WestJet announces intent to purchase 65 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft

WestJet entered into a letter of intent to purchase 65 737 MAX aircraft from Boe-ing, consisting of 40 737 MAX 8 and 25 737 MAX 7 aircraft, with delivery scheduled to begin in September 2017. The 737 MAX aircraft will be equipped with CFM International LEAP-1B engines, and is expected to reduce fuel burn and CO2 emis-sions by 13% as compared with the most fuel-efficient single-aisle aircraft currently available. Addi-tional design updates, including Boeing’s Advanced Technology winglets and the Boeing Sky Inte-rior, will also contribute to these improvements in fuel efficiency and WestJet’s overall guest expe-rience. Boeing currently has firm orders from five other airlines in North America for its 737 MAX aircraft. The order has been val-ued at $6.3bn at list prices.

Transaero Airlines selects Engine Al-liance GP7200 engines for Airbus A380 fleet

Transaero Airlines selected Engine Alliance GP7200 engines to power its four Airbus A380 aircraft. Transaero has also agreed to a 12-year Fleet Management Agreement to cov-er the maintenance, repair and overhaul of the engines. The engine and Fleet Management Agreement is valued at more than $500m over the life of the agreement. The delivery of the A380 aircraft starting in 2015, will not only be one of the major milestones in Transaero’s history but also for the entire Russian civil avia-

Bombardier and Rostekhnologii (“Rostec”), a state corporation controlled by the Russian Federation, signed a series of preliminary agreements that include a letter of intent (LOI) for the sale of 50 Q400 NextGen aircraft; and a Market Development Agreement reached with Rostec and its aircraft leasing subsidiary, Avia Capital Services, that will provide an op-portunity to place at least 50 additional Q400 NextGen aircraft in the region. The parties also concluded a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to validate the opportunity to set up a Q400 NextGen final assembly line in Russia. The LOI, Market Development Agree-ment and MOU were signed at the 2013 International Aviation and Space Salon, known as the MAKS 2013 Air Show, held at Moscow’s Zhukovsky Airport. Should definitive agreements be reached, based on the list price of the Q400 NextGen airliner, a firm-order contract for 100 Q400 NextGen aircraft would be valued at approximately $3.39bn.

The establishment of a Q400 NextGen aircraft final assembly line in the Russian Federa-tion, as outlined in the MOU, is a key commercial requirement of both the LOI and the Market Development Agreement. Under the MOU, Bombardier and Rostec will validate the opportunity to set up a Q400 NextGen final assembly line in Russia that would be managed by a joint venture between the two parties. Should definitive agreements be reached, a Q400 NextGen aircraft final assembly line in Russia would produce aircraft for Russian customers and would be incremental to Bombardier’s current Q400 NextGen aircraft production operations in Toronto, Canada. Bombardier and Rostec are working towards definitive agreements to be concluded in 2014, subject to obtaining the required internal, governmental and third-party approvals, as well as other usual conditions.

KLC selected the Acro seats in order to intro-duce a new Economy Comfort-zone Class on its Fokker 70 fleet, similar to its Boeing fleet in Europe. By installing the new seats, a reconfig-uration of the front section of the aircraft has been made possible. Consequently, KLC pas-sengers can then (winter 2013/2014) enjoy an extra four centimetres of legroom compared with Economy Class, whilst European Business Class passengers enjoy an extra eight centime-tres in pitch.

RUAG grows in civil business and increases profitability

In the first half of 2013, international technology group RUAG increased net sales by 3.4% year-on-year to CHF845m (previous year: CHF817m). Earnings before interest and taxes (EBIT) rose 13% to CHF44m (CHF 39m). Civil business is gaining further in relation to military business: 56% of sales was generated by civil applications. The fastest growth was seen in RUAG’s international sales in North America and the Asia-Pacific region. Both the increase in civil business and international expansion had a positive impact on profitability. Four out of five divisions reported growth in the first half of the year. Only in the Defence division – the strategic technology partner for land forces – did sales decline compared with the year-back period. Growth in civil business and international expansion are responsible for the 13% rise in EBIT and have thus both proved to be profitability drivers. RUAG generated 56% (53%) of net sales with civil and 44% (47%) with military applications. In the civil sector, particular gains were seen in aerostructures, aerospace and business aviation. Sales to the DDPS (Swiss Federal Department of Defence, Civil Protection and Sport), still the most im-portant single customer, again declined slightly from 34% to 33%.

HNA Group, whose head office is located in Haikou capital of Hainan province in southern China, includes amongst its many activities (air transport, tourism, real estate, industry) the 4th Chinese airline company operating about 300 aircrafts, essentially to interna-tional destinations from China and employs more than 80.000 employees around the world. The strength and the ambition of its new shareholder will allow ESMA, already leader in the field of aeronautical training, to pursue its marketing strategy focused on the domestic market and the North African market (Maghreb). The opening towards Africa, already engaged through the contracts signed with Equatorial Guinea and Chad, together with the advanced contacts with Nigeria and Gabon which will be intensified. New president of ESMA, Olivier Georges, stemming of the banking and financial en-vironment, particularly in the area of large companies financing, has a wealth training experience in the field of economics.

