As MTC President Kimmy Collister-Sterns and I were discussing the possibility of my writing for the MTC newsletter, Kimmy men-tioned that our friend, Jackie Messmer, had never been featured in “Faces at the Races.”

“Really?” I exclaimed.

Since I had moved here just a few months ago, I had assumed that there had once been a feature story written about the currently-serving MTC Treasurer, Skirt Sport ambassador, IT manager, mother-of-four, and gym guru. I had assumed that because of her bubbly personality, radiant smile, friendliness, and eagerness to help others, everyone would know her story – the jour-ney that has shaped her into the athlete and person she is today.

My wrong assumptions, however, quickly turned into an awesome opportunity to get to know Jackie better, and it’s an honor to be able to write about her now. Jackie’s story of determination, resilience, and selflessness needs to be shared with those who could use a dose of daily inspiration. So grab some Starbucks, or maybe the new Pumpkin Spice Latte at Panera, and get to know this remarkable woman who truly inspires others to pursue their passion.

Five years ago, Jackie and two of her co-workers made a commitment to start run-ning as a means of improving their health. Although they actively participated in other

sports and fitness programs, none of them had ever run more than one mile. With the aid of a Couch-to-5K program, however, each of them built up the endurance needed to complete a 3.1-mile race, and in just a few short months, all three of the then-novice runners successfully crossed the finish line the at the 2010 Publix Gasparilla 5K race in Tampa. When I asked Jackie if she remem-bered her time, she gave me an approximate number (it was 35:44, for those of you who love numbers), but said the most memora-

Well we did it! A perfect 10, not one beach run canceled. What a great sum-mer of fun runs(and “rummy bears”). We could not have pulled it off without our volunteers. Thank you to Jan Carpenter and Nancy Flanagan for being our beach run coordinators. We had to have every-one fill out new waivers this year, and you two did a great job. The sign-in process was smooth as can be.

Thank you to everyone that volun-teered (I hope this is a complete list, if your name was left off, I am sorry. Please let me know, so you can get your voluntter points):

Finish Line: Tom Flanagan, Dan Pol-lock, Guy Ealey, Mickey Johnson, Dave Burke, Paul Wilson, Dave Siegwald, Dave Low, George Dubro

Registration: Becky Wilson, Sherry Storms, Dave Low, Jo Nicolosi, Mark Kow-alski , Margaret Good, Kristy Ochsendorf, Cindi Wozniak, Chris DeLeonardo, Jan McNutt, Kimmy Collister, Ed Wolfe, Jackie Messmer

Beer: Mike Shaughnessy, Ed Wolfe, Liz Moneymaker

Water: Mark Castle, Lan Repinski, John Gee, Karen Haynes

Ice Pops: Imagine School

New Balance: For providing prizes for the “Beauty & the Beast” race

Fit2Run: For helping out (ie. squirt-

ing runners with ice water) during the Adventure Run

(BTW, Tom Flanagan, Dan Pollock, Guy Ealey and Mike Shaughnessy were all perfect 10s! They made it out to every run. THANK YOU SO MUCH!)

Is anyone having summer beach run withdrawal? I was, but now I am ready to move on to some cooler weather and the fall races!

Our first fall event is the Remember the Fallen 5k in North Port. It’s a new one on our roster. Check out the info box on the right for more details. After that it’s the Relay Races and Picnic on Saturday, October 3. See page 4 for details on how to sign up your team.

See ya at the races,

Faces at the racesble part of her race happened at Mile 3.1.

“I got a medal, and I was instantly hooked on running,” recalled Jackie.

The celebration didn’t end with the tremendous trio just sporting their finishing medals around the race grounds, though.

“Afterward, we ate a huge breakfast – pancakes, sausage, eggs, biscuits, you name it. We ate like we had just run a mara-thon! It was awesome!”

It didn’t take long for Jackie to sign up for her next race. She decided to run the Robinson Preserve 5K in Bradenton because of its beautiful surroundings, and she welcomed the challenge of running on various types of terrain.

