    What is communication?

    Communication is the process of sharinginformation,ideas,concepts and messages between two or

    more persons.First,communication of what is in the mind, takes placethrough a medium.

    e.g.interviewer,painter,music composer.

    Second,communication is a two way process.Third,there is no limit to the number of media that can beused for communication.

    Effective communication involves more than words andmeaning.The major factors involved in effective communicationare;Levels of communication:

    Intrapersonal ,interpersonal,organizational and masscommunication.Internal filters:Selective exposure-denying information to themselves andconsequently to others.Selective perception-Refers to hearing and seeing what wewant to.Selective retention-To remember pleasant events andforget unpleasant ones.

    R eceiver's background:Effective communication depends on the knowledge of the

    background of the audience or receiver- position,education,relevant needs,subjectknowledge,attitudes,opinions.Feedback:Receiver's reaction to the communicator's message-verbal

    or non-verbal,positive or negative decides the effectivenessof communication.Determines whether interpretation of message by thereceiver is as intended by the communicator.

    Feedback:Silence and listening are two common forms of feedback in spoken communication.Usually these forms of feedback can be interpreted only inrelation to the listener's facial expression.Silence can be a sign of acceptance,an expression of disapproval and anger or it can be used to indicatedissociation with what is said.

    A dramatic pause,which is a form of deliberate silence canalso be used by a speaker to give force or effect to what heis saying.

    Listening actually consists of four activities on the part of the listener,First,the listener has to hear what the speaker is saying andnote his facial expressions,gestures and tone carefully.

    Second,he has to understand the words used by the speaker and go beyond them and comprehend the implied meaningof his words.
