• The King of Portugal became fascinated with Malaysia because of its wealth.

• He sent Admiral Diogo Lopes De Sequeira to Malaysia to see if Malaysia would be

good to trade with. • The Portuguese saw Malaysia as a way to

continue their expansion.• Afonso de Albuquerque finally succeeded

in colonizing Malaysia for the Portuguese.

Portuguese

• Second country to colonize Malaysia.• Ruled over Malaysia for 183 years.

• The Dutch East India Company wanted Malaysia so that they could control more trading routes and so that they to could expand and gain power in Southeast Asia.• Cornelis Matelief de Jonge led many attacks on the Portuguese occupying

Malaysia and finally took control in 1641.

Dutch

British• The Dutch and British signed the Anglo-Dutch Treaty as a

way to resolve issues of land occupation and usage between the two countries.

• The treaty gave Britain control of the North Malaysia and Dutch control of the South Malaysia.

• This gave Britain better control of trading routes previously dominated by the East India Company.

• The treaty was signed by George Canning and Charles Watkin Williams

Japanese

• While the Japanese didn’t play a huge part in colonizing Malaysia they did occupy it.

• Japan occupied Malaysia while they fought in many battles including Pearl Harbor.

• The Japanese Army occupied Malaysia and fought for control from 1941-1945
