Certain outfits paid BD50 as reward to entice Bahraini youth

to kill policemen and commit acts of terror in the Kingdom, said Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa yesterday, reviewing the anti-terror operations in the Kingdom in 2017.

Displaying envelopes to the audience during a meeting held at the Interior Ministry’s Officer Club in Gudaibiya, the minister said: “BD50 were kept in each of these envelopes. Heavy casualties

Kabul

Gunmen in army uniforms who stormed Kabul’s

Intercontinental Hotel late on Saturday and battled Afghan Special Forces through the night killed more than 30 people and wounded many more, although the final toll of dead and wounded may still be higher.

Wahid Majroh, a spokesman for the ministry of public health, said that 19 bodies had been brought into city hospitals, with six

identified as foreigners. However a senior Afghan

security official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media, said the death toll was over 30 and might climb higher. The dead included hotel staff and guests as well as members of the security forces who fought the attackers.

All five attackers were also killed, interior ministry spokesman Najib Danesh said.

The raid was the latest in a series of attacks that have underlined the city’s vulnerability and the ability of militants to mount high-profile operations aimed at undermining confidence in the Western-backed government.

More than 150 guests were able to flee as parts of the building caught fire, with some shimmying down sheets tied together and dropped from windows and others rescued by Afghan forces.

Local airline Kam Air said around 40 of its pilots and air crew, many of whom are

foreigners, were staying in the hotel and as many as 10 had been killed. Local media reports said the dead included Venezuelans and Ukrainians.

Zamari Kamgar, the airline’s deputy director, said it was still trying to locate staff. The Taliban, which attacked the same hotel in 2011, claimed responsibility for the attack, its spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.

A statement from the interior ministry put the blame on the Haqqani network, a group affiliated with the Taliban that is notorious for its attacks on urban targets.

Abdul Rahman Naseri, a guest who was at the hotel for a conference, was in the hall of the hotel when he saw four gunmen dressed in army

uniforms.“They were shouting in

Pashto (language), ‘Don’t leave any of them alive, good or bad’. ‘Shoot and kill them all,’ one of them shouted,” Naseri said.

“I ran to my room on the second floor. I opened the window and tried to get out using a tree but the branch broke and I fell to the ground. I hurt my back and broke a leg.”

Even after officials said the attack was over, sporadic gunshots and explosions could be heard from the site.

Thick smokeAs day broke yesterday, thick clouds of black smoke poured from the building, an imposing 1960s structure

set on a hilltop and heavily protected like most public buildings in Kabul.

The Intercontinental is one of two main luxury hotels in the city and had been due to host an information technology conference on Sunday. More than 100 IT managers and engineers were on site when the attack took place, said Ahmad Waheed, an official at the telecommunications ministry.

Danesh said a private company had taken over responsibility for security at the hotel three weeks ago and there would be an investigation into possible failings, just days after a U.S. embassy warning of possible attacks on hotels in Kabul. (Reuters)

The dramatic moment when people tried to escape the siege of the Intercontinental Hotel in Kabul, Afghanistan, has been captured on camera. The hostages can be seen fleeing to safety as the hotel building burns. People are seen trying to climb down from upper floors of the building using what appear to be knotted bed sheets during the long-lasting siege and fire at the Intercontinental Hotel in the Afghan capital.

Information Affairs Minister Ali bin Mohammed Al Romaihi

has denounced the recurrent Houthi attacks targeting cities in Saudi Arabia.

“The Iran-made ballistic missile attacks are a dangerous escalation aimed at undermining the security of the Kingdom, the Gulf and the Arab countries,” the minister told Al Sharq Al Awsat daily, adding that the Houthi attacks were a flagrant violation of all international and humanitarian conventions and morals.

Al Romaihi praised the Royal Saudi Air Defence Forces, their advanced systems and the vigilance of the Saudi security and military services in thwarting Houthi terrorist attacks, including the interception recently of a ballistic missile launched by Iranian-backed Houthi terrorists targeting Najran populated city.

“It was a blatant breach of

international and humanitarian laws that proves the implication of Tehran and its terrorist proxies in threatening regional and global peace and security,” he added. The minister urged the international community to take a hard and decisive stance against the Houthi terrorism, and effective measures against Iran’s escalating violations and its breach of international law and norms.

The meeting was attended by the ministry’s senior officers,

governors of the Kingdom’s four governorates, public figures, religious scholars representing the different faiths and sects living in Bahrain, legislators, members of the press and notable personalities.

Role of Hezbollah The minister’s presentation revealed the terrorist groups busted in Bahrain were part of a bigger Iran-backed plot to establish the Bahraini branch of Hezbollah terrorist organisation.

The Lt. Gen. explained that the ministry launched a comprehensive operation to gather information about the active organisations and their members, in coordination with the National Security Agency and other security agencies.

He said these efforts contributed in foiling several attacks and exposing more terrorists, who led to the same leaders abroad.

“This operation continued for several months and even as it was on, some terrorist incidents occurred such as the oil pipeline blast in Buri in November. The cells are run by individuals in Iran who coordinate with the Iranian Revolutionary Guards, the Popular Mobilisation Forces in Iraq and the Iraqi and Lebanese branches of Hezbollah to train terrorists,” the minister told the audience.

“These terror operations in the Kingdom are managed and run by certain individuals and their activities are not only limited to this operation but also cover previous cases as well. Those persons would be held accountable and if the countries they are living in do not cooperate with the Interpol and ignore

the Red Notice or bilateral coordination, then those individuals will have no civil rights or right to stay among us. After a vigorous operation, the targets were identified and classified according to the dangers they posed. Thereafter, a security plan was put in place to target the sources of risks and threats to the homeland on the security map,” he said, displaying the photographs of the terrorists involved in various terror acts.

Security eventsWhile the audience listened in shock, the minister shared some of the main security-related events and achievements in 2017.

He began with the jailbreak from the Rehabilitation and Reformation Centre

in Jau, commonly known as Jau prison, on the first day of the year.

Ten prisoners jailed for their involvement in terror crimes escaped prison on January 1 and a policeman was killed in a shootout during the escape.

