Making Room…
Make Room for Rest Hebrews 4:1-11
1. What words, thoughts, feelings come to mind when you think of ‘rest’?
2. Why do you think life is so busy? Why do we find it so difficult to slow
down or rest? What are we/people striving for? Share experiences.
3. Read Hebrews 4:1-11
4. V1&2 (See also 3:16-18) What is the good news that the Israelites
received and what is the good news we have received? Why did the
Israelites miss out on the promised rest? ‘The promise to enter God’s
rest still stands’ what does this mean for us?
5. Read Genesis 2:1-3. Why do you think God rested on the seventh day?
What is the significance of the seventh day being made holy? How
does this help to explain the Sabbath rest spoken of in Hebrews
4:9&10?
6. Share briefly what it means for you to know peace with God and how
the reality of living in God’s rest now impacts (or not) your daily life.
How is or could the knowledge that one day we will fully enter God’s
rest be reflected in your life now?
7. Have a look at Exodus 20:8 and Exodus 31:12-17. Discuss God’s
purpose for requiring a day of rest from work. How can we order our
lives to reflect keeping the Sabbath today? How do we avoid legalism or
on the other hand neglect?
8. Jesus shows us what it means to truly live a life free from stress and
striving. Read together Matthew 11:28-30 (in the Message version if
possible) and spend some time praying for each other to enjoy and not
miss out on God’s rest.
