Malang is the second largest city in East Java after Surabaya with an area of 252.10 km².

From the data in 2014 Malang city has a population of 857,891 Souls, with a population density of 3,400 / km ².

The name Malang is taken from Sanskrit Mala Angkuca Icwara or Malangkucecwara which means God destroys evil.

Malang is surrounded by mountains; Bromo, Arjuno, Semeru, Kawi, Kelud, and Panderman.

In addition to the mountains, the city of Malang also offers a stunning beaches. Among others Balekambang, Sempu, Bajul mati, Banyu anjlok, Sendang biru, etc ..

Malang Backpacker was found in 2017 by Bayu Chrisna & His brother Hyu. They were hoteliers that love to met new people and share about what they excpect while stay in Malang.

While public transportation is the most popular, but it will be lots of money saving if you decide to rent a vehicle. Why? Because you can drive freely from one location to another it is rather than use multiple public transportation.

Motorcylce

Motorcyle is best way if you are adventurous person. You can drive freely without worry about the traffic jam. Price: IDR 75.000 – 100.000/24 hours. Include 2 helmets and 1 poncho raincoat. Exclude petrol.

Car (city use only)

Car rent is comfort for group travellers. For those who want ease, there are car rent with driver as simple guide. Price IDR 450.000-650.000/12hours. Include driver and petrol. Exclude parking fee.

Trail / Cross Bike (for Bromo purpose)

For Bromo trip, trail / cross bike is a must if you don’t want to stuck in the middle of jungle or Bromo’s sea of sands. Price IDR 250.000-350.000/12hours. Include 1 helmet & google.

Bromo is the main attraction in Malang.

The magnificent sunrise of Bromo could gather

peoples around the world to travels across the sea to

see its beauty.

There are some ways to go to Bromo:

First, you can book a Bromo midnight tour to see the famous

sunrise. This tour starts at 00.00 in the midnight, the Jeep will

pick you up at the hotel and goes to the viewpoint to see the

sunrise, goes down to the parking area and trekking to the crater (here you can rent a horse), then continues to visits the savannah, sea of sands, Widodaren hills, and Teletubbies hills. If there are still more time (mostly in private tour) you can visit Coban Pelangi (the rainbow waterfall) with additional price. Price IDR 650.000-850.000/pax (foreigner)

Second, if sunrise is not your main destination, Bromo can be reached by trail / dirt bike. You can start your journey at morning and feel the breeze of the clear and fresh air near bromo. Be careful when the trip departs, because in the morning is the time from the Bromo jeep back to the city of Malang, They will down at high speed from your opposites.

Q: Where’s the best place to stay before the Bromo Trip?

A: Eastern Malang is the best places to stay, it can cut about

1hour of the trip before the journey begins, it means more

time to having rest. But if you want to explore the city,

stay in the center of Malang is acceptable.

Q: What can I visits if I stay in Eastern Malang?

A: You will find waterfall, ricefields, traditional market,

river tubing, pine forest, and traditional transportation called “dokar” (horse powered cab).

Q: And what’s the benefit if I choose to stay in the center of Malang?

A: You will find cheap lodging to 5 stars hotels. Some lodging managed by the Bromo tour operator. And it is near to Batu (around 45 minutes) so you can explore more area.

Q: Which is better? By Jeep or motorcycle?

A: Choose the one suits you better. Jeep for sunrise hunter or trail bike for adventurous and free person. But it is not recommended to hunting sunrise with motorcycle. And don’t forget to count your personel, for a group above 3 persons Bromo tour with Jeep is cheaper.

Yes, Bromo are awesome from every point of view.

But, did you know that there are some spots that are

perfect for enjoying Bromo and great for photoshoot?

Seruni Point – Seruni point located in “Penanjakan 2”.

The magnificent Bromo could be seen in a top of building.

Pasir Berbisik – or Whispering sands. From this point you can see the sea of sands, and caldera as barrier of the Sea of sands and forest of Bromo mountain.

The Savannah – In the southern area of Bromo, you will treated by beautiful weeds that surrounded by hills.

King kong Hills – it is one of sunrise viewpoint. From this spot you can see the landscape of Cemoro Lawang village.

Pura Luhur Poten – This temple located under Mount Bromo. This temple is a place of worship for Tengger Hindus. This temple is very unique because it is located in a sea of sand

For history lovers, the temple is one of the places that

must be visited. Malang is one of the city with the

most temple relics in Indonesia.

Singosari/ Singhasari – Candi Singosari located in

the northern Malang, it is the most famous temple in Malang.

The area of Singosari temple has 2 big statue that was used as entrance gate of Singosari kingdom.

Stupa Sumberawan – Altough the place was known as a temple, the building actually is a stupa. The Sumberawan stupa surrounded by banyan/beringin tree and has a small river at the side of it. Under this stupa there is a spring that is believed to cure all diseases.