The minister made a presentation which highlighted last year’s major terrorist occurrences that resulted in the martyrdom of a number of security forces’ members. This included the assassination of First Lieutenant Hisham Al Hammadi in February, killing of policemen Abdulsamad Haji and Salman Anjam in two separate attacks on a police patrol vehicles in Diraz and Jidhafs in June and October, and the terrorist attack on an oil pipeline in Buri in November.

Iran-backed Hezbollah aided terror groups

The identity of Bahrain has been impacted by the events of 2011,

said Interior Minister Lieutenant General Shaikh Rashid bin Abdulla Al Khalifa, emphasising on moderation and combatting sectarianism and extremism as directed by His Majesty King Hamad bin Isa Al Khalifa.

“There have been many efforts to include everyone and bring the situation under control. These efforts have been led by HM the King through his resolve to interact with the people. On many occasions, HM the King has highlighted that we are adopting a moderate approach and has called upon the people to free themselves from the isolation of sectarianism and extremism and progress towards nationalism,” he said, adding that it is a call for positivity and optimism.

‘The achievement of this national goal requires from us an effort to confront extremism, sectarianism and hatred. If we review HM the King’s reforms project, we realise it

is the largest national project that includes the approval of the National Action Charter, the drafting of the Constitution, the creation of the National Assembly and the endorsement of laws. In this major achievement we cannot find a single word that discriminates between one citizen and another,” the minister said.

Focussing on the dangers of targeting the “Bahraini identity”, he said that there are issues related to upbringing younger generations based on wrong doctrines, promotion of incitement, negative reports in the foreign media. “The tendency to promote incitement is an issue that should not recur. It spreads through political or religious speeches or the media. It has had a negative effect on the national identity and spirit. This issue should be kept under observation and control through the laws and regulations as well as the spirit of nationalism. For the upbringing at home and in schools,” he said.

Shaikh Rashid yesterday announced the constitution of an award as part

of the Interior Ministry’s nationalism project, an initiative to encourage the public to preserve the national identity

and social relations in Bahrain that was negatively effected by the events in the past seven years. The minister said more details on the award would be announced soon.

Information Technology adoption is a vital to help your business in an increasingly competitive world. Most of

the businesses recognize their growing dependence on technology to reap the benefits that cloud, mobility, big data, and security offer. Businesses are bombarded with new technologies and IT solutions claiming to be the answer to their business problems. So, are you asking the right questions to determine the best products for your business?

The below four key topics can help you find the right IT products for your business:

Increase in productivity

To compete and win, you must deliver more new services faster than ever. Legacy servers, storage and networking cannot drive the productivity your business needs to compete and win. When considering new products, choose servers, storage and networking that are designed for the speed, scale, reliability and simplicity you need and provide anytime, anywhere access to any device in your business.

Growth by acquiring new customers and retaining existing

You already have most of the data you need to personalize your customers’ experiences in the massive volumes of data you’ve accumulated. Business intelligence solutions can quickly turn massive volumes of data into market insights and allow you to target customer interactions, drive product innovation for an increased share of wallet, and create service offerings that engender loyalty. Look for a business intelligence solution that runs on infrastructure that easily scales, is simple to manage, and has the network bandwidth for both wired and wireless. The most efficient solutions include servers, storage and networking that are designed to work together. Reduce costs without compromising business

Not only can you maximize IT efficiency by carefully evaluating deployment, management, and maintenance costs, you can also look for flexible solutions are sized just right for your needs today and grow easily as your business demands. Choosing an affordable solution means it’s sized so you buy only what you need today, but is flexible and designed to easily scale and grow with your business. It may also have flexible leasing and purchase options.

Keep business running

As your business grows, your data becomes increasingly valuable—both to you and to cyber-criminals. Cloud and mobility—together with rapid growth, time and expertise constraints—translate to increased exposure to security threats. A cyber-attack can mean lost sales and customers, damage to your brand and reputation, investigation and forensics costs in addition to possible fines and penalties, legal costs, settlements and judgments. With the average cost of downtime running at BD 2,500.00 per minute, security becomes a key criteria for your business critical solutions. Choose solutions with built-in, proven reliability and comprehensive backup and recovery for both physical and virtual environments, as well as tools to ensure mobile devices are securely on-boarded, provisioned and quarantined.

Emerging entrepreneurship era

Batool Mohammed Dadabhai

By Invitation

The era of entrepreneurship has been dominating the clouds of the kingdom of Bahrain since the last couple of years in

a big way.In recent years I have witnessed that Bahrain has rapidly

grown in the field of producing entrepreneurs in every business with amazing projects and ideas. The concept of being an entrepreneur has become like a fashion that doesn’t seem to fade by. We have embraced this whole idea so gently that it has become second nature to every second graduate to open their own business with a creative personal touch of their own and go for the passion related field instead of a safe and sound corporate job opportunity.

Why would the new generation take this risk of putting all their energy into a business world where they have barely taken a few steps? Why not secure your future from an early stage with an income that is guaranteed?

I believe this is the confidence that our great nation and its families and culture that has given the new generation a lot of strength, courage, motivation and fascination, that many young people sense when they either graduate or even start before graduation.

There are many examples in Bahrain of these entrepreneurs that have proved their points through how popular they have become in a very short period. It is not always about money, it is their passion that derives them and takes them to the top where they stand out among many others and make success bold and bright. These young achievers have registered their companies, paid all the increased government fees over the years , fought through the recession and still kept their mark in the market, because they believe, where there is a will there is a way.

I can make a never ending list companies in different business in this content, but just to give you a small example, the Galleria mall in Zinj has around 8 outlets which are owned by Bahraini entrepreneurs . These companies have been created by Bahraini owners to make their passion come into reality. As I mentioned earlier, there are ample of such examples that can support the theory of the emerging entrepreneurship era.

I believe this original concept of coming up with your own business has spread world wide where entrepreneurs regardless of weather they are young or old have diversified the growth of the economy especially in countries that were depending mainly on oil and gas.

Jordan King tells Pence of concern

Amman

Jordan’s King Abdullah II on Sunday voiced

concern over Washington’s controversial recognition of Jerusalem as Israel’s capital, as US Vice President Mike Pence visited Amman during an uncomfortable Middle East tour.

