Lunchtime Concerts at St Catherine of Italy This sixth season of lunchtime concerts brings together some of our Islands’ more established performers, presenting a series of chamber concerts which have gained a regular audience of locals and tourists alike. 10, 11, 12 JuneGħanafest- Malta Mediterranean Folk Music FestivalCelebrating the folk music heritage of the Mediterranean. Besides għana (Maltese folksong), the festival presents a selection of local ensembles, Maltese songwriters and folk musicians from Mediterranean countries or countries that influenced music in this region. This year the international guests for Għanafest are: Nakaira from Sicily, Navà Ensemble Persian music and Swing a la Turc quartet from Turkey. Għanafest also hosts a series of workshops on traditional instruments and a special programme for children. A wonderful event for the whole family

1 – 10 AprilPupu fil-BaħarA play by Alfred Sant, produced by KAST Productions and directed by Carmel S. Aquilina, featuring Antonella Galea Loffreda, Charles Sammut and Joe Galea. Since its inception in 2001, KAST has become synonymous with innovative theatrical adaptations of literary masterpieces in English and Maltese. KAST works through the process of collective creation, where the actors and director together construct an original script based on improvisation and creative writing inspired by the chosen literature. Alfred Sant’s collection of twelve narratives is the focus of this theatrical work that oscillates between characters living on the verge of society, middle-class mentality and the complexity of human relationships, with an underlying sardonic look at everyday life and characters. The play will be performed in Maltese.Venue: St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta.Time: 20.00 hrs.

8 – 10, 15 – 17 AprilMrs Warren’s ProfessionThis classic by George Bernard Shaw presented by MADC and directed by Joyce Grech, is the story of a mother and daughter with clashing views about a highly lucrative but unethical business. Cast: Isabelle Warrington, Barry Calvert, Colin Willis, Simone Spiteri, Andrew Galea and Chris Hudson. The play will be performed in English.Venue: Teatru Manoel, Valletta.Time: 20.00 hrs.

16 and 17 AprilThe TwitsA highly interactive play, based on the story by Roald Dahl. Mr. and Mrs. Twit are ugly, dirty, smelly and downright nasty, yet ingenious at playing mean tricks on each other. They become allies only when they are catching birds for bird pies or training their monkeys for their dream upside down Monkey Circus. The Twits is performed in English and is aimed at a young audience of 6 - 12 years. Produced and directed by Isabelle Gatt, with musical arrangements and vocal coaching by Sigo. 29 April – 8 MayOleannaA play produced by Stewsoft Productions, Oleanna is a two-hander by David Mamet, about the power struggle between a university professor and one of his female students who accuses him of sexual exploitation and, by doing so, spoils his chances of being accorded tenure. 7 and 8 MayBogħod mill-Għajn A play by Vincent Vella, presented by Teatru Manoel in collaboration with Maleth, and directed by Alan Fenech. The play gives insight into the family life of one of the ‘internati’ and a series of incidents encountered within the socio-political background of Malta during the Second World War. The play will be performed in Maltese.Venue: Teatru Manoel, Valletta.Time: 20.00 hrs.

13 – 29 MayThe Opposite SexA comedy produced by TNT Productions. A chance meeting between friendly couples takes an unexpected twist of fate. It is not long before what should have been a friendly dinner party turns into a social nightmare. As the common denominator between the characters starts to become clearer, the air soon become thick with insults, black eyes and broken chins. Venue: St James Cavalier Centre for Creativity, Valletta.Time: 20.00 hrs.

14 and 15 May It-Tifla li Waqgħet Ġo KtiebA play in Maltese adapted by Trevor Zahra from The Boy Who Fell into a Book by Alan Ayckbourn. As Marica reads before

going to sleep, she suddenly finds herself falling into the action with her superhero with whom she journeys through her entire shelf of books, meeting different characters that overlap into each other’s worlds flitting from one adventure to the next. The play is aimed at a young audience of 5 to 10 years, yet is a delight for all the family. Directed by Marcelle Theuma, musical arrangements and vocal coaching by Sigo; produced by Isabelle Gatt. 20 – 22 MayThe Rose Tattoo A play by Tennessee Williams, directed by Albert Marshall and presented by Teatru Manoel in collaboration with the Malta Drama Centre and the US Embassy. The Rose Tattoo is the story of an Italo-American widow in Louisiana who, following her husband’s death, withdraws from society and expects her daughter to do likewise. He is also fascinated by the deep blue tones of the Mediterranean Sea, evident by the palette he employs to convey his visual messages. The artist describes his work as a continuous narrative of his inner feelings, thoughts and comments, imbued with social as well as cultural influences represented in the form of a creative visual research journey. 15 April – 15 May Photography exhibition by Guillem VidalThe exhibition brings together a collection of 25 photographs depicting three distinct landscapes: the salt marshes of Malta, the port of Barcelona and the caves of Menorca. Common to all of them is the sea and nature. The recurring theme of the bridge is not there by chance as the photographs are part of a larger retrospective by the artist, called Passages.

Patrick Fenech, and is curated by Patrick Fenech, Vince Briffa and Lisa Gwen Baldacchino. The festival showcase the works of 12 local artists, the Valletta community and is aimed at engaging students from various schools in Malta and Gozo to appreciate fine art photography and to learn how to ‘read’ photographs. The festival will be held in various indoor and outdoor venues around Valletta. Supported by the Malta Arts Fund.
