from the presidentone of the key components of public media is thoughtful discussion on substantive social and civic issues. For the past two decades, KCTS 9 has produced Ask the Governor with just this purpose in mind. The very first Ask the Governor show aired on February 3, 1993, with Gov. Mike Lowry. That first program and many others are available on demand at KCTS9.org. We’re proud to continue this tradition in November with the newest Ask the Governor, live from Kane Hall at the University of Washington. The program will be live-streamed on KCTS9.org and broadcast on public media stations throughout the state of Washington.

We’ve been tackling critical issues facing our region with the kind of depth and analysis found only on public media. We’re honored that PBS NewsHour has featured several KCTS 9 segments, expanding our reach to a national audience. Our community events have been filled to capacity, with topics ranging from the latest breakthroughs in cancer treatment to our recent town hall discussion about race, justice and democracy.

It’s your support and dedication that allow us to produce compelling public affairs, educational and arts programming. Thank you!

We adapted the heavenly au gratin potatoes from Christopher’s on Whidbey and got a unanimous thumbs-up! The calorie horse left the barn, but you may substitute half-and-half for the cream to reduce the damage. Any type of potato will work; the secret is slicing them very thinly. And for something sweet, don’t miss KCTS 9 Cooks: Just Desserts Saturday, 11/7, at 11:00 a.m.

Smoked Cheddar Cheese Potatoes au Gratin SERVES 4–6 3 large russet potatoes, skin on, scrubbed

and dried off1 B/c red onions, thinly sliced 4 garlic cloves, minced 4 ounces grated smoked cheddar cheese 16 ounces heavy cream 2 teaspoons freshly grated nutmeg salt and freshly ground black pepper 1 teaspoon dried thyme

Thinly slice the potatoes lengthwise. (If you’re using a mandoline, set it just over the B⁄i-inch mark.) Put the slices into a large bowl. Add the sliced onions, minced garlic and smoked cheddar. Toss to mix, add cream, and toss again. Season the mixture to taste with nutmeg, salt, pepper and thyme, and mix well. Make sure the cheese and seasonings are distributed evenly and the potatoes are coated with cream.

Transfer the mixture to an 8-inch square glass baking dish or any ovenproof dish that will hold the potatoes in a layer 2V to 3 inches thick. Press the potatoes down evenly, making sure everything is covered with cream. Bake at 400 degrees for about 1 hour, or until fork-tender.