Boeing projects the commercial aviation industry will need more than one million new pilots and technicians to support the expanding demand for new airplane deliveries over the next two decades. Projected pilot demand is increasing worldwide, as is demand for technicians in some regions. At an event marking the launch of 787 flight training at the Boeing Flight Services campus in Miami, the company released the 2013 Pilot and Techni-cian Outlook. The Boeing outlook indicates that by 2032 the world will re-quire: 498,000 new com-mercial airline pilots and 556,000 new commercial airline maintenance tech-nicians. The 2013 outlook projects significant in-creases in pilot demand, compared to previous forecasts, in all regions except Europe, which de-clined slightly over last year’s outlook. Overall, the demand is driven by steadily increasing airplane deliveries, particularly single-aisle airplanes, and represents a global requirement for about 25,000 new pilots annually. Global demand for technicians remains significant, at approximately 28,000 new technicians required annually. However, the introduction of more efficient and smarter airplanes will require fewer mechanics over time, as aging aircraft—which typically require more maintenance—are retired from service. New air-plane technologies featuring more advanced components are likely to lead in some areas to lower maintenance requirements and corresponding lower technician demand.

Spirit AeroSystems announced additional workforce reductions in Wichita, Kan., to begin next month. The actions are the re-sult of an ongoing workforce assessment designed to balance the workforce, reduce overhead costs, increase efficiency and drive improved performance. Reductions will be accomplished through a voluntary retirement program, a voluntary layoff program, and following the voluntary exercise, a layoff of management and salaried employees.

West Star Aviation was named an author-ized installation dealer for the Jetcraft Cor-poration’s Enhanced Flight Vision System (EFVS), known as HUD Vision Access system for the Challenger 604 aircraft. In June 2013, the Federal Administration (FAA) awarded “lower landing credit” approved supplemen-tal type certificate (STC) for the EFVS. The HUD Vision Access system provides numerous benefits to the operator, including: Safer taxi, take-off and land in low visibility conditions such as total darkness, fog, rain, snow, and

IFE Services announced a strategic partnership with SmartTray Interna-tional LLC. whereby SmartTray IFE plat-forms will be included in IFE Services’ portfolio of solutions to its customers. The SmartTray X1, X2 and X3 platforms make using portable electronic devices in-flight easier, help protect fragile de-vices from falling and breaking in-flight, greatly enhance the traveler experience and make the cabin safer for passen-gers and in-flight crews.

Aircell, a provider of in-flight con-nectivity equipment and services to the business aviation market, released that its Gogo Biz service will expand to include voice capabilities, beginning October 1st. Gogo Biz was originally launched in 2009 as an Internet-only service in the business aviation mar-ket. Because Gogo Biz operates on Aircell’s air-to-ground technology, its voice calls are among the clearest in aviation – on par with mobile phone calls on the ground. As a “two-in-one” service, Gogo Biz offers Internet and voice capabilities from a single system, which can eliminate the need for separate systems, dramatically re-ducing equipment requirements and installation costs.

ATR obtained the company’s receipt of fleet-wide approval for new generation ATR air-craft to operate from three more unpaved runways in the remote parts of Russia. Rus-sian Interstate Aviation Committee (IAC)delivered the approval in late June this year. This certification brings to four a total number of runways already approved for use and op-erations: Mys Kamenny, Lensk, Bodaibo and Igrim, the latest being certified last year. The certification allows ATR aircraft to operate from gravel, dirt and grass strips. This signifi-cant upgrade to ATR’s outstanding perform-ance package was accomplished runway per runway, each of which had undergone exten-sive and thorough operational expertise and testing performed by ATR engineering team. More unpaved air strips are being assessed to gain approval for ATR operations.

Air Lease Corporation was assigned an in-vestment grade corporate credit rating of BBB- with a stable outlook by Standard and Poor’s Ratings Services. Additionally, ALC’s senior un-secured notes due in 2016, 2017, and 2020 will also carry the same BBB- rating. Standard & Poor’s highlighted in its press release that the BBB- rating reflects Air Lease Corpora-tion’s position as a rapidly growing provider of aircraft operating leases, its ownership of young and diverse new-technology aircraft with stable asset values, and the expectation that ALC’s growth will make it among the largest players in the industry within the next few years. ALC’s low debt to equity ratio and strong interest coverage ratios were also key to the ratings outcome.

• The head of Customer Service, Anssi Komulainen, announced he will leave his duties as the head of Customer Service and as a member of Finnair’s Executive and Management Boards on August 31, 2013, and continue as a senior advisor until the end of February, 2014. Komulainen has worked at Finnair since 2001, most recently as senior vice president, Customer Service since 2010. Finnair will not recruit a suc-cessor for Komulainen, which means that there will be one less member on the Executive Board.

• Cardiff Aviation strengthened its leadership with the appointment of highly-expe-rienced aviation executive Andrew Braley as commercial director. Braley joins from A J Walter Aviation (AJW), a leading independent specialist in the supply, exchange, repair and lease of commercial aircraft spares, where he was director of Business Development.