Arab outrage over President Donald Trump’s decision to move the American embassy in Israel to Jerusalem had prompted the cancellation of several planned meetings ahead of Pence’s trip, originally scheduled for December.

Abdullah, a key US ally, said he had “continuously voiced over the past year... my concerns regarding the US decision on Jerusalem that does not come as a result of a comprehensive settlement

to the Palestinian Israeli conflict”.

“Jerusalem is key to Muslims and Christians as it is to Jews,” he added. “It is key to peace in the region. And key to enabling Muslims to effectively fight some of the root causes of radicalisation.”

Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967 and later annexed east Jerusalem in a move never recognised by the international community.

The US move to recognise the city as Israel’s capital

broke with decades of international consensus that the city’s status should be settled as part of a two-state peace deal between Israel and the Palestinians.

Israel claims all of Jerusalem as its united capital, while the Palestinians see the eastern sector as the capital of their future state.

Israelis and Palestinians alike interpreted Trump’s move as Washington taking Israel’s side in the dispute over the city.

Pence will head to Israel

later Sunday for a two-day visit, during which he can expect a warm welcome from Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and President Reuven Rivlin.

Pence -- a devout Christian -- will visit the Western Wall, one of the holiest Jewish sites in Jerusalem’s Old City, and pay his respects at the Yad Vashem Holocaust memorial.

He will also deliver a speech to Israel’s parliament on Monday. A coalition of Arab parties said Saturday it would boycott the address, calling Pence “dangerous and messianic”.

Turkish forces push into Syria, clash with Kurdish militiaAzaz, Syria

Turkish ground forces advanced into northern

Syria’s Afrin region on Sunday, Ankara said after launching artillery and air strikes on a U.S.-backed Kurdish militia it aims to sweep from its border.

The Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia, supported by the United States but seen as a terrorist organisation by Turkey, said it had repulsed the Turkish forces and their allies after fierce clashes.

Intense Turkish artillery fire and air strikes continued to hit some villages, the YPG said, and fierce battles raged to the north and west of Afrin against Turkish forces and their Syrian rebel allies, said Birusk Hasaka, the YPG spokesman in Afrin.

Turkey opened a new front in the nearly seven-year-old Syrian war on Saturday when, under what Ankara has called “Operation Olive Branch”, Turkish artillery and air strikes pounded YPG positions in Afrin.

Turkey is targeting the U.S.-backed fighters at a time when ties with ally Washington

appear close to breaking point.

Turkey sees the YPG as an extension of the outlawed Kurdistan Workers Party (PKK) which has carried out a deadly, three-decade insurgency in Turkey’s mainly Kurdish southeast. The United States is backing the YPG in Syria, seeing it as an effective

partner in the fight against Islamic State.

Prime Minister Binali Yildirim said the Turkish military, NATO’s second-largest, would create a 30-km (19-mile) “safe zone” in the region, according to broadcaster HaberTurk.

“Our jets took off and

started bombing. And now the ground operation is underway. Now we see how the YPG ... are fleeing in Afrin,” President Tayyip Erdogan said. “We will chase them. God willing, we will complete this operation very quickly.”

Around 25,000 Free Syrian Army rebels are taking part in the operation with the

goal of recapturing Arab towns and villages seized by the YPG almost two years ago, a rebel commander said.

Major Yasser Abdul Rahim said the rebels did not seek to enter the mainly Kurdish city of Afrin but encircle it and expel the YPG, which controls it. (Reuters)

You can’t rely on U.S. support to defeat Turkey: ErdoganIstanbul

Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan said yesterday

his forces would crush the U.S.-backed Syrian-Kurdish YPG militia, saying it could not rely on Washington’s support to defeat Turkey.

Speaking to a congress of

his ruling AK Party in the northwestern city of Bursa, Erdogan also accused some of Turkey’s allies of providing 2,000 plane shipments and 5,000 truckloads of weapons to the YPG, a comment that appeared aimed at the United States.

Fifa World Cup voting scandal reignited

Trump attacks Democrats, calls for ‘nuclear option’

Washington

As the second day of the US government shutdown

wore on, there appeared little sign of progress as both parties continued to blame each other in an increasingly fierce war of words.

Donald Trump used Twitter to urge Senate Republicans – who hold a slim majority – to end the impasse by taking the “nuclear option” if the “stalemate continues”.

Such a move would allow Republicans to pass legislation without Democratic support, by lowering the majority needed to pass a bill to just 51 votes. It is, however, not an option favoured by the GOP Senate leader, Mitch McConnell.

The president continued to blame Democrats for the shutdown, arguing that they were placing the nation’s borders under threat by opposing a short-term budget fix.

“The Dems just want illegal immigrants to pour into our nation unchecked,” Trump tweeted.

The remarks followed an aggressive Trump campaign advert released on Saturday, which accused Democrats opposing the president’s hardline immigration agenda of being “complicit in every murder committed by illegal immigrants”.

The Vermont senator Bernie Sanders condemned the ad.

“It is really unbelievable and so sad for our country that we have a president of the United States who says such nonsense and such outrageous statements,” Sanders told CNN’s State of the Union yesterday.

Sanders, an independent who caucuses with Democrats, is helping lead efforts to secure as part of funding talks safeguards for Dreamers, young undocumented migrants brought to the US who

gained protected status under the Obama administration that was rescinded by Trump.

Republicans have argued that as Trump set a March deadline for a resolution to the Dreamers issue, negotiations can continue after government funding is passed.

Although the president remained in Washington over the weekend, missing a gala event at his private members’ club in Florida to celebrate his first year in office, Trump faced criticism for failing to lead negotiations since the shutdown began.

News shows repeated Fox and Friends footage from 2013, when Republicans in Congress drove the last government shutdown, over their opposition to Barack Obama’s healthcare reform. (theguardian)

Shutdown ‘puts troops in danger’Washington

Republicans, from US President Donald

Trump on down, said the federal government shutdown puts America’s defences at risk, at odds with comments from the Pentagon chief that essential military efforts will continue unimpeded.

