He responded that they would be arriving in Tampa that afternoon on the “hurricane special”. They had been scheduled to fly out of Michigan on Wednesday, but applied for a variance to allow an earlier departure due to the path and anticipated time and location of Hurricane Michael’s landfall in the Florida panhandle. My reason for the text was to arrange to meet with George and Kathy to interview them for this short article. I knew they would be returning soon for Bill’s Beer Run. George has been the coordinator and manager of the team of volunteers who grill hotdogs for Bill’s Beer Run for the past ten years. George and Kathy Dubro moved to Sarasota in 2001. Kathy has been a dedicated runner and George a dedicated MTC volunteer. George was a very competitive tennis player. For the past couple of years, George and Kathy have spent their summer months in Michigan. They have scheduled their return to Sarasota because of George’s commitment to provide the grilling service for BBR. Well, sometimes the weather, autumn leaves and exceptional biking trails where their condo is located are just too appealing to commit to leaving early enough to be settled back into their Sarasota home in order to get things ready for the BBR race date. Someone else may have to be recruited to be George’s replacement! George really enjoys the BBR atmosphere and the comradery with his team of Dave Low, Alex Jarren, Don Grafton. Bob Rose, and Ed Schmidt. But BBR is not the only time that George volunteers for the MTC events. When George and Kathy were spending most of their summers in Sarasota, they were regulars at the summer beach runs, the December 5k event at Community Haven, and the list goes on. I sent a text to George Dubro last Tuesday morning (October 9th), asking if he and Kathy were here in Sarasota.

As I sit to write this, it is one week until BBR. This is one of my favorite weeks of the year. I know you are thinking, who could possibly like race week? It all starts with packet stuffing. I get to preview all the goodies our runners will get (Yes, new magnets and koozies), and I love seeing all the race shirts piled up and ready for our runners. Then we start packet pickups. This is my chance to put faces to all the names I see throughout the year. With so many wonderful volunteers, the work is light and the opportunities to chit-chat are numerous. Everyone is in great spirits and looking forward to race day. What could be better?!

We had another incredible committee this year, with Tom Bedford and Felicia Cox leading the charge. Planning this event is a huge undertaking with many challenges and time commitments. Every volunteer that helped throughout the process was a vital force in making the race a success. My deepest gratitude our 2018 Diamond BBR Race Committee, Jane Molaro, Ed Wolfe, John Cox, Kimmy Collister-Sterns, Tom Flanagan, Sandi Taylor, Kim Hull, Rick Czerniak, Chris Deleonardo, and Lynette Tate. Our Pub Run crew was outstanding again this year. Special thanks to Lynette Tate, John Schramm, and Mike Shaughnessy for heading up the organization of the venues, volunteers (gotta love the beer stop folks), bibs, shirts, etc. Thanks again to Kreg Sterns for his outstanding shirt designs. This is only a small portion of the volunteers who make this event possible. Additional volunteers for Race Day Crew, Hot Dog Crew, Food Crew, Packet Stuffing/Pickup Crew, Pub Run Crew, and, of course, Beer Crew are too numerous to list here, but please know how much you are all appreciated.

On behalf of the MTC board, words cannot express the continued gratitude toward all of this year’s Bill’s Beer Run

sponsors of which the majority are our very own members. Your sponsorship money helps us give back to the sport of running and our amazing MTC members. Full detail of all profits will be forthcoming once all receipts are turned in and accounted for.

Our first two racing series events were both huge successes. Although I heard mixed reviews on the new 2-loop 5K route for Phillippi Shores, the food spread was outstanding and the ‘fun zone’ kept all the kids happy. The MTC was definitely represented

as I heard one name after another called for awards, especially in all the over 50 categories😊 Game Day was another great ‘foodie’race with a fast out and back 10K course, lots of free beer, great trophies, and plenty of school fight songs thanks to the ‘Party Support Fire Truck.’

November will bring us the second Care2Tri 5K, with this year being its inaugural racing series year. This is another fast course with a terrific after-party. Care2Tri is an organization working to provide the experience of running, cycling and swimming to those who would otherwise not be able to participate. Come run and show your support!

