Institution: La Sapienza University of Rome

Supervisor: Prof. Francesco Purini

Exam: Dissertation project

Evaluation: With honour

Project: Le Radiateur, new residential complex in the centre of Paris

Timeline: Sep - Dec 04 preliminary studies Jan - Nov 05 design

Description: The project consists of a massive

demolition of the buildings located between the Hôtel des Invalides and the École Militaire. The new complex is composed of two architectur-al sectors: Le Radiateur, a residential building composed of eight aligned towers linked by the same number of horizontal buildings, forming a square grid rising to a height of 300 metres, and a shopping mall of about 20,000 sq.m. Le Radiateur hosts 1,040 duplex apartments of 45 sqm each overlooking the River Seine and 1,216 one-story apartments of 40 sq.m in the towers facing Montparnasse.

Projects: Below: Project’s drawings for residential building in the XIII ar-rondissement in Paris. Currently under construction. The build-ing hosts 14 duplex apartments

composed so as to exploit the internal space in the best possible way while applying the best in-tegration of the interior and the exterior.

Opposite: New Courthouse in Pontoise, built be-tween 2003 and 2005. Building of about 20,000 sq.m with 11 courtrooms, large public areas and many offices, effectively resulting in monu-mental intervention in the historical city centre of Pontoise. The complex organisation of space optimises the building’s functionality and allows direct sun lighting in the internal spaces.

Project: Architectural Competition Città di Pietra at the X Venice Biennale

Description: The project, built on the demol-ished site of Punta Perotti, con-sists in the reconstruction of the

sea front in the costal part of the city of Bari. The plan presents a system of buildings linked by a pedestrian walkway network, piazzas and gar-dens. The complex reflects the image of the local stone quarries and uses the traditional building techniques typical of the Mediterranean area.

Projects: Below: Competition for the new town hall of Riyadh. Located be-tween King Fahad Road (the city’s most congested road) and the complex urban fabric, the pro-ject proposes the creation of a

formal link between these two so anti-thetical situations, developing a build-ing on the basis of alignments aimed at the creation of specific visual perspectives.

Opposite: New Tecnopolo Tiburtino office build-ing in Rome, built between 2006 and 2007. It consists of four stories with an internal court-yard, measuring a total of 10,000 square metres. There is a strong contrast between the rigour of the base and the non-conventional style that characterises the higher part and the façades.

Project: New Cultural Centre in Acilia (Rome). It is a building of about 1,000 sq.m on one single floor, consisting of a hall, three large reading rooms reserved for ped-agogic activities and secondary

areas for offices, IT rooms, cafeterias, welcome area and services. External areas are reserved for recreational activities, gardens and parking lots. The architectural composition is a function-al aggregation of these areas, heterogeneously organised around an inner courtyard opened to the park. A long external ramp leads to a terrace.

Project: The new Alessandrino Cultural Centre in Rome

Client: Municipality of Rome

Partners: Arch. Emilio Puglielli

Assistants: Arch. Sarah Lollini, Marco Ciampa

Timeline: Oct - Dec 2007

Description: This project is based on the dual challenges posed by the plot

located on the outskirts of Centocelle, one with the suburb and the other with the pre-existing context as shown by the ruins of the Alessandri-no aqueduct. The various functions were organ-ised along a wall perpendicular to the aqueduct, formalising the border between the Centocelle district and the urban disaggregation of Tor Tre Teste. This Cultural Centre is organised on two main floors and a basement floor. It hosts 2,500 sq.m of cultural and sports activities as well as a 1,000 sq.m underground parking facility.

Project: Urban requalification of the rail-way station area in Monthey (Lausanne)

Client: Municipality of Monthey

Partners: Arch. Emilio Puglielli, Ing. Martino Pirella

Assistants: Marta Burrai, Giorgia Castellani, Livia Porro, Pietro Zampetti.

Timeline: Jan - Apr 2009

Descrizione:

This project involved the requalification of the area through a unitary plan capable of valoris-ing the Municipality’s new “urban gateway”, creating the complex programme described in the call for tenders. Plans included a new rail-way station, a 650 sq.m bus station, 4,500 sq.m of office space, 1,500 sq.m of shops, 4,000 sq.m of parking space, public facilities and 6,500 sq.m of gardens. The entire project was respectful of plans to restrict the area to pedestrians.