Democratic leaders, looking to shape the narrative of the shutdown, also warned of the impact on the military.

US Defence Secretary Jim Mattis, in a letter to

troops in anticipation of a shutdown, said daily operations around the world will continue and active forces would stay in their posts.

“Ships and submarines will remain at sea, our aircraft will continue to fly and our warfighters will continue to pursue terrorists throughout the Middle East, Africa and South Asia,” Mattis wrote in the memo to all defence personnel.

“Steady as she goes – hold the line. I know our

Nation can count on you.”Mattis even joked during

an event in Washington on Friday that “the submarine that put to sea last week will still be put to

sea for three months and God bless them, the lads will not have any email connectivity” so they won’t know what lawmakers are up to. (Bloomberg)

The storm of controversy over the award of the 2018 and 2022

World Cups to Russia and Qatar is reignited, more than seven years after the votes, with the revelation that Qatar’s state TV company agreed a $100million payment to FIFA if they got the 2022 finals.

The claims are made in a new book by a whistleblower from inside Australia’s failed 2022 bid, Bonita Mersiades, who has spent years investigating the saga and conducted a recent confessional interview with former FIFA president Sepp Blatter about the process.

Blatter says he knew Qatar would win because Michel Platini told

him that he and multiple others on the 22-man voting ExCo panel were going to back the tiny state on the Arabian Peninsula. Blatter was subsequently dismayed with Qatar’s win and wanted them stripped of the tournament but says he did a deal — twice — to stop that happening, in exchange for Qatar’s Emir guarantee that Blatter would not face a 2011 FIFA presidential challenge from Qatar’s ExCo member Mohamed bin Hammam.

Blatter also describes the circumstances of the deals, one made in Doha in late 2010 and one in his FIFA office in Zurich in 2011.

The book says that in the months before the vote in December 2010

— with FIFA executives privately worried that a Qatar win would leave a financial shortfall for coffers in 2022 — broadcaster Al Jazeera

(now beIN Sports) agreed the secret deal to pay $100m if Qatar won the vote, which subsequently happened. (MailOnline)

Saudi urges oil producers to extend cooperation

Bahrain discusses cargo expansion plans with UPSManama

Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications Kamal

bin Ahmed received a delegation representing the United Parcel Service (UPS), in the presence of Bahrain Airport Company (BAC) Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Yousif Al Binfalah, and representatives from Bahrain Economic Board (EDB) and BAC.

They discussed UPS’s future plans in Bahrain, including the development of its cargo services at the Bahrain International Airport (BIA), and its aim to increase the volume of shipments to and from the country.

The Minister stressed the importance of cooperating with multinational logistics providers to help strengthen Bahrain’s strategic position as a leader in efficient and reliable logistic services in the GCC and wider Middle East.

The call came after a deal to cut output succeeded in shoring up oil pricesMuscat

Top oil exporter Saudi Arabia called yesterday

for extending cooperation between OPEC and non-OPEC producers beyond 2018, after a deal to cut output succeeded in shoring up prices.

The call, the first explicit invitation by Riyadh for long-term cooperation between oil producers, came with oil prices topping $70 a barrel thanks to the deal, after they dove below $30 a barrel in early 2016.

“We should not limit our efforts to 2018. We need to be talking about a longer framework for our cooperation,” Saudi Energy Minister Khaled al-Faleh told reporters before a meeting between ministers of OPEC and non-OPEC

countries in the Omani capital Muscat.

The meeting will be discussing levels of compliance to the cuts.

Oil producers from inside and outside the Organisation of Petroleum Exporting Countries signed a landmark agreement in November 2016 to cut output by 1.8 million barrels per day to fight oversupply and lift sagging prices.

That deal was initially for six months, but the 14-member cartel and 10 independent producers have since extended it until the end of this year.

Officials from the participating countries have been talking about whether they should quit the agreement altogether or just have another extension depending on the

market situation.But the Saudi minister

said the agreement should be extended for an unspecified duration.

“I am talking about extending the framework that we started -- which is the declaration of cooperation -- beyond 2018,” Faleh told reporters.

‘We must not relax’ Faleh however said the new

framework for cooperation might differ from the current agreement and its production quotas.

“It does not necessarily mean sticking barrel by barrel” to the same agreement.

It would mean “assuring stakeholders, investors, consumers and the global community that (the agreement) is here to stay.”

It would send the message that “we are going to work together not only with the 24 countries, but inviting more and more participants,” he said.

Faleh said oil producers had not yet achieved their target of reducing world stocks to normal levels and striking a balance between supply and demand.

He called for efforts to

continue to bring inventories to “normal levels”.

“That objective has not been achieved. We are not close to achieving it,” said Faleh, adding that a rebalance is unlikely in the first half of 2018.

Russian Energy Minister Alexander Novak said oil producers should not ease off on their efforts despite the rebound. (AFP)

The project, which the minister said was ordered by King Salman in a royal decree, is expected to be completed in less than 18 months

The plants will have capacity of 240,000 cubic meters of water per day and will help government-owned Saudi Saline Water Conversion Corp (SWCC) raise production efficiency and cut operating and capital costs

No details of funding the project was given but Saudi Arabia had said in 2016 that it planned to use public-private partnerships (PPP) with local and foreign companies to fund infrastructure projects.

In August, Saudi Arabia said it would develop resorts on about 50 Red Sea islands, completing the first phase of that project - which is backed by its Public Investment Fund (PIF) - in the fourth quarter of 2022.

Alba scoops syndicated loan deal of 2017 Manama

Aluminium Bahrain B.S.C. (Alba), the home-base of

Line 6 Expansion Project, was the proud recipient of the Syndicated Loan of the Year category at the Bonds, Loans and Sukuk Middle East Awards which has taken place on Wednesday December 7, 2017 at the Ritz Carlton, Dubai.

The award recognized the Company’s efforts to secure the largest-ever-loan in October 2016, US$ 1.5 billion Syndicated Loan (first tranche of funding), to come-out of Bahrain to fund Line 6 Expansion Project.

