Simplified shopping for multi-tasking mamas

There is a reason why Christmas is referred to as the Silly Season, and it’s not just because kids get hyped up on candy canes.

It’s because Mama’s realise how much work is involved in making the perfect Christmas, and it makes us a bit delirious and in need of a lie down and glass of wine.

Here’s my top four tips to surviving the silly season:

1. Write the mother of all lists: you need to get organised now. Don’t like writing lists? Too bad: Santa writes his naughty/nice list each year, so if it’s good enough for him, it’s good enough for us. Think about the big ticket items: where (your place, in-law’s place, beach); what (lunch, dinner, BBQ); and who (friends, relatives).

2. Learn the brutal art of delegation: What can you ask other people to bring? If Christ-mas is at your place, then you should do the major meat dish (chook, ham, terducken) but rello’s can bring everything else. Ask rich Aunty Mary to bring the prawns, and since Nanna has been making the pudding since 1932 it would be unfair to deny her the opportunity again this year. Don’t ask them what they’d like to make: if you’re hosting, tell them what you need them to bring. Be polite though.

3.Shop ONLINE for everything (at Mama-doo of course): The big question on everyone’s lips (or at least the kids) – is what pre-sents will you buy? Gone are

the days of trudging around shopping centres for days to get your Christmas shopping done. Consider buying all your non-perishable groceries now. It will make it easier on your credit card as Christmas ap-proaches. When online shopping was invented it was like Santa gave busy Mama’s of the world a joint gift. Here you go ladies, he was saying, make yourself a cuppa and sit down.

4. Be like a boot camp instructor, DO IT NOW: If you can tick something off your list today then do it. Do not wait until the last minute. The last minute will be needed for a quiet drink. The trick to buying Christmas gifts online is to do it early. There is no-one more unpopular than the person who hands over an IOU, and the dismal excuse their gift didn’t arrive in time. Buy now and allow yourself time to receive your goodies, wrap them up, and leave the weeks before Christmas free to concentrate on fun things like decorating gingerbread and cleaning the house before your mother-in-law visits.

By the time kids are getting ready for early schooling, they are old enough to tell you what they want for Christmas. If mine are anything to go by, they want everything they see on TV, so I imagine there’s going to be a degree of disappointment at our house on Christmas Day. By this age children are trying on the adult world through imaginary play and pretending to be doctors and teachers and astronauts and superheroes, so dress-ups, costumes and props are a great gift.
