MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION ABOUT KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY - WHO NEEDS IT?
‘No biggie!’ is the general response most of us have
when that first bout of knee pain hits us. A little
exercise, pain balm, a hot water bag and we are
back to our normal lives.
Well to be honest, no one likes his or her daily
lifestyle to be hampered by a little knee pain. It is
only when our daily routine is disrupted, and the
knee pain starts governing our lifestyle, do we finally
turn our attention to it. Share this Ebook

MAKING THE RIGHT DECISION ABOUT KNEE REPLACEMENT SURGERY - WHO NEEDS IT?
1Akeem Hamid, a 76 year old patient underwent surgery only when he
could not bend his knees to pray. The pain came in the way of his
devotion and he decided to put an end to it
2Then there is Lloyd Emmanuel, 62 years old, tennis pro from NYC. Llyod has been playing
competitively for more than 50 years. When the pain started in his knee, he was asked by his
doctors to slow down. But turning a blind eye, he continued playing all out, until the pain
boomed into an ugly monster, which he had to finally consider seriously. The result was a
total knee replacement surgery.
3
Racheal Nwaigwe’s story is a classic example of why you should undergo a knee
replacement surgery: to end the suffering. Her pain began at the tender age of four and
after battling pain, fatigue and stiffness for a long period of 40 years; Racheal underwent a
bilateral knee replacement to deal with her rheumatoid arthritis.

So in which category do you lie? Are you one of those who have
been suffering for some time now like Racheal? Or like Llyod you are
ignoring the situation till you are forced to face it? Or maybe like
Akeem, you will address this pain only when everyday activities like
your prayers are disrupted? The question we are trying to help you
answer is:
Do You Need a Knee Replacement

CHAPTER 1
UNDERSTANDING THE PAIN
Before you consider surgery, it is important that you understand
what is happening in your knee and why you feel the pain:
The knee joint is made up of three bones primarily,
the tibia (shin bone), the femur (thigh bone) and the
patella (knee cap). These bones are held together
with a connective tissue called cartilage
With elastic, rubber like properties, the cartilage
allows these bones to smoothly move over one
another when there is knee movement and serves as
a cushion.
1
2
The body is unable to
heal the damaged
cartilage and in due
time the health of the
cartilage deteriorates
further. The outcome is
that all treatments to
contain the pain fail
after a point and the
person experiences
more pain, with the
movement of the limbs
being increasingly
hindered.
There may also be an increase in the friction with the
growth of bone tissue called spurs. This friction causes
inflammation, pain and results in stiffness and
decreased movement of the knee joint.
In some cases the person suffers from an
autoimmune disease called rheumatoid
arthritis, which leads to the damage to the
cartilage.
Damage to the cartilage, decreases the gap between
these bones causing them to rub against each other.
The damage to the cartilage may be due to the normal
wear and tear (osteoarthritis) that occurs as a person
Progresses in age. It may also be due to a knee
injury or accident.

Once you begin to get knee pain, treatment is aimed
at containing the pain and slowing down the
progressive damage to the cartilage. But if you have
already advanced to a stage where the pain is
constant and your mobility highly restricted then it
may be time for you to consider a knee
replacement surgery.

If you are suffering from osteoarthritis or rheumatoid
arthritis, you are a likely candidate for a knee
replacement procedure . However, there are many
factors which surgeons consider before suggesting
surgery for a patient:
Patient symptoms form a vital part of the
doctor’s decision while considering surgery.
Knee pain while walking, climbing stairs,
standing, and even when the knee is rested
are important indicators that the patient
should be considered for surgery.

A doctor will most likely give you anti inflammatory drugs, suggest
physical therapy, and ask you to apply ice packs and use
compressive bandages. In advanced cases, doctors may also
administer hyaluronic acid and other injections which will decrease
the pain and improve the movement of the knee joint. After all this,
if you still experience pain, and your symptoms persist, you may be
advised to consider surgery.

Typically, arthritic patients in their sixties were considered eligible
candidates for knee replacement surgery. However, given the fact that
knee replacement prostheses have a life of approximately 15 years,
patients in their forties are also increasingly opting for knee replacement
surgery. The need to maintain flexibility and agility in their productive
phase of life is a factor that prompts this decision.
Many youngsters, who have suffered injuries to the knees, like
sportspersons and those who have been in an unfortunate accident,
are also among those who have successfully undergone a knee
replacement and returned back to an active lifestyle.

also advised for those with
metastatic cancer related to the
knees, and those with congenital
defects like knock- knees and
bowed legs.

Everybody fears a surgery, no matter what the surgical procedure.
An important fact that you should realize is that, doctors
themselves resort to surgery only if absolutely needed. Their aim
remains to provide a patient with less invasive and non surgical
treatment for as long as they can. So when a medical practitioner
advises you to undergo a knee replacement surgery, you must not
delay.

without it…!!

1When you delay a knee replacement surgery, you expose yourself to the risk of bone
spurs, which are abnormal bone extensions inside and outside the joint. These enhance
the pain and the damage to the knee.
2With a weak knee, your movement is restricted, leading to
decreased activity which in turn causes muscles and ligaments in
your knee becoming weak and losing function.
3Decreased mobility and increased pain
are two primary risks which you expose
yourself to when you delay a knee
replacement surgery.
4With increased difficulty in doing your daily activities, you
may feel frustrated and helpless, which will affect the
happiness quotient of your daily life.
Delaying a knee replacement surgery can lead to complications for a
patient;