Project: The new Pres Grange residential neighbourhood in Corsier (Gene-va)

Client: Municipality of Corsier

Assistants: Livia Porro, Pietro Zampetti.

Timeline: Jan - Apr 2010

Program: Residential 3500 mq, commercial 500 mq, underground parking.

Description: The project proposes a solution

for connecting Maison Neuve and the village through a network of pedestrian and cycling paths that would link the two chosen places for social cohesion. The two locations were the new square, as a centre of aggregation and trade, to-wards Maison Neuve, and the courtyard, aimed at a more individualist and contemplative dimen-sion on the side of the village. The style for this complex proposes a modern and international appearance, certainly not in order to contrast the picturesque charm of Corsier’s architecture, but rather as a comparison to its historic value.

Project: New middle school in Caslano (Lugano)

Client: Municipality of Caslano

Partners: Arch. Sarah Lollini, Arch. Luigi Va-lenza

Timeline: Oct - Dec 2011 first phase Apr - Aug 2012 second phase

Description: This projects was based on the following objectives: creating an

homogeneous and rational integration of a sig-nificantly large (4,500 square metres) public building within a residential area while ensuring it would become an element of aggregation for the entire community; satisfying the architectural requirements needed to ensure the functioning of a well organised school (interaction between the interior and the exterior, clear and fluid dis-tribution of areas); obtaining the highest level of flexibility to deal with possible future transfor-mations; the organisation of the construction in order to integrate large open areas in the project.

Project: New nursery and primary school in Matera

Client: Municipality of Matera

Partners: Arch. Sarah Lollini, Arch. Sergio Lamacchia

Timeline: Oct - Dec 2014

Description: The new building fallows the main direction of the lot, which allow a good sun orientation to the three

main volumes. Each volume hosts a different functional block: primary classes in the South Est one, nursery classes in the South West one and gym, cafeteria and offices in the North one. All volumes are characterized by great openings through the favoured facades, while the ones along the streets are very closed. A central cov-ering links the three volumes with two opposite entrances on the route between Dante Alighieri and Nazionale streets, forming a wide and wel-coming hall. Large open spaces are well distrib-uted between sport and ricreational activities.

Project: New residential building in Fiu-micino (Rome)

Client: Mrs. Daniela Filacchioni

Partners: Arch. Sarah Lollini e Marco Ciam-pa

Assistants: Arch. Filippo Cioccetti

Timeline: Dec 08 - Feb 09 feasibility studiesFeb - Sep 2009 concept design

Description: The project envisages the con-

struction of a 500 sq.m building composed of six small apartments and an underground parking. The design’s rationality was determined by the small size of the allowed coverage area, and is in clear contrast with a confused and heterogene-ous urban context. The plan expresses selective rigour with regard to the surrounding landscape, providing large openings only when correspond-ing to the few pleasant views.

Project: Refurbishing of the Franklin hotel in London

Client: GreenWood ltd.

Partners: Arch. Sarah Lollini, Marco Ciampa

Timeline: Apr - Jul 10 feasibility studies

Description: The Franklin Hotel, located on 22–28 Egerton Gardens, is a five star hotel with 39 keys, of which 2 are suites. The property has

five floors above ground and one basement lev-el for a total surface of 22.392 sq.ft. Our task, undertaken for a group of entrepreneurs inter-ested in buying the building, was to complete the refurbishing started by the previous owner. The focus of the refurbishment was to optimise the Franklin’s location overlooking the expanse of private gardens to the rear while increas-ing the hotel’s operating potential by intro-ducing an uncluttered and very stylish interior.

Project: Extension of a farmhouse in Calvi, Umbria

Client: Mr. Luca Villoresi

Consultants: Eng. Andrea Trabattoni structures

Timeline: giu - ott 2013 progettazione gen - set 2014 direzione lavori

Cost: 300.000 €

Description: The project involved 100 sq.m

enlargement of a traditional stone farmhouse in the Umbrian countryside, aimed at equipping the house with a large living room as well as an appropriate entrance hall and an independent guest cottage. The guest cottage was built at a lower level below the main house in order to use its roof as a terrace, thereby providing the garden of the main house with the space lost in adding the new living room. It was very interest-ing to address the ethical aesthetic and artisanal complexity of adding a modern wing to a tradi-tional building.
