At first glance the wider initial aper- ture therefore seems unnecessary. But as the considerable in- crease in extension when taking dose-ups results in a marked reduction of the effective jens speed and hence in focusing screen brightness, the maximum aperture of f/4 doubles the brightness of the screen image compared with the f/5.6 Jens. Furthermore, the shallow depth of fjeld associated with the new initial aperture makes it easier to recognize the plane of sharpness. Both factors facilitate the work of the photographer and give hirn more confidence in the composition of his picture. The recommendation that only extension tubes and no supple- mentary lensesshould be used tor dose-ups below the shortest marked distance holds good also tor the new Makro-Planar@ jens. This ensuresthat the good image quality of this jens is maintained. As is already indicated by the name of this new jens in a Prontor CFshutter, its main fjeld of application is dose-up photography. Like its predecessor, the 120 mm S-Planar@ T* f/5.6 jens, the new jens consistsof 6 elements in 4 groups which are arranged almost symmetrically to the iris diaphragm. This Makro-Planar@jens performs best in the region of slightly reduced imaging of the subject. The dose focusing distance is 0.8 m (reproduction ratio of 1:4.5). By inserting the Hasselblad extension tube 32 the macro range can be increasedto 1:2. It was a major achievement on the part of the designer that the initial aperture of the new Makro-Planar@lens could be increa- sed to f/4 compared with the f/5.6 of its predecessorwithout exceeding the optical dimensions of the f/5.6 jens or making any concessionson the image quality. Macro pictures are usually taken at small working apertures toincreasethe depth of fjeld. At first glance the wider initial aper-ture therefore seems unnecessary. But as the considerable in-crease in extension when taking dose-ups results in a markedreduction of the effective jens speed and hence in focusingscreen brightness, the maximum aperture of f/4 doubles thebrightness of the screen image compared with the f/5.6 Jens.Furthermore, the shallow depth of fjeld associatedwith thenew initial aperture makes it easier to recognize the plane ofsharpness. Both factors facilitate the work of the photographerand give hirn more confidence in the composition of his picture. The recommendation that only extension tubes and no supple-mentary lensesshould be used tor dose-ups below the shortestmarked distance holds good also tor the new [email protected] ensuresthat the good image quality of this jens ismaintained.

As isalready indicated by thename of this new jens in aProntor CFshutter, its mainfjeld of application is dose-up

photography. Like its predecessor, the 120 mm S-Planar@T*f/5.6 jens, the new jens consistsof 6 elements in 4 groupswhich are arranged almost symmetrically to the iris diaphragm. This Makro-Planar@jens performs best in the region of slightlyreduced imaging of the subject. The dose focusing distance is0.8 m (reproduction ratio of 1:4.5). Performance data:Makro-Planar@ T* f/4 - 120 mmNo.107836

1. MTF DiagramsThe image height u - calculated framthe image center - is entered in mm onthe horizontal axis of the graph. Themodulation transfer T (MTF = Modula-tion Transfer Factor) is entered on thevertical axis. Parameters of the graph arethe spatial frequencies R in cycles (Iinepairs) per mm given at the top of thispage. The lowest spatial frequency corre-sponds to the upper pair of curves, thehighest spatial frequency to the lowerpair. Above each graph the f-number kis given tor which the measurement wasmade. "White" light means that themeasurement was made with a subjectillumination having the approximatespectral distribution of daylight.

Unless otherwise indicated, the perform-ance data refer to large object distances, tor which normal photographic lensesare primarily used.

2. Relative illuminanceIn this diagram the horizontal axis givesthe image height u in mm and the ver-tical axis the relative illuminance E,bothtor full aperture and a moderatelystopped-down jens. The values tor E aredetermined ta king into account vignet-ting and natural light decrease.

3. DistortionHere again the image height u isenter-ed on the horizontal axis in mm. The ver-ticalaxisgives the distortion V in % ofthe relevant image height. A positivevalue tor V means that the actual imagepoint isfurther tram the image centerthan with perfectlydistortion-free imag-ing (pincushiondistortion);a negative Vindicates barrel distortion.

Modulation transfer T as a function of image height u. Slit orientation: tangential--- sagittalWhite light. Spatial frequencies R = 10, 20 and 40 cycles/mm
