MAKING MEMORIES ONESUMMER AT A TIMEOvernight, day or specialty camps at the Y share one thing:they’re about discovery. Kids have the opportunity to explorenature, find new talents, try new activities, gain independence, and make lasting friendships and memories. And, of course, it’sfun too.

Summer also is a time to discover how to become and stayactive to develop healthy habits for a lifetime. The benefits are far greater than just physical health. Whether it’s gaining confidence or connecting with others, joining the Y is aboutbuilding the whole person, from the inside out.

HELPING CHILDREN THRIVE

At the YMCA, we partner with the Search Instituteto help adults connect with children and youth ina positive way to help young people thrive.Research shows that there are essential elementsthat are crucial to their healthy development. Wecall these elements “Developmental Assets”—thepositive experiences, relationships, opportunitiesand values that young people need to thrive. Weintegrate these into all our programs and services. The essential building blocks for young people’ssuccessful growth and development fall into eightcategories:

1. Support—Young people need to experiencesupport, care, and love from their families andmany others. They need organizations and institutions that provide positive, supportive environments.

2. Empowerment—Young people need to be valued by their community and have opportunitiesto contribute to others. For this to occur, theymust be safe and feel secure.

3. Boundaries and Expectations—Young peopleneed to know what is expected of them andwhether activities and behaviors are “in bounds”or “out of bounds.”

4. Constructive Use of Time—Young people needconstructive, enriching opportunities for growththrough creative activities, youth programs, congregational involvement, and quality time at home.

5. Commitment to Learning—Young people needto develop a lifelong commitment to educationand training.

6. Positive Values—Young people need to develop strong values that guide their choices.

7. Social Competencies—Young people needskills and competencies that equip them to make positive choices, build relationships, and succeedin life.

8. Positive Identity—Young people need a strongsense of their own power, purpose, worth, andpromise.

You have the power to change lives. By buildingassets with Torrance-South Bay YMCA’s childrenand youth, you can help them to become competent, caring, and responsible adults.

34

I heard some buses don’t have seat belts. Is that right?Yes, that is correct. Don’t worry, according to theNational Safety Council in 1996, school buses are172 times safer than your family automobile.

How much instruction will my child receive in hisor her sports camp? Please remember, you are signing up your child toattend a sports camp, not a sports clinic. Oursports camps are designed to teach self-esteem,leadership, teamwork and character values. Theywill execute drills, learn new techniques, playgames and practice the sport. Always remember, ifyour child would like more intensive instruction, encourage him or her to ask the camp staff!

What camps have additional waivers? How do I get them?Every summer, a handful of our specialty campsrequire additional waivers. The following campsrequire an additional waiver: Fit Kids Gymnastics,Rock Climbing, Horsemanship, Self-defense, andIce Skating. You should receive the waiver at thetime of registration and/or confirmation. If youneed one sent or faxed to you, please contact thecamp/child care office.

The camp I want to register for is already full. Is there a waitlist? We do not have a waitlist. When a camp fills up,the registration staff begins an interest list. Allpeople on the interest list are called when a spacebecomes available. The first to respond will beenrolled.

I only need to send my child to camp a few daysa week. Will you prorate fees?We believe that a true camp experience is a week-long experience. Unfortunately, we cannotprorate fees because we pay our vendors andassign staff for the week.

Will sunscreen be applied to my child throughout the day?Of course! We count on parents to apply sunscreen before children come to camp. We applysunscreen at snack time, lunchtime and in theearly afternoon. Children in 4th grade and upapply their own sunscreen.

Each child needs to bring a supply of sunscreen forthemselves. If you do not want sunscreen appliedto your children or would like a special type ofsunscreen, please send a note to your child’scamp staff on Monday. If your child burns easily,he or she may need to bring some additional protective gear like a hat, t-shirt or rash guardthat he or she can wear while participating in outdoor activities.

What should my child bring to day camp?• Sack lunch with non-perishable items only (soft

lunch coolers work better than paper bags).• Swimsuit and towel (varies depending on

specific camp’s weekly schedule).• Sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher and other

protection from the sun (hat, visor, etc.).• Please label all belongings. The YMCA is not

responsible for lost or stolen articles.• Please do not send valuable or expensive items

to camp.• The YMCA covers all expenses during the camp

day; spending money is not required unlessspecified by camp director.

Why do you need a credit card?Unfortunately, in the past we have occasionallyfound that some members’ checks have bounced, children have caused some damage to the facili-ties or there have been instances which haverequired the YMCA to recover its costs. We nowrequire a credit card. Most of the time it will notbe charged unless directed by the member, byselecting the weekly charge box.