Speaking on this occasion, the Deputy Chief Executive Officer Ali Al Baqali said:

“We are much pleased to secure the largest corporate loan in the

history of Bahrain. We are even more proud to have executed the US$ 1.5 billion syndicated loan at attractive pricing with a select group of international, regional and local banks.”

Alba brought 23 banks on board for this dual-tranche facility that was upsized by a factor of two and saw attractive pricing with over US$ 2 billion commitments in line with the Bahrain blue-chip corporates. This facility comprised two tranches: a US Dollar-denominated senior unsecured conventional term-loan facility (the Conventional Facility) of US$ 882 million and a US Dollar-denominated senior Shari’ah-compliant facility (the Islamic Facility) of US$ 618 million. KPMG discusses the impact of VATKPMG in Bahrain participated in a panel discussion, organized by the CFA Society Bahrain to discuss the introduction of Value-added Tax (VAT) in the Kingdom.

Senior accounting and finance professionals from banks, insurance companies, and large corpora-

tions obtained from KPMG experts further valuable insight on the impact of the proposed new tax system on their businesses and the impact it would have on the overall economic landscape in Bahrain.

“The introduction of VAT at a 5 per cent rate would lead to changes for the local business

landscape. Bahrain has always been known as a tax-free economy although levies and charges have always been present. The introduction of a consump-tion tax on most goods and services will inevitably require an updated approach to the way of interacting with business partners and final consumers. There is continuous risk for business disruption and reputational damage if VAT is not managed effectively prior to introduction and beyond go-live. It is vital that organi-zations utilize the time leading towards VAT roll out, expected by the second half of 2018, to evaluate the impact of VAT on their operations and take all measures to ensure a smooth roll-into VAT throughout the whole services’ supply chain.”

“Managing accounts and monitor-ing VAT in all transactions is not an easy task but can be handled efficiently with a tailored Control

Framework and specific VAT procedures and processes that are adhered to by all stake-holders in the business, and not just Finance. Having a technology-enabled processes, whether by upgrading existing Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) systems or careful-ly rolling out add-on tools embedded in the overall digital strategy of the organization, is a must-do to ensure accurate tax reporting, avoid financial penalties and navigate govern-ment requirements”

Airbus to get ‘10 years of

visibility’ Paris

A $16 billion deal with Emirates airline for A380

superjumbos will give Airbus “at least 10 years of visibility”, the European manufacturer’s CEO Tom Enders said in an interview published yesterday.

Emirates announced the deal on Thursday to buy 36 Airbus A380s - just days after the group said it would have to halt production without new orders.

The deal is “excellent news” and “a sign of confidence on the part of a company that has built its strategy on growth around the plane”, Enders told France’s Journal du Dimanche newspaper.

It “gives us at least 10 years of visibility.”

Emirates said it had placed firm orders for 20 of the double-decker aircraft with options for a further 16. Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2020.

The airline is already the world’s biggest customer for the A380 with 101 in its fleet and 41 more firm orders previously placed.

Airbus hopes that by continuing the programme for the next 10 years or even beyond, potential customers of the A380 will decide to order the aircraft, especially in China.

The group’s decision in 2007 to pursue the A380, capable of packing in 853 seats, was diametrically opposed to rival Boeing’s bet

on the Dreamliner, marketed as a more efficient plane that could be used for both medium and long-distance flights.

But the economics of the four-engine A380 have proved daunting, with airlines having to operate every flight at full capacity in order to make a profit.

Airbus sales director John Leahy had said on Monday that the company would have to halt the A380 programme unless Emirates placed another order.

Enders, 59, told the Airbus board of directors last month that he would not seek reappointment as CEO when his current term ends in April. (AFP)

Most Middle Eastern stock markets fell yesterday

with Saudi Arabia pulling further away from a major resistance level, although a surge by fuel distributor ADNOC Distribution buoyed Abu Dhabi.

The Saudi index slipped 0.3 per cent to 7,513 points, retreating from the July peak of 7,586 points.

Dairy company Almarai dropped 1.2pc after reporting fourth-quarter net profit of 513 million riyals ($137m), down from 536m riyals a year ago and below forecasts of 549m riyals by SICO Bahrain and 531m riyals by NCB Capital.

It blamed a 2.6pc decline in revenue on the loss of sales to Gulf and export countries, in an apparent reference to the embargo on Qatar.

Savola, Saudi Arabia’s largest food producer and a

major shareholder in Almarai, slid 2.2pc. Saudia Dairy and Foodstuff Co fell 1.6pc after reporting a 14pc decline in quarterly profit, as sales shrank slightly.

In Dubai, the index fell 0.5pc as most property developers weakened, with DAMAC down 1.7pc.

Union Properties, however, edged up 0.4pc after saying it had sold its entire stake in district cooling firm Emicool to Dubai Investments, already the owner of the other 50pc, for 500m dirhams ($136m). Dubai Investments edged down 0.4pc.

Abu Dhabi’s index rose 0.2pc on the back of a 3pc gain by ADNOC Distribution to 2.73 dirhams. On Thursday, Goldman Sachs initiated the stock with a “buy” rating and a 12-month price target of 3.31 dirhams.

Qatar’s index dropped 0.6pc

as Qatar National Bank, the biggest lender, fell 1.4pc. QNB’s loan growth is expected to fall back to between 7 and 9pc in 2018 from around 12pc in 2017, analysts said at the end of last week after an investor relations conference call with

(Jan 21st - Feb 19th)

(Feb 20th - Mar 20th)

If you’ve been thinking about starting a garden, this is a great day to do it, since anything relating to the land you begin today is likely to thrive. Doubts about your financial security might be on your mind. They’re probably misplaced, because you should continue to do well.

Family and friends may gather for an intimate get-together at your home or perhaps at the home of a neighbour. At some point, expect an exciting phone call. You should be feeling pretty secure in relationships of all kinds, from business partnerships to close friends to love partners. Information provided by someone else could give you some ideas.

A close friend or lover could share a secret with you today. An older person could be in the news, perhaps an author or politician you particularly admire. You, yourself, could feel inspired to work on a creative project of some kind, although the downside might be that you keep working at it for too long and could well exhaust yourself. Remember to take breaks.