Candi Jawar - Candi Jawar is one of the temples which is a relic of Majapahit Kingdom. Temple that looks like gate is located at the foot of Mount Semeru, the highest mount in Java. Unlike the other temples that are mostly located in a garden complex, this temple is in an open space filled with weeds of grass.

When you’re in Malang, it’s not only Bromo.

There are plenty of beautiful beaches that can be a

place to relaxing from city crowd.

To be at the beaches in southern Malang,

it takes around 3 hours from the center of the city.

You can goes there by rent a car or motorcycle.

Balekambang – It’s the famous beach in the southern of Malang that has a Hindu temple in a little

island called “Wisanggeni”. People can get through there by bridges that connecting the island with the beach. This beach is so popular and already has complete public facilities such as lodging, restaurant, toilet, etc.

Goa Cina – Goa Cina means “Chinesse Cave”. People called that because the elders said that there was a chinesse man whom meditating in a cave near the beach.

Teluk Asmara – Teluk Asmara means “Bay of Romance”, this beach located in the center of a coastline between Balekambang to Sendang Biru beach. Some people called Teluk Asmara as “The little Raja Ampat”.

Sendang Biru – Sendang Biru is a place where fishermans gathers and collected their catch. There’s a saltwater fish market, you can buy fish for dinner or enjoy the grilled fish in the beach.

Lenggoksono – Lenggoksono is a well known beach by its waterfall that straight to the ocean called Banyu Anjlok (Falling Water) and its waves that friendly for the surfer.

Pantai Goa Cina

◦ Goa Cina Beach is a beach in the southern plains located in the Tumpak Awu Hamlet, Sitiarjo Village, Sumbermanjing Wetan District, Malang Regency, East Java. The real name of this beach is Rowo Indah Beach.

Exciting holiday while enjoying the underwater scenery.

Pantai Tiga Warna – To visit this beach you must made a booking first.

To enter this snorkeling spot you have to use local guide.

Sumber Sira – Sumber Sira is a spring with cool air and shady trees

around it. At the bottom of the pool there is an algae which makes unforgettable

snorkeling experiances.

Sumber Jenon - What is interesting from this spring is the laying of ancient tree fossils in the pond.

Teluk Kletekan - With calm water, the Kletekan bay is the most suitable snorkeling spot in the Malang area other than Tiga Warna beach.

Malang has lots of waterfalls, some of them has well managed, and some of them left naturally.

Coban Rondho – It means The waterfall of widow. Legend said that there are couple went there, they will be separated. Whatever it says, Coban Rondho still become the main object to visit because it is easy to reach.

Coban Rais – If you are interested in adventure, Coban Rais is a perfect place. You have to trekking on a side of river before you reach the waterfall. The path itself is a dried land that if there are rain it will become a river.

Coban Talun – Coban Talun is so popular lately because they have unique photo spots like Apache Camp, Pagupon Camp, Flower Garden, etc.

Coban Jidor – It takes a walk around 1hour to reach Coban Jidor. You have to walk on a side of a cliff. After the adrenalin pumping, you’ll find amazing waterfal with small cave near it. The waterfall is not high but the water flows in a high volume. This waterfall is perfect if you’re about to take Bromo trip because it is located in one way.

Coban Pelangi – This waterfall is also famous for the tourists who take the Bromo tour, because some tour operator put Coban Pelangi include their Bromo tour package.

Coban Jodo – If You’re an adventurous person, try to visit this place. You’ll get not one but four waterfall at one trip. This waterfall placed in Jabung – Tumpang (One way to mt. Bromo).

Theme park is one of the “must visit” places for local tourists while in Malang. But if you are interested these are some theme parks in Malang and Batu.

Hawai Waterpark – Hawaii waterpark is a big and modern waterpark, it offers various enjoyable spots,

the famous one is “The Tsunami”.

Jawa Timur Park – Jawa Timur Park is a group of theme parks under one management. In Jatim Park 2 you can find adrenalin rushing playground, modern zoo, and animal museum. While in Jawa Timur Park 3 you can find the replica of dinosaurs era, Japanese town, etc.

Museum Angkut – In the Museum featuring a variety of vehicles from various times and countries. Museum Angkut has some concept of location in it. There are European zones, Hollywood, Chinatown, and more. The operating hours start at 12.00 and close at 20.00 every day.

Eco Green Park - Eco Green Park is an educational tourism park that is still one with Jatim Park Group. Visitors can enjoy quite a lot of interesting rides including a giant elephant statue made of used television. This playground and learning center has interesting rides such as Geology Science Center, Walking Bird, Animal Farm, Duck Kingdom, World Parrots, Multimedia Dome, to rice fields used to learn to grow plants such as rice and vegetables.

