrated. The requests continue to grow as we bring Adaptations Low Vision Supply Store directly to civic groups, classes and retirement communities. Some examples of popular products are hand-held magnifiers and sun filter glasses, both of which help individuals utilize their remaining usable vision. These products are fitted to each individual and make a substantial difference for people with low vision. There is a vast variety of low visions aids available through Adaptations, so if a group is interested in FCB providing a Mobile Store, please call the main office. FCB CLIENTS PLAYING AN ACTIVE ROLE FCB’s clients and alumni have continued to play an active role in community awareness through the EyeCAN group. The group continues to take field trips in the community, educating our community about the White Cane Laws and proper etiquette for their population. This group has also become involved in giving back to their community by starting a canned food drive for the Salvation Army called, “Let’s Can Hunger!” LIONS ARE ROARING With all of the good work FCB is accomplishing and new programming being added to FCB, many civic clubs have taken notice. FCB has received generous donations from both the Ocala and Ft. King Lions Clubs that have made a great impact on FCB’s new Children’s Program. (Continued on page 9) Making an Impact! The Florida Center for the Blind (FCB) is making an impact throughout the community. Entitled the “hidden gem of Ocala” by the Citizen, FCB has begun to create a buzz as a vital community partner, providing invaluable services and resources to individuals who are blind and visually impaired. BRINGING SERVICES TO THE COMMUNITY

FCB provided a two-part Low Vision class for On Top of the World’s (OTOW) Master the Possibilities series.

FCB CLIENTS PLAYING AN ACTIVE ROLE

FCB’s clients and alumni have continued to play an active role in community awareness through the EyeCAN group. The group continues to take field trips in the community, educating our community about the White Cane Laws and proper etiquette for their population. This group has also become involved in giving back to their community by starting a canned food drive for the Salvation Army called, “Let’s Can Hunger!” LIONS ARE ROARING

With all of the good work FCB is accomplishing and new programming being added to FCB, many civic clubs have taken notice. FCB has received generous donations from both the Ocala and Ft. King Lions Clubs that have made a great impact on FCB’s new Children’s Program. (Continued on page 9)

Making an Impact (continued from page 6)

In addition, FCB is being honored at the Ocala Lions Club 90th Anniversary celebration taking place on May 7th. Their support has allowed FCB to create an age-appropriate learning environment and purchase iPads for instructing the children ages 5-13.

CONTINUING TO SHOW SUPPORT

With outreach activities supporting FCB, both the OTOW and State Road 200 Lions Clubs have involved FCB in their events and meetings. We even receive support from Lions Clubs located outside of Ocala! We continue to thank the Lions for their support in our organization.

FCB continues to provide outreach activities throughout our eight county service area. If your business or civic club is looking for a guest speaker, FCB would love to share its mission and work with you! Call the main office to schedule a time that works best for your group.