Someone you’ve known for a long time but haven’t seen for a while could suddenly come back into the picture. He or she could attend a social event of some kind or actually drop in to visit your family. Friendships and group affiliations could prove supportive and satisfying right now and you should feel pretty secure with them.

Today you and your family or a group of friends might spend most of the day out and about. You might spend the day outdoors, or possibly attend a concert or festival of some kind. This should be a very happy day for you, as you’re likely to be feeling especially close to those around you. Your relationships appear to be quite secure, as does your career and financial situation.

A class, lecture, or workshop could prove fascinating and stimulating for you today. Plans for travel to a distant state or foreign country, perhaps in the company of friends or family members, could be confirmed, which should make you feel really good! Your relationships seem warm, supportive, and stable, even those with people who live far away from you. Have fun!

If you’ve been thinking of buying a home or otherwise purchasing real estate, this is the day to start the ball rolling or finalize the deal, depending on your situation. Investments in property planned at this time should continue to increase steadily in value. However, make sure this is the right investment for you before committing to anything.

A festive social event could either start or consolidate a love relationship, which could last for a long time. New and interesting people could come into your life, bringing stimulating conversation and useful information. Someone you haven’t seen for a while could also appear on the scene, making for a joyful reunion.

A warm and loving communication could come today from a longtime friend or romantic partner. This could be the high point of your day, especially since a letter or delivery you’ve been waiting on for a while still might not come. An older relative or neighbour might come to your door wanting advice about something.

Today you should be experiencing a strong feeling of satisfaction and contentment with your life. Business and financial matters continue to go well, and your home life especially appears to be secure and stable. You might be considering investing some of your resources in your home. Any new romantic relationships begun at this time could well last for a long time.

Business transactions taking place in your near neighbourhood should prove sensible and satisfying today. You should be feeling pretty financially secure right now, as career and money matters continue to go well for you. Contact with friends, neighbours, and relatives should be open, congenial, and honest. Relationships of all kinds are apt to be pretty stable. In the evening, take a brisk walk near your home.If you’re into gardening or in any way working with the land, you’re likely to spend a lot of time doing it today. A friend or family member could help. Anything planted today is likely to grow and thrive, so don’t worry about seeds that don’t sprout. You might spend a bit too much time doing it, however. Work only until you’re pleasantly tired, then quit for the day.

Colombo

Sri Lankan police who were charged by

elephants as they staked out a cannabis farm dropped an automatic rifle as they ran for their lives, sparking a hunt yesterday for the missing weapon.

Policemen who had been camping out near the plantation in a bid to catch crooks turned tail and scarpered after the huge creatures started hurtling after them.

“The constables dropped

their weapons and fled to save their lives when the elephants charged,” a statement said.

Officers were now looking for the T56 automatic assault rifle in the bush at Lunugamvehera, 225 kilometres (140 miles) south of the capital Colombo.

Sri Lanka has strict laws protecting elephants, which are considered sacred. However, about 200 jumbos are killed annually by farmers who say wild elephants stray onto their land and destroy their crops. (AFP)

A California man’s daily sushi habit ended in

a trip to hospital with a stomach-churning item to show doctors: a 1.6-metre tapeworm that “wiggled” out of his body.

Fresno emergency department doctor Kenny Banh said he was sceptical when the man walked in to his hospital, asking for treatment for a worm.

But when the patient opened a plastic bag, the “giant” parasite was inside,

wrapped around a toilet roll.“Apparently it was still

wriggling when he put it in the bag but it had died in transit,” Banh said.

The patient, whose identity has not been revealed, told the doctor that during a bout of bloody diarrhoea he looked down and thought a piece of his intestine was hanging from his behind.

When the man pulled on it and it kept coming out, he realised it was moving and must be a worm. (theguardian)

Seoul

South Korea went into swoon mode yesterday

-- at the feet of a party apparatchik from the North.

Hyon Song-Wol is, however, no dourly-dressed, suit-wearing bureaucrat from the nuclear-armed nation, but the leader of Pyongyang’s most popular girl band.

Cameras followed her every move as the glamorous songstress swept through Seoul at the head of a North Korean delegation sent

to inspect performance venues for the Pyeongchang Olympic Games.

Wearing a fur muffler and exuding an air of confident calm, Hyun was unphased by the throng of cameras that followed her everywhere.

Believed to be in her late 30s or early 40s, Hyon is as close to a megastar as North Korea probably has.

Her “Excellent Horse-like Lady”, a term describing a smart and energetic woman was a big hit in the 2000s. (AFP)

Washington

A year after millions of women and men

demonstrated in cities around the globe in an extraordinary rebuke of Donald Trump, crowds returned to the streets on Saturday.

Tens of thousands turned out in Washington, New York, Los Angeles, Philadelphia and hundreds of other cities across the US and the world. Many women wore pink knit “pussy hats”, an enduring symbol of the Women’s March and the so-called “resistance” to Trump.

In Washington, where the federal government was shut down amid gridlock in Congress, the steps of the Lincoln Memorial were dotted with pink hats and handmade placards. A group of protesters held large block letters to spell “impeach”.

The rally stretched along the national mall towards the Washington monument. A few dozen daring protesters watched the rally from atop the frozen reflecting pool. Under a warm sun, the pool began to melt. Several people had to be fished from the icy water.

Crowds were generally upbeat, basking in the

sunshine. Activists said they were encouraged by a string of liberal victories in the past year, including the election of Democrats in state elections in Alabama and Virginia. But there was also a sense of challenges still ahead, especially as the 2018 congressional midterms approach.

“I think maybe there’s more anger this year,” said Liz Weiderhold, a teacher in Virginia who said she marched in Washington last year as well. “You can feel the pressure in the pressure cooker. We’re more exasperated now that he’s

been in office for more than a year and we’ve seen what a disaster it’s been.”

The 2017 protest touched off a year of political resistance to Trump’s presidency often led by women.

As speakers including the House minority leader, Nancy Pelosi, and Democratic senator Kirsten Gillibrand noted during their remarks to the Washington rally on Saturday, women are running for office in record numbers and aiding grassroots efforts to protest, flooding lawmakers with calls and emails. Women’s March marches on, one year later

Trump trolls marchersPresident Trump, in a

deft exercise of tweet-trolling, cheered on the Women’s March Saturday, urging participants to turn out in big numbers to celebrate a strong economy and low unemployment rate for women.

