THE CITY #THECITY#
This pearl of the Mediterranean is a minicontinent in its own right. Mallorca’s variedscenery has made the island a dream placefor film-makers and advertisers. You cansee the variety for yourself through thewindscreen of your hire car. Within 20minutes, you can drive from the capitalPalma to sensationally beautifulValldemossa in the mountains to thenorth-west, the village where thecomposer Frederic Chopin lived with hissweetheart, the authoress George Sand.Drive another 10 minutes, and you are inthe village of Deià, former home of thepoet Robert Graves. If you go southeast ofPalma, you will find a picturesque fishingidyll and magnificent fjord-like bays nearthe village of Portopetro 45 minutes away.A slice of the West Indies in Mallorca – thevast beach of Es Trenc – lies a few miles tothe west. Head north, towards Capdepera, and you will be amazed by the mediaevalcastle built on a city wall. Golden sandybeaches are flanked by lofty mountains, straight out of “The Fellowship of theRing”. The golf courses gleam, and the seais deepest turquoise. Everywhere there areforts, monasteries, treasures, myths andlegends.

SineuIn Mallorca’s centre lies the oldest villageof all – Sineu – where once the King lived.Being right at the centre of the islandmeant there was a chance of getting awayif the island was taken over by pirates. Forover a thousand years, farmers have beencoming here with their cows, bulls, horses, sheep, dogs, asses, mules, ducks, hens
and swans to market each Wednesday.
SollerThe inhabitants of Soller lived for centurieshidden in a valley behind a huge row ofmountains. It was so hard to climb themountain chain that people preferred to goto Palma by boat. And if they were on aboat anyway, why not go to France? Sollerbecame tri-lingual – Mallorcan, Spanishand French. In 1911 a tunnel was dugthrough the mountains, so finally thepeople of Soller could get in touch withtheir own island. The wonderful little trainis still there today.

Twoareas are specially handy – next to thehuge Corte Inglés department store nearPlaza España, or next to the old city centreby the little Corte Inglés on Jaime lll. Thebroad avenues around Plaza España haveeverything from local curio shops selling tinsoldiers, to specialists selling Serrano ham.Ladies who want to buy clothes head forthe large Corte Inglés store, where Mango,Zara, Beschka, Stradivarius, Women’sSecret and all the other boutiques lie cheekby jowl. More exciting, and packed withsmall boutiques and designer names, is thearea behind Bar Bosch right opposite thenew H&M shop in central Palma by PlazaJoan Carlos l. Have a look at the Cornerboutique or Miró Jeans, for example, nextto the plaza. The best market is to befound in Sineu on Wednesdays. If you areshort of time and want to see everything,
