    stand alone in the arts of the New World,and are foni])aral)le with any of the archaicloom-work of the ( )rient. lUit the old Peru-vians, thouf^h past-masters in the art ofweaving, were not alone in their vocation.The old Xahuas, the Mayas, and other trihesof Mexico and Central America, well knewthe possibilities of the loom, and from theevidence at hand we are safe in sayinjj thatthe i)rehistoric sedentary people of our ownSouthwest were also textile-makers of nosmall merit. Ikit of their descendants wecannot say as much, for the modern I'uehloIndians weave only the most simjilc form ofblankets.

    While the Pueblo })eoiile lived in j»eace ina land of comparative ])lenty, their sestheticarts improved ; but when the bands ofApaches and Navajos swept down uponthem there came a change, and a deca-dence began which was increased by theSpanish conquest and afterward by the suc-cessive inroads of white adventurers amisettlers. The Navajos were hunters who

    bors, and when later the Spaniards ajtpearedand brought new game, these nomads helpedthem.selves most freely, especially to thesheej). The Navajo seemed naturally adajitedto the life of a herdsman, and the horse atonce became his friend and ally, while tlu'increasing Hocks of sheej», at first stolenfor food, were can*d for by the .squaws.Now, when the Navajo saw the wonderfultrappings of I'oronado's army, he was, nodoubt, impressed by the fabrics worn bythe soldiers and the blankets in which thi-yslejit at night, and began to realize th«' fullimi)ort of the work already known to him.At all ('Vents, he conceived a desire toweave, and this he did, utilizing native im-plements and foreign material. The loom-sticks he either borrowed or copied fromthe Pueblos, and then by ravelling a ver>'hard-twist Sjianish cloth, known as *' va-yeta, he rewove it and made the   Serape.\avaho of the old traders and explorers.It seems quite evident that the Navajo.^learned their art from the Pueblos, butfrom the evidence obtainable they did notput their knowledge to any use until afterI he con(}uest ; then a great many years must

Once be-gun, however, it ])resented unlimited ])ossi-bilities, and the (juick-witted nomad seemedto grasj) the situation. He worked ar-duously, and though he appro])riated theSpaniard's sheep, the only tools that he bor-rowed from him were the shears and wool-cards. With the old primitive distaff andPueblo loom he spun links of wool, forminga chain of such exceeding length that, whenIns country was absorbed by our greatUnion, it reached the seat of government,and thousands of sheep were added to hisflocks through the generosity of his fosterfathers. This assistance was well directed,and the result is self-evident, for there arefew who have not seen or at least heard ofa Navajo blanket.

    I>ut how many realize the amount of laborinvolved in prejjaring the crude wool as itis taken from the sheep, and converting itinto a twine that is thin enough and strongenough for the warp-strands of their work ?Who but the initiated, in looking upon theirbeautiful designs, are impressed with the

    fact that they are viewing an evidence ofindividuality ? It is not machine work,where each thread is counted by a comi)li-cated mechanism, and where each design ismathematically perfect ; the forms and fig-ures are evolved while the work is in prog-ress, and drawn in their entirety upon thekaleidoscopic mirror of the mind alone. Ifit is new to you, my reader, you would, nodoubt, like to see the squaw as she laborsfaithfully from the initial stages of thework until it is ready to adorn her ownhogan or be sold to a neighboring Pueblo ortrader. Let us journey, then, westward toa broad ancient waterway in northwesternNew Mexico, known as Chaco Caiion, andfind there the Navajo at home; not on thereservation set apart for him by the authori-ties in Washington, but in one of the graz-ing areas that he has preempted for theimmediate needs of his hungry flocks.We have not far to go to see the blanket-makers, for some of the older ones areusually near camp; not begging, but ear-nestly hoping that they will be invited topartake of what is left after the meal—cup of coffee at least, which is to them not

    sheep. The animal is caught, thrown uponits side and hog-tied ; that is, the four legsare crossed and bound securely with a pieceof wool-rope, and then, with an occasionalbleat of protest, the sheep is relieved of itscoat. The great shearing-time is in thespring and fall, but sheep are sometimessheared during the summer months.