Predator Fun Park - As the name suggests, a tourist spot located at Jalan Tlengkung No. 315, Junrejo, Batu City keeps many predators. The playground with the concept of horror, but educative and interesting it has quite a collection of crocodiles and predatory fish that can be seen by visitors from close.

Since long ago Malang is known for its cool air and become a place of noble family to calm the mind. There are some places that are still natural and away from the noise of the city.

Sumber / springs – Sumber Sirah, the ground of this spring is overgrown with beautiful algae, making

it an interesting place to snorkel or just swim. Sumber Jenon, has a light blue water that is accommodated in a round-shaped pond with a depth of about 5 meters. It has trunk of a tree that people beleief it is a fossil. Sumber Maron, the river flows to a little waterfall where visitors can play at it, we could have river tubing at Sumber Maron.

Cangar / Hot springs – It is located about 1hour from Batu or 2hours from Malang. The springs contained sulfur on it’s hot water.

Selecta - Selecta has several favorite spots including Selecta flower garden and Selecta bath. Selecta Flower Park has an area of about 10 hectares out of a total of 18 hectares of all tourism. At Selecta park there are at least dozens of flower species that have enchanting beauty. Whereas Selecta Bath is a swimming area for visitors with some cool ponds.

Culinary is a part of the travelling enjoyment. These are the list of culinary places in Malang.

Rujak cingur & Gado-gado – Rujak cingur is a combination of steamed and fresh vegetables that served

with peanut sauce, and “cingur” means cow’s mouth. And Gado-gado is kind of vegetables salad, also served with peanut sauce. Both sounds the same, but trust me, it is totally different.

Sate (satay) – Don’t forget to try sate (satay), it is roasted meat that served with peanut sauce. You can choose between chicken or goat meats.

Soto & Rawon – Soto is a typical Indonesian food such as soup made from meat and vegetable broth. The most commonly used meat is beef and chicken. Rawon is Indonesian cuisine in the form of black sauce soup as a mixture of typical ingredients that use kluwek. Rawon, though known as East Java specialties.

Pecel – Pecel a food that uses peanut sauce as the main ingredients are mixed with various types of vegetables. This food is popular especially in Yogyakarta, Central Java, and East Java.

Culinary is a part of the travelling enjoyment. These are the list of culinary places in Malang.

OEN palace - Delights of ice cream that has existed since 1930 makes this culinary place is so

legendary. Toko Oen is a hangout for the Dutch people in the past. And until now Oen restorant located at Jalan Basuki Rachmad Malang (around Alun alun Malang) is still always visited by foreign tourists who are in Malang.

Bakso Kota “Cak Man” – If you are a meatball lovers, this place is perfect. It offer various kinds of meatballs.

Inggil restaurant – Inggil is combination of local food restaurant and a museum. There, you can learn about history of Malang.

Café sawah Pujon kidul – As it name, sawah means ricefields. This restaurant has unique environment. It is located in Batu, about 45 minutes from Malang.

For a short time travellers, usually they comes to Malang only to visit mt. Bromo as the main interest. These is how to manage your time well for Bromo trip.

Find motorcycle/car rent – Motorcycle is perfect for backpackers, it saves not only times but also

money. But if you are travelling in group, car is the best transportation, it will be cheaper than rent motorcycle at a time. The price of motorcycle rent start from IDR 75.000 – 250.000 depend of the vehicle type.

Before going to the lodging, take a little walk to Kampung Warna-Warni (colorfull housing), it only take 5minutes walk to south of the trainstation.

Then, going back to the trainstation and head to the west you’ll find city hall.

After take a little walk, maybe you can rest a while or taking bath at the lodging (standard check-in time is at 02.00 p.m).

If you are fit enough you can continues to see the city or maybe take a rest for Bromo journey that starts at 00.00 a.m.

Bromo tour end at 12.00 p.m. After that you can rest a while and visits the tourism objects or enjoy the

culinary.

Perfect places to visit after taking Bromo trip is Batu city, it is located in the west of Malang. Batu offer lots of theme parks (Batu night spectacular, Museum Angkut, Jawa Timur Park 1-3, Predator fun park) or just visits Gunung Banyak to see people paragliding and enjoy Malang from the high.

Never takes the springs tour or waterfall because it will be dark soon.

If you are stay more than 2 nights, taking the beaches tour or waterfall tour is OK, or maybe you can try the “Living in Pujiharjo” package to experienced to live with locals while visiting beach, coffee plantation, and ricefields. This package includes tickets, one night stay at local guesthouse, and meals. The price only IDR 200.000/person.

MACITO is a tourism bus service that you can use for free. This green bus has vintage design consists of two floors with capacity of 40 passengers. This bus operated everyday at 09.00a.m – 12.00p.m.
