PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVEBy Felicia Cox

As I write, we?re in a national state of emergency. The COVID-19 virus continues to impact our community, nation and world. Officials sternly warn people of all ages to not only maintain ?social distancing,? but when possible, stay home. Beaches, state parks, bars and night clubs have been ordered to shut down until further notice. Many non-essential businesses have made the wise decision to limit customer interaction with staff or to temporarily close. These drastic and necessary measures are in place for your protection and hitting close to home for our club members.

Following the recommendations from the White House and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, race directors, consultants, coaches and schools have been forced to make the very difficult decision to modify, cancel or postpone races and group runs. Upcoming MTC sanctioned events Your Way Run/Walk 5K and the 34th Annual Run for the Turtles have gone ?virtual.? The Python 5K scheduled for April 18th has been canceled.

From the global running community, there is a stand. Road Runners Club of America (RRCA), the professional organization in which MTC belongs, recommends all members ?cancel or postpone all events/group training runs/group training programs if these activities occur between now and the end of May.? At this urging, MTC?s involvement and support for Tuesday Night Track (TNT) is currently suspended and assistance for MTC sanctioned events occurring after mid-May, including the 6 th Annual SUP & RUN 5K is to be determined. Stretching beyond the cancellation of races, MTC members arepersonally and directly impacted.

It is not often that we have occasion or even desire to stop and think of the composition of the club?s membership, particularly as it relates to profession. MTC is fortunate to have many members who work as health care professionals and they are never ?off-duty.? It was only a couple of years ago that many of us

PRESIDENT'S PERSPECTIVE (CONT'D)stood firsthand witness as one of our beloved members saved the life of another following a very hot and humid 10K event. Just last October, a group of nurses who are members of MTC came to the aid of another member following Bill?s Beer Run. These same medical professionals now need your help. The clinics, hospitals and ad-hoc facilities they work for are addressing this very fluid and rapidly growing public health threat, working around the clock to treat and save lives. At a minimum, be mindful of the order for social distancing. At best, stay home. Accountability to one another during this time is crucial to our future and a very small inconvenience to your training schedule.

Lauren Udwari wrote in an article this month that ?runners are resilient.? In the 45 years the Manasota Track Club has existed, members have endured a long list of curve balls. COVID-19 is no different and like those times in our past, we will survive and thrive.

Until we can all run together again, practice kindness and tolerance. Refrain from hording toilet paper and slaying one another on social media. You will have to face one another again, hopefully soon! And stay tuned to your e-mail and MTC?s social media site for regular updates on race modifications, postponements and cancellations. The MTC board of directors is doing our part to stop the spread and will meet on April 1, 2020 via conference call. The agenda will include but not be limited to the 2020 budget, annual scholarship awards, and, in light of current race cancellations, the viability of the 2020 New Balance/MTC Racing Series. We always welcome your feedback and recommendations. It?s your club. Make your impact!

Grateful to serve,Felicia Cox

GIRLS ON THE RUN - UPDATE

With so much going on, I wanted to send you an update on Girls on the Run and our 2020 Spring Season. We started the season with nearly 550 incredible girls, and we are determined to empower every single one of them across the finish line. We have moved very quickly to a virtual program. We are providing all girls and their families two virtual lessons each week (available in English & Spanish), and in two forms (PDF to do with other family members) and interactive videos (to do by themselves). These lessons are tied to our GOTR Core Values and each lesson features a Big Idea. The lessons help our girls get moving, get thinking, and get creative together. Our first lesson?s Big Idea is ?Our differences make us unique and are worth celebrating!? We will continue to provide two virtual lessons each week until schools resume, or our season ends. In addition, with all events canceled in the City of St. Petersburg, we are moving our 5K Celebration to a virtual event ? and hope that you and Manasota Track Club will join us! More details to come soon. While trying times, I am so proud of GOTR. We have pivoted quickly (though mindfully) to continue to serve our girls. Our girls need GOTR now more than ever. We teach life skills to navigate their world, and right now, their world is filled with uncertainty. We will continue to serve them and be a bond to keep our community strong and connected. This is what we do, and we are honored to continue to be a part of the lives of our girls, families and our community. Thank you for being there for us, so we can be there for girls! Laura Moore - Executive Director, Girls On The Run

RUNNERS ARE RESILIENTBy Lauren Udwari

Runners are resilient.

If you think about it, running is just one big resiliency exercise.

We sacrifice sleep to beat the heat, rising before dawn all summer long to get miles in. We lace up when it?s the last thing we feel like doing after a hard day?s work. We confront pain every single time we show up to the track. We navigate the uncertainty of injuries? some short-lived and some lifelong.

Sometimes, we do not finish (DNF) races we?ve trained hundreds of days for, or don?t even make it tothe starting line. But we keep at it. We persist. Running is who we are, and we embrace it in good timesand bad.

If there?s ever been a time to draw upon this resiliency, it?s now. If there?s ever been a time to do what?s best for our running community, our state, our country, our world, it?s now. As we navigate a pandemic and continue to learn more about coronavirus (COVID-19), we have the opportunity and social responsibility as a running community to lead by example.

Runners are resilient, but we have a lot of questions about what to do now and how to navigate these uncertain times. Here are few updates and tips as we face this global health crisis together.

The Manasota Track Club and other running groups (like the Suncoast Milers) and businesses near and far, have joined the social distancing movement to stop the spread of COVID-19. MTC President Felicia Cox sent an email outlining closed running stores, canceled runs, and canceled races, and will continue to inform members via email and social media.

Remember to check your local protocols as things are constantly changing. At the time of this update, running outdoors is allowed in our area. Here are the latest subject-to-change guidelines on how to#socialdistancerun:

- Run solo.- Keep 6 feet between fellow runners and pedestrians.- Avoid touching handrails, doorknobs, crosswalk buttons, streetlight poles, etc.- Wash your hands before and after you run for at least 20 seconds with warm water and soap.-

Your race is off the table. Now what? Here are great tips from RRCA certified coach Karie Underwood:

- Go back to base training. Easy, low heart rate running improves aerobic function. - Sprinkle in effort. Short moderate-to-high intensity training mixed with easy runs & proper recovery.- Do something new. Get off the treadmill and run trails. Try a virtual workout. - Do run-specific cross training. Cycle, swim, Pilates, yoga.

Please follow MTC updates closely as COVID-19 protocols continue to rapidly evolve. We are a strong, resilient running community and we will get through this together.