    Occasionally the fleece is taken off in onelarge piece, as shown in the illustration onpage 87, and the rough parts and ends areremoved and put aside for the coarser saddle-pads, experience havingtaught them that it isnot policy to utilize the second-grade mate-rial in the construction of a good blanket.The white wool is not clean, as a rule, anddoes not stand out as it should when com-bined with black and other dark colors. Thescarcity of water and the absence of sheeji-dips are, of course, responsible for this stateof aff^airs; nevertheless w^e have succeededin inducing a few of the squaws to wash thewool, both black and white, and the portionthat is to be dyed as well as that which isto be utilized in the natural state. Whenwashed the wool is placed on the grease-wood bushes to dry, after which it is ready

    Most of the Navajo sheep are white, butl^lack ones are not uncommon. This givesthe Indian two natural contrasts in color,with numerous shades of black and brown,while the wool of some sheep assumes al-most- a blue color. Occasionally all of theseproducts are used in their natural state, butthe white wool is the only one that is usedto any extent without being dyed. Theblack wool is never a jet black ; it has ared tinge, and is seldom used without beingtreated with   El-gee' -ba-toh, their na-tive black dye, or the now prevalent anilinedye of the trader.

    The native dyes of the Navajos are few.The only one they were using in their wool-work when I first saw them, in 1896, wasl)lack, and even this was fast being replacedby the dyes from stores. There is a yellow-green dye that is used occasionally ; it ismade from the flowering tops of the rabbit-weed (Bigelovia gravcolcns). After theflower-stalks have boiled for several hoursa native alum is added, the use of the lat-ter being that of a mordant. It gives avariety of shades, and is really a good dyefor wool-work. Their native red dye is still

But couldthat lifeless form be given speech, it couldtell of days of adverse fortune vi^hen thesandstorms held mad revel, and the house-hold goods were piled about it to keep itclean, while its owner sought the friendlyshelter of a nc^ighboring rock. Or it mightspeak of nights when all was dark, whenwaters dashed in torrents through the roof-less hogan, causing scpiaws to bare theirshoulders to the elements while their blan-kets shielded it from harm. How many in-stances of suffering might be cited—patientcripples, weak and emaciated men and wom-en, feeble with age and exj)osure, sul»sisting• III corn and water, watching day by day theprogress of the blanket whose coni])letinnwill mean coffee and a few of the luxiiri( sthat \v(^ would class as nin-essities Thenthe l)Ianket is finished and the journey to the

    experience what she should receive for herwork, and therefore demands a certainamount as her just dues. The trader, hard-hearted and grasping, as a rule, takesfrom his money-pouch perhaps one-half theblanket's value in silver and throws it uponthe counter. The squaw realizes the injus-tice of the act, but also knows full well thatthere is but one alternative, and that is toride perhaps a score of miles to the nextstore, and that, too, without the slightestprospect of better treatment when shereaches it. Then comes the thought of theanxious ones at home, and she realizes howgreat will be the disappointment if she re-turns empty-handed. Long she ponders,then conquering the ever-increasing angerthat threatens to gain the mastery over rea-son, she takes the proffered coin. She isable to buy but half the goods that she hadhoped to get, and the trader realizes fromone hundred to three hundred per cent,on each article that she buys.

    Thus it has been for many years, but Iam glad that I am able to say that a newregime has begun which promises to givethe Navajo not only an honest equivalentfor his work, but also a helping hand ineach and all of the various ways that tendto elevate and cause a betterment in hisphysical and financial status.On page 43 we have a reproduction of oneof the purely primitive blankets. It is asmall rug made entirely from natural nativeproducts. In this form of blanket we havethe result of recent training. The woolhas been washed and the natural colors havebeen utilized ; these consist of a black anda yellow-brown, forming a design on a whitebackground. It not only does away withthe dyes of the white man, but the effect isl)loasing to the eye, for the colors are verysoft and harmonize perfectly. The blanketunder consideration was made for the writer(luring the summer of 18i)8, when the workof the Hyde Exploring Expedition amongthe Navajos, begun in 1896, was bearing-fruit. But the reclaiming of the Indian'sart proved to be a task that necessitateduntiring labor with results hardly sufficientto rei)ay one for the time and money ex-jx'nded. Unforeseen obstacles were con-stantly encountered. The Indian had l)eeiimoving in a certain groove for years, anddid not ai»i)reciate innovations that tendedto disru])t the work that had been brought

At first he gave them warp, aswe have seen ; then, to make the jiroductstill more modernized, he furnished themwith a ready-made woof.