With the presidential tongue firmly implanted in cheek, he brushed aside the decidedly anti-Trump flavour of the marches and the anti-Trump signs that ranged from the humorous

to the profane. From his twitter perch,

Trump took a rosy posture toward the marches: “Beautiful weather all over our great country, a perfect day for all Women to March,” he tweeted. “Get out there now to celebrate the historic milestones and unprecedented economic success and wealth creation that has taken place over the last 12 months. Lowest female unemployment in 18 years!” (usatoday)

Thisara Perera starred with bat and ball as Sri Lanka ended

their recent dismal run by beating Zimbabwe by five wickets in the tri-nation one-day international

tournament yesterday.Perera claimed

four wickets to lead an

inspired Sri Lankan bowling attack that limited Zimbabwe to 198 all out before his unbeaten 39 helped the islanders to chase down their target in 44.5 overs.

Sri Lanka were in trouble at 145-5 before skipper Dinesh Chandimal (38 not out) and Perera put on an unbeaten 57-run stand for the sixth wicket.

Perera, who bats left-handed, sealed the win with a six to keep Sri Lanka’s tournament hopes alive after they lost against Zimbabwe and hosts Bangladesh.

Zimbabwe paceman Blessing Muzarabani claimed three wickets to

rattle the Sri Lankan top-order after opener Kusal Perera’s dominating 49.

But the day belonged to Thisara Perera, who soon took the attack to the opposition with his 26-ball knock that was laced with a four and 3 sixes.

Chandimal, leading the side in place of injured Angelo

Mathews, played the sheet anchor’s role to perfection during his 71-ball stay.

Earlier Perera ran through the Zimbabwe top-order, grabbing the most vital wicket of Brendan Taylor, who top- scored with 58 before his side were bowled out in 44 overs.

The 28-year old Perera, who bowls medium-pace, was ably supported by fellow paceman Nuwan Pradeep (3-28).

Left-arm wrist spinner Lakshan Sandakan took two wickets before Pradeep wiped off the Zimbabwe tail including the prized wicket of skipper Graeme Cremer for 34. (AFP)

England clinch ODI series

Sydney

A s c i n t i l l a t i n g c e n t u r y from Jos Buttler brought England a

16-run win and a one-day international series victory against Australia in Sydney yesterday.

The hosts, set 303 to win by England after winning the toss and electing to bowl, were always struggling in their chase and eventually managed only 286 for six.

The result gave England an unbeatable 3-0 lead in the five-match ODI series, a remarkable turnaround after Australia had trounced the tourists 4-0 in the Ashes Tests.

Australia’s hopes largely rested with Steve Smith (45) and Mitchell Marsh (55), but both were dismissed at a crucial stage of the chase, with Smith falling to a contentious low-down catch by Buttler off the bowling of Mark Wood (2-46).

Marcus Stoinis made a late attempt to lift Australia with a punishing 56, but England managed to hold on despite losing pacemen Liam Plunkett to a leg injury early in the Australian innings.

Buttler, 27, was the only batsman from either team really to get to grips with a slightly slow pitch, and his late surge enabled England to reach a total which had

seemed out of their reach until the final few overs.

Several English batsmen failed to capitalise on promising starts, but Buttler notched his fifth one-day international century from the last ball of the innings as England helped themselves to 38 off the final two overs.

Buttler himself took 28 runs from the last 11 balls he faced. He faced 83 balls, hitting six fours and four sixes, in a dashing innings that gathered momentum in the last 10 overs.

Just as England appeared to be struggling against a full-strength Australian attack, Buttler found a willing ally in Chris Woakes late in the innings, the seamer making 53 from 36 balls in a match-winning partnership of 113 in 11.5 overs.

Australia recalled pacemen Pat Cummins and Josh Hazlewood for the match, the first time in the one-day series that the trio of Cummins, Hazlewood and Mitchell Starc, who spearheaded the Ashes win, had been reunited. (AFP)

BRIEF SCORE

London

Ethiopia’s Kenenisa Bekele will race Britain’s

Mo Farah in the London Marathon in April.

Bekele is a triple Olympic champion on the track and was second behind Kenyan Daniel Wanjiru in last year’s race.

“I am thrilled to be returning to London for the third year in a row and would love to go one better than last year and win the race,” said Bekele.

“Once again London has brought the best distance runners in the world together so I know it will not be easy.”

Kenya’s Eliud Kipchoge, the

reigning Olympic marathon champion, who won the event in 2015 and 2016, will also be competing in London.

Bekele, Farah and Kipchoge have won a combined eight Olympic gold medals and 12 World Championship gold medals between them.

“This is a mouth-watering prospect,” said event director Hugh Brasher.

“Sir Mo, Eliud and Kenenisa could all put forward a persuasive case for being the greatest of all time and now they meet for the first time over the marathon distance.” (BBC)

Real Madridrout

Depor 7-1

Madrid

Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo and Nacho Fernandez each scored twice as Real Madrid

came from behind to thrash Deportivo La Coruna 7-1 at the Bernabeu.

Zinedine Zidane’s troubles appeared to deepen after 23 minutes when Adrian Lopez put relegation-threatened Depor into a shock lead, but they held the advantage for just nine minutes.

The equaliser came when Nacho Fernandez turned home Marcelo’s cut-back, and the Brazilian full-back claimed another assist for Bale’s first.

A cross fell to Bale at the far post, and he superbly came back inside before curling a wonderful shot into the far corner three minutes before the break.

Bale extended the advantage just before the hour, heading home a Toni Kroos corner.

Madrid’s fourth was exquisite, Cristiano Ronaldo flicking the ball into space inside the D, fully aware that Luka Modric was arriving to deliver a beautiful sidefoot finish into the bottom corner for his first La Liga goal of the season.

The fifth goal game 12 minutes from time, this time Casemiro perfectly picking out Ronaldo at the far post to tap home his first La Liga goal since Dec. 9.

