MALAGA TRADE FAIR AND EXHIBITIONS CENTRE
CONSTRUCTION PROJECT AND TECHNICAL ASSISTANCE TO THE
MANAGEMENT STRUCTURAL WORK
Malaga, 1999-2002
Conceived by architect Ángel Asenjo,
the Malaga Convention and Exhibition
Centre building is impressive due to its
monumental scale and geometry, the
rich use of novel elements and bright,
bold colours.
The main element, which includes an
enormous foyer, exhibition and
conference halls and a restaurant, has a
striking undulating roof formed by 8
modules with a 30m width and variable
lengths of up to 190m, a floor area of
over 40,000 m2 and heights of up to
20m. In longitudinal section the gentle
undulations are out-of-phase, creating
an interesting visual interplay of lines.
The structure of the standard module is
solved using longitudinal metal plate
girders with a curved geometry and
without joints, and spatial transverse
girders designed mostly with tubular
profiles.
• Aerial photograph of the building.
• General view of the main access façade.
In one of the corners over the
Conference Hall there is a volume, over
100 m long, that recalls the scales of a
fish due to its stepped form and the
finishing materials of the roof. The
adjacent tower, colloquially called the
“fishtail”, is formed by two triangular
prisms of up to 40 m in height and 70 m
in length clad in titanium. Both buildings
are used for offices.
• Interior view of the main access foyer.
• Other important elements of this striking
design are the slender supports in the form
of tripods and the original entrance canopy.

the construction work.
