Making Steel
c. 1900
Cynhyrchu Dur
c. 1900
Brymbo’s first steel rolling mill started work in August 1885. One month later the first
finished steel was delivered to the Alyn Tinplate Co. in Mold. The mill did not always run
smoothly: in 1886 the throttle jammed causing the engine in the mill to explode killing three
men and injuring three others.
Dechreuodd melin rholio dur gyntaf Brymbo weithio ym mis Awst 1885. Mis yn
ddiweddarach dosbarthwyd y dur gorffenedig cyntaf i Alyn Tinplate Co. yn Yr Wyddgrug.
Nid oedd y felin bob amser yn gweithio’n esmwyth: yn 1886 gwnaeth y sbardun lynu gan
achosi i beiriant y felin chwythu gan ladd tri o ddynion ac anafu tri arall.

Chemists analyze the molten metal.
When they judge the molten metal
has the right ingredients, it is known
as steel. Steel is a special kind of iron.
Iron contains high amounts of carbon.
Steel does not. The foreman orders his
men to tap the furnace. They tap off the
molten steel into a ladle. The ‘teemer’
uses the ladle to fill special moulds to
make ingots of steel.
Cemegwyr yn dadansoddi’r metel
toddedig. Pan fyddant yn profi’r metel
toddedig am y cynhwysion cywir, fei
adnabyddir fel dur. Mae gan ddur fath
arbennig o haearn. Mae gan haearn
lawer iawn o garbon. Nid oes gan
ddur. Mae’r fforman yn gorchymyn
i’w ddynion dapio’r ffwrnais. Byddant
yn tapio’r dur toddedig i mewn i lwy.
Mae’r tywalltwr yn defnyddio’r llwy
i lenwi mowldiau arbennig i wneud
ingotau dur.
The ingots arrive on wagons at the
rolling mill. Furnace men place each
ingot in the reheating furnace. The
ingots have to be hot enough to go
through the rolling mill. The men
remove the ingots from the furnace
before they melt. They are now ready
to be rolled.
Mae’r ingotau yn cyrraedd y wagenni
ger y felin rholio. Bydd dynion y
ffwrnais yn gosod pob ingot yn y
ffwrnais ail-wresogi. Mae’n rhaid i’r
ingotau fod yn boeth i fynd trwy’r felin
rholio. Bydd y dynion yn tynnu’r ingotau
o’r ffwrnais cyn y byddant yn toddi. Yn
awr maent yn barod i’w rholio.
Take the ingots over to the cogging mill. The mill will slowly squeeze
or reduce each ingot into a bloom. Take each bloom to the roughing
mill. Keep passing the bloom backwards and forwards through this mill.
Gradually the mill will shape the bloom to the required size of billet.
Finally complete the process by putting the bloom through the
finishing mill. Cut the bloom into billets (lengths) according to the
customer’s wishes.
Mynd â’r ingotau i’r felin ddechreuol. Bydd y felin yn gwasgu neu’n
lleihau bob ingot i wneud bl wm. Bydd pob bl wm yn mynd i’r felin fras.
Bydd y bl wm yn symud yn ôl ac ymlaen drwy’r felin. Yn raddol bydd y
felin yn siapio’r bl wm i ba bynnag faint biled sydd ei angen. I orffen y
broses, rhaid torri’r bl wm drwy ei roi yn y felin orffennu. Torri’r bl wm i’r
hyd cywir yn ôl gofynion y cwsmer.
