About Us

We are the Equality and Human Rights Commission.

We work to make sure everyone is treated fairly and gets their rights.

About this guide

This guide tells you about our new project and how you can complain about public transport in England, Scotland and Wales.

We can sometimes pay for a lawyer to complain for you if you do not have enough money for legal advice.

About the project

We want to find out if transport is helping disabled people or older people to get about like everyone else.

This might be on things like:

• trains

• buses

• taxis

• ferries

• coaches

• subway or underground

• trams

• coaches to holidayresorts

It does not include some things like air travel.

Why we want to find out more

We want to find out how transport companies can help disabled people and older people to travel.

The rule is that all public transport companies need to do this.

We know that some changes are already being made to transport to make it better.

But we also know that sometimes people have bad experiences and we want to stop that from happening again.

We might need to work with the transport companies to change some things.

For example, work together so people can report problems on transport, at stations or at bus stops to anyone who works for a transport company.

What we want to find out

We want to find out what the problems are for people getting on transport and travelling on transport.

And whether some groups of people have more problems than others.

This includes disabled people with conditions you might not be able to see like anxiety.

Problems might be things like:

• ticket websites not working forblind or deaf people

• no signs or not being able to hearannouncements at stations

• not getting help when trains arerunning late

How to complain

Tell your lawyer or adviser about your problem, where it happened and when. Your lawyer can then tell us in our survey:

If you don’t have a lawyer, you can go to the Law Society website to find one:

In England and Wales:

Website : www.solicitors.lawsociety.org.uk

In Scotland:

Website: www.lawscot.org.uk/find-a-solicitor/

We will try to sort out which complaints we can support within 2 weeks.
