DISCOVERIESNational Left-Handed Day
Was August 13Studies suggest that 10% of
men and 13% of women areleft-handed. Their uniqueness iscelebrated each year on August 13.
• Left handed men may makemore money
According to studies, lefthanded males who have gone touniversity earn 13% more thantheir right handed counterparts. However, it’s quite different forwomen, with lefties earning 5%less than women who are righthanded.
• You could die soonerAccording to a study lefties live
around nine years less than theirright-handed counterparts.Unlucky.
• Higher risk of insomnia, psychosis and alcoholism
South-paws are more prone tohave allergies and migraines, andresearch suggests that they are alsomore likely to become alcoholics. It’s because the right side of thebrain has a lower tolerance toalcohol. Also, Yale Universityresearchers concluded that around40 % of schizophrenic patientswere left-handed, with theoriessuggesting that brain lateralityplays a role
• Creative powerhousesLefties are better at
multi-tasking and make especially
good sportsmen. Lefties also tendto be drawn to careers in the arts, music and culture fields. Testsfound that there are moreleft-handed people with IQs over140 than right-handed people.Famous left-handed intellectualsinclude Albert Einstein, IsaacNewton, Charles Darwin, andBenjamin Franklin.

around 1447 English words typedsolely with the left hand, whereasonly 187 are typed with the right.
• Left-handed people scareeasier
In a horror movie experiment,left-handers who watched aneight-minute clip from The Silenceof the Lambs showed more fearthan right-handers. Scientistsbelieve that this may be becausethe right side of the brain isdominant in lefties and is moreinvolved in fear responses.
