The Sikaran Supremo is Now 86 By Elpidio Seletaria Jr. 8th DBB (#1487)

As most everybody knows, the Sikaran Supremo, Grand-master Meliton C. Geronimo, the one and only Grandmaster and 10th Degree Red Belt in Sikaran, was born on March 10, 1927. On Sunday, March 10, 2013, Grand-master Geronimo marked his 86th birthday. The celebration was held in Mambog House, in Baras, Rizal, the town known as the Home of Sikaran, and the home of Grandmaster Geronimo. And yes, he is home now. He moved out of Antipolo to Baras where he could be well-taken care of by the experience caregivers hired by his children to look after all his needs. I arrived at 11:00 in the morning with my brother, Alex, who volunteered to give me a ride, and his wife, Erly, Glen Sapo, and Ray Samson, my classmate in high school who asked to tag along because he wanted to meet the Sikaran Grandmaster person-ally. After greeting the Grand-master, we were met by spouses Meliton Geronimo Jr. and Raquel,

and Janet, Meliton Jr’s sister, and invited us to take an early lunch. I said it was a very good idea because I was already starving. We had a hearty lunch while dis-cussing the plan for the day. The food was really good. They served variety of Filipino delicacies. What caught my picky sense of taste was the remarkably delicious na-

tive pig lechon, which I learned, was donated by Henry Bio, 9th Degree Red & White Belt, and the Regional Director of the WSBP USA Chapter. Not long after, a number of visitors began to swell in. Most of them were Sikaran se-niors coming from various places outside of Baras. After serving lunch, the program, emceed by Meliton Jr. commenced. Several speakers, in-cluding Master Jimmy Geronimo, and me took turn talking about Grandmaster Geronimo and his accomplishment in transforming Sikaran from a farmers’ form of no-holds barred kick fighting into a martial art as a sport and as a tool for self-defense. Grandmas-ter Geronimo, now wheelchair-bound, was intensely listening to each speech, while ostensibly holding back his tears seemingly reminiscing his early days in Si-karan. was awed when Meliton Jr. pre-sented him a copy of the book “World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines TEACHERS ACADEMY Book One” authored by Meliton Jr. himself. Meliton Jr. stressed the planned full-blast standardization of Sikaran and the establishment of the Sikaran Teachers Academy with emphasis on the curricula contained in his book, and the publication of a uniform program of instructions confined in the lesson plan of every instructor. Punong Lakan Garitony Nicolas of the Modern Arnis Mano Mano and Executive Director of the FMA Hall of Fame, delivered an inspiring message, recognizing the accomplishment of Grand-master Geronimo as a respected figure in Filipino Martial Arts and responsible for the propagation of Sikaran all over the world. Perry Gil S. Mallari, Sports Editor of The Manila Times, also conveyed an equally rousing speech, recogniz-ing Grandmaster Geronimo’s con-

tribution to the Filipino Martial Arts as the proponent of Sikaran worldwide. Most of the Sikaran seniors present were requested to deliver their greetings to the Grandmaster. After the program, I initiated the meeting with the Sikaran Seniors, Club Instructors and other WSBP members where I discussed the salient provisions

in WSBP By-Laws, which I revised and amended, and the reasons for their revisions and amend-ments. I was joined by Glen Sapo, WSBP Corporate Secretary, in responding to the questions que-ried by some Sikaran Seniors and other WSBP members in regard to the By-Laws, and by Master Jimmy Geronimo and Meliton Jr. with respect to the new certifi-cates and other operational and administrative matters. The occasion was not only merriment for Grandmaster Geronimo’s birth anniversary but a get-together of several Sikaran seniors, including me, where I was able to rub elbows with a number of them. It was also an atmo-sphere of reaffirmation of the firm commitment towards a strong and an enhanced leadership of Master Jaime Geronimo, as the Executive Vice President with the help of his staff, Emily Samiliano, Leony Pilar, and Erlina Bartolata. Aside from my group: Glen Sapo, Ray Samson, and Alex and Erly Seletaria, the event was attended by of course, Meliton Geronimo Jr, Raquel Geronimo

Sikaran Festival 2013 By Elpidio Seletaria Jr, 8th DBB (#1487)