The traditional Toy/Pie Run will take place at Twin Lakes Park on Thanksgiving morning, November 22. The countdown clock starts at 8:00AM sharp, so predict your time, pace yourself, and try to win that pie. Don’t forget to bring a dish to share and a toy for Toys for Tots. Hopefully we’ll see some cooler temps by then to usher in the holiday season!

On a final note, Notre Dame is 7-0 as of this week. It could be a November to remember. GO IRISH!

Faces at the racesKathy is not currently running or racing due to a nagging

knee injury. She will miss out on running BBR. That injury does not affect her while cycling. She is a regular on the Legacy Trail while here, riding her Schlitter Encore recumbent bike (I ride one too), and while in Michigan she rides both her road bike and a “fat tire bike”. (Recumbent bikes are not well suited to riding hills or off road trails, such as the terrain they have access to in Michigan.)

George actually increased his bike riding while in Michigan this year, averaging about 75 miles each week on what he described as wonderful bike trails near their condo. He also volunteered as a “bike trail ambassador”, assisting visitors to “Pure Michigan” to select bike trails that fit their needs and abilities.

In 2014, Val and I joined George and Kathy and several other riders on a week long bike tour in Maine, coordinated by “Vermont Bike Tours”. That turned out to be a very pleasant experience, and a great way to get acquainted with a part of our great country that we had not previously visited. Sharing the experience with familiar friends made the trip much more enjoyable.

Another of the volunteer activities that George makes himself available for is as “Beach Ambassador” at the Siesta Key Pavilion. He will resume his duties there before the first of November, Red Tide, or no Red Tide! He shares that duty with Ed Wolfe, another MTC reliable who filled in for George through the summer months.

This article was not available before the 2018 running of Bill’s Beer Run, so just let me say that I hope each of you who were at the event were able to take advantage of a “Dubro Hotdog”, and all of the other food and beverage options at the premier MTC running event, and aren’t we all grateful that Hurricane Michael passed far enough to the west of the Sun Coast to allow the event to go on as scheduled without the dreadful devastation that befell the Florida Panhandle.

injury Prevention

As detailed in last month’s article, foam rollers can be extremely useful for improving the mobility of muscles and other restricted tissues. They can also be quite effective for addressing many postural issues. With aging, most individuals adopt a slouched posture with rounded shoulders and a forward head. Many neck, shoulder, and back conditions are related to posture and the amount of sitting, driving, reading, and computer/phone work we all do on a daily basis. The foam roller is a great tool to treat postural dysfunctions and the adverse effects of these activities. If it is difficult to maintain proper posture with sitting, standing or walking, imagine how challenging it can be to achieve good running posture. Improved running posture helps with breathing and circulation and promotes a more efficient running style which can reduce the risk of injury and enhance performance. Just as strength exercises alone don’t necessarily lead to improved running form, the same can be said about our posture. In addition to working on posture, you will need to practice running with good form. Talk to a qualified running coach about form drills. Educate yourself by reading or watching videos on running form so you can begin to visualize proper posture while you are

running. Run on a treadmill with mirrors in the room or take a video recording of yourself running to see where you can improve.

For postural conditions, there are many effective foam roller exercises. The pictures below illustrate 4 basic versions we use in the clinic. Lying supine with a full-length roller (36 inches) along the spine and the head supported as shown, put the arms straight out to the side and let your hands rest on the floor. Relax completely and take nice deep breaths for 1-2 minutes in this position. Also perform this with the arms bent 90 degrees, and with the arms overhead. For the second and third exercises, the hands may or may not touch the floor. Finally, lying across the roller as shown in the last photo can help improve the mobility of the thoracic spine (upper back) and can be performed with shorter rolling devices. As with the myofascial release exercises (in last month’s article), spend a total of 5-10 minutes in each session, especially at the end of the day. Your body will thank you!Dave and Kristy are avid runners, MTC members, and owners of Siesta Key Sports & Physical Therapy. The orthopedic section of their physical therapy education included extensive instruction in foot and ankle biomechanics and they have worked with many runners in their 15 years of practice.