And Ronaldo had time to grab a second as he headed home Lucas Vazquez’s cross -- but he took a boot in the face from Fabian Schaer and was left covered in blood.

Madrid had already made their three substitutions so had to carry on with 10 men... not that it stopped Nacho netting a second for himself on the turn from close range in the 89th minute. (PA Sport)

Tottenham held to draw

Muller reached century in win over Bremen

London

Tottenham Hotspur missed the chance to

go above Liverpool in the Premier League table as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Southampton at St Mary’s.

Saints took the lead early in the first half via a Davinson Sanchez own goal, only for Harry Kane to equalise three minute later with his 99th Premier League goal.

Kane was unable to bring up his century, and Spurs were denied the opportunity to move into the top four on goal difference ahead of Liverpool’s trip to Swansea on Monday night. Southampton, meanwhile, remain in the relegation zone. Mauricio Pellegrino’s side, without a win in 10 league games, started brightly with Ryan Bertrand getting the better of Serge Aurier down the right flank. The England left-back fired a low

ball across the face of goal on 15 minutes which the sliding Sanchez turned past Michel Vorm, in the Spurs goal for the ill Hugo Lloris, and in off the near post.

The home crowd had barely finished celebrating a goal that temporarily lifted them out of the bottom three, however, before they saw the visitors equalise from a corner.

Kane, beginning the game two goals shy of his Premier League century, lost marker Jack Stephens all too easily and had a free run to head home the set piece for his fifth goal in his three games.

Tottenham were also missing Christian Eriksen who, like Lloris, was ruled out with illness, and Mauricio Pochettino’s side were unable to take control of the game. Indeed, it was Southampton who were creating the clearer chances. (PA Sport)

London

Thomas Muller reached a century of Bundesliga

goals as Bayern Munich fought back to beat Werder Bremen 4-2.

Muller and Robert Lewandowski both scored braces as lowly Werder gave Bayern a real fright at the Allianz Arena.

Jerome Gondorf had fired the visitors into a 26th-minute lead and Werder were level in the final quarter when Niklas Sule put through his own net. But the visitors were denied what would have been a precious point when

Lewandowski and Muller struck in the closing stages.

Werder had travelled to Bavaria with little cause for optimism after conceding 32 goals on their last six league visits to Bayern.

But they almost claimed a seventh-minute lead when Ludwig Augustinsson crossed from the left and Max Kruse’s header was deflected onto the post by Juan Bernat’s faint touch.

Franck Ribery saw his low drive held by Jiri Pavlenka in the Werder goal, but Bayern were struggling to go through the attacking gears. (Espn)

The world number two won the biggest title of her career at the WTA Finals to end 2017 but does not

She said: “I think you can tell my confidence is pretty good at the moment. We’ve played four matches. There’s still three to go. There’s still a long way. So I really just focus on the task ahead of me.”

Wozniacki has had to answer questions about her grand slam-winning potential for the best part of a decade but no longer worries about what might be.

She said: “When you put in the work, then you just hope that’s enough. If it’s not, then you go back to work and try and get better. For me, it’s no pressure, just go out there and have fun.”

Suarez Navarro had a much tougher match on Sunday, recovering from a set and 4-1 down to defeat Anett Kontaveit 4-6 6-4 8-6. The Spaniard and Wozniacki have met seven times before, with Wozniacki winning five but none of them easily. (PA Sport)

Daryl Impey winsTour Down Under

Adelaide

Mitchelton-S c o t t

finished off the 2018 Santos Tour Down Under with the overall win for Daryl Impey as Andre Greipel

won the final stage of the race

for Lotto Soudal. Impey had no

troubles coming through the last stage

of the race, winning on countback from last

year’s winner Richie Porte (BMC Racing).

Tom Jelte Slagter (Dimension Data), another former winner of the race, completed the final overall podium in third.

The stage spoils went to Greipel, however, with the German coming around Caleb Ewan in the final few meters to take his second stage win of the race.

The Lotto sprinter won stage 1 and kick-started his season in fine form. Coming into the finale of today’s stage it looked as though Ewan had the measure of his rivals. He opened up his sprint and immediately created a gap on the likes of Peter Sagan and Elia Viviani.

Even Greipel appeared to be caught out initially and was forced to make a huge effort just to draw himself onto the young Australian

rider’s back wheel. With the line coming into view

Ewan began to tighten up, and Greipel sailed through to take a close win.

After crossing the line the German raised his arms in victory, as Ewan congratulated his rival with a pat on the back.

Peter Sagan finished third on the stage but in truth, he never really challenged the two fastest men in the race. The world champion leaves the race with a stage win and a spell in the leader’s jersey as his reward.

The stage was marked by a series of mini-breaks but it was Logan Owen (EF Education First - Drapac pb Cannondale) who was a constant presence off the front of the peloton. (cyclingnews)

Rafael Nadal was given a rigorous examination of his Australian

Open title credentials in a four-set victory over Argentina’s Diego Schwartzman.

The Spaniard dug out a 6-3 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 victory – but it was a display that eroded any aura of invincibility as he limped into the quarter-finals.

The world number one is rarely upstaged from the baseline, but his groundstrokes were tame compared to the artillery on the other side of the net.

In an often breathtaking clash boasting some sumptuous shot-making, the Spaniard was stunned

by the hard-hitting Schwartzman who broke him three times before claiming the second set at Rod Laver Arena.

Indeed, Schwartzman could – and probably should – have broken early in the third and fourth sets, but he fluffed a flurry of opportunities as Nadal weathered the assault.

The 16-times grand slam champion responded with typical grit, raising his defensive game to blanket the 24th seed’s firepower and claiming the win on the third match point with a rocketed backhand return down the line.

Nadal’s experience ultimately told as he booked a last-eight duel with Marin Cilic.

“I was able to keep fighting until the end, it was the first big match that I played in 2018,” Nadal said.

“I started later than usually (knee soreness pre-season), one match like this probably helps because that’s confidence for myself, knowing that I can resist almost four hours on the court, playing at the good intensity, so quarterfinals already, that’s great news, I’m very happy for that.” (Eurosport)