In 2000, Baras Municipal Resolution No. 66-2000 declared a day of celebration to be known as Sikaran Day Festival. On January 28, 2001, Baras Municipal Mayor Roberto G. Ferrera issued Execu-tive Order No. 1, Declaring last Sunday of January of every year as “Sikaran Day Festival” for Youth Sports Development of a healthy and alert citizenry. In 2008, an Or-dinance was passed to move the Sikaran Day Festival from the last Sunday of January to the last Sun-day of March in honor of Sikaran Grandmaster Meliton C. Geronimo whose birth month is March. From then on, Sikaran Festival has been held every last Sunday of March each year. This year, however, it was moved to March 23 since the last Sunday of March fell on Easter Sunday. The Festival started with a usual parade around Baras Town-ship, participated in by some mu-nicipal employees, schoolchildren and teachers, and various Sikaran chapters within Baras and neigh-

boring towns, and from some other places. The parade ended in front of the Baras Municipal Gymnasium where the main part of the festivity would be held. The main program was preceded by the entry of the different Sikaran chapters into the gymnasium, carrying their respective banners, while being introduced by the Emcees, Mas-ter Jimmy Geronimo, and Erlina Bartolata. When all the teams were in place, the National An-

them, Rizal Mabuhay, and Baras Hymn were played. It was formally opened by the remarks of Hon. Jovita P. Cawicaan, Sangguniang Bayan Member (SBM) - Commit-tee on Tourism, then by Hon. Bien Garrovillas, SBM-Committee on Education, who discoursed on the History of Sikaran, and wel-come remarks by Hon. Solomon C. Vallestero, ABC Chairman, with the ensuing message from Hon. Nickson Nimeno, Provincial Sports Coordinator. My speech, where I touched on the prominence of Baras as the Home of Sikaran, was followed by Ernesto Millanes, Meliton Geronimo, Jr, Ms. Susan Mendoza, Baras Tourism Officer, and Ms. Generosa Carmen Sumu-long Ledonio, Provincial Tourism Officer. Hon. KC Robles, who was running for Mayor of Baras, repre-sented her father, Mayor Wilfredo Robles, while Vice Governor Frisco San Juan Jr represented Rizal Gov-ernor Casimiro Ynares III. Grand-master Geronimo also conveyed his message to all.

PM that lasted for almost ten (10) hours, far from the planned con-clusion at 3:00 PM. Aklan Chapter garnered the Overall Team Cham-pionship, followed by Philex Mining of Baguio City and Taguig, Metropolitan Manila Chapter. The Raffle Drawing began at 3:00 o’clock in the afternoon, as scheduled, although it was conducted while the tournament was underway. All the prizes were won by the lucky ticket holders, which were awarded to the win-ners on the spot. The tournament coincid-ing with the 2013 Sikaran Festival was generally successful, al-though numerous improvement and innovations are needed to make it extra desirable and more confined to the time frame of the given tournament program.

Fund Raising Project

Pursuant to Article XVII, Section One, of the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Philippines By-laws, the first fund raising project was undertaken to raise funds to finance the social programs of the WSBP. The by-laws of the WSBP created the Emergency Fund, the Scholarship Program, and the Mortuary Fund. Article XVII, Section 4, which created the Emergency Fund, states: “Any member or immediate family member, who has medical emergency or other immediate form of emergency may apply for financial assis-tance. After its creation, the WSBP was able to extend aid to a member who was in dire medical need. Like-wise a member who incurred an injury during a WSBP sanctioned Tournament availed of this fund. Article XVII Section 5, created the Scholarship Program. Due to limited funds, the program was re-stricted to Region 4. The first three recipients of the scholarship program are:

An Executive Order was issued by the WSBP Supreme Council that as soon as funds allow, this program will be expanded to cover all the regional chapters in the Philippines. Article XVII, Section 6, was the foreboding-sounding Mortuary Fund created to render financial assis-tance in the death of a member or immediate family of a member. Although this is a project that the WSBP hope will not be used, it was tapped twice already in its very short period of existence. The fund-raising campaign was successful, even if the money raised, compared to the need was not enough. Nevertheless, it was a good start. The prizes, donated by the World Sikaran Brotherhood of the Phil-ippines International Executive Council, based in the United States, were all won fair and square. The major prizes, including a laptop computer was won by Angelo Fulgencio, the flat screen high def TV was won by Roma Floriza Rio; the camera cell phones were won by Donnabel Cuevas and Lilia Brown. Consolation prizes of 2 electric fans, 2 cavans of rice, 16 cases of milk, 15 bags of groceries worth five hundred each and 10 Sikaran books were also won.