“I just wanted to have fun,” explained Jackie, not realizing then that she would leave her Gasparilla 5K time in the dust. “When I saw the finish line, I pushed hard. When I realized I got a P.R., I got even more hooked on running.”

Jackie is now a veteran distance runner, adding a number of 10Ks and half marathons to her running resume, and amass-ing a nice collection of medals, ribbons, and trophies. She completed her first half marathon, the Women’s Half, in 2:34:44, in 2010, but shattered that record two months later at the Disney Half marathon, dropping more than 4 minutes from her previous time (2:30:37). Then, in 2014, Jackie ran her current personal best half marathon time of 2:27:25 in Fort Myers. She credited her coach, Jackie Miller, for helping her achieve her that goal, and she aspires to run her next half marathon race without pausing to walk. Jackie also has her sights set on completing next year’s Walt Disney World Marathon as a way to redeem her injury-hampered 18-mile run at last year’s Disney’s marathon. An empty medal hangar made especially for her Disney Marathon finishing medal keeps her focused on her ultimate goal.

Jackie says the hardest and yet most important thing she has learned during the recovery process is patience, and she cautions her fellow athletes to take as much time as necessary to let injuries heal.

“Nothing happens overnight,” said Jackie. “You’ll have good, bad, and ugly runs. But when you get injured, patience is the most valuable thing you can invest in.”

Nowadays, Jackie is focusing on coming back stronger as racing season approaches. She hopes to run a sub-30 minute 5K one day, and has incorporated more cross-training activities

into her schedule, such as weight lifting, biking, swimming, and stand up paddleboarding. Not only are these fun for Jackie, but they also allow her more opportunities to socialize with her friends.

“Friends are an important part of my running progress,” said Jackie. “It’s a lot harder to train by yourself than it is when you have people with you, pushing you but also encouraging you to do your best.”

And this is part of what MTC is all about: creating compan-ionship and camaraderie through running. Ever since Jackie became a member of MTC, she has seen this close-knit group of athletes come together to support each other through life’s joys and hardships.

“MTC is a family. It’s my family,” said Jackie, proudly.

She also loves that the MTC family reaches out in multiple ways to support the local community. Whether it’s fund-raising for charitable causes or granting collegiate scholarships, Jackie says MTC’s strong presence is felt at both the individual and collective levels. This is one reason why she enjoys being part of MTC’s leadership team; she gets to see first-hand how the decision-making process has affected people’s lives.

“Being able to make a difference in people’s lives is one of the best feelings in the world,” said Jackie. “We’re a nonprofit club who gives back to the community. To be a part of that and to be on the Board - there’s no better place I’d rather be.”

rate the racesBy Terry Deshaies

I rate the races based on 4 criteria: organization, the course, awards and post race party. Anyone who would like to comment about a race can email me directly at [email protected].

i will ruN For beer 4 Miler: This race takes place at Bobby Jones Golf Course. There was plenty of convenient parking and even a nice loop in the parking lot to get warmed up. The packet pick-up was quick and easy and this race has, my favorite, Tech hats instead of T-shirts and it had the race logo and motto on the hat!!

The 4 miler was running down the cart paths on the British Side of Bobby Jones. Unlike my golf game that would’ve been more like an adventure run!! It started on the first hole and went all the way thru hole 18. If you don’t have a Garmin it was nice to know how close you were to the finish line by what hole you were on. We got pretty lucky as it was mostly overcast and there was a nice breeze blowing down the fairways. There was plenty of water out on the course and it was measured a lot closer this year at 4.06 miles.

The awards for the overall winners were plaques with the race graphic on them. The age group winners got smaller plaques with the race graphic on them and they went 3 deep in each age category.

The post race party was catered by Mattisons Grill. They had a selection of gourmet popcorn, gourmet potato chips, bruschetta and of course beer provided by Big Top Brewery. The only problem was that they ran out of beer faster than my drive slices into the woods!!

I give the I Will Run For Beer 4 miler a 8.0 out of 10, the course was nice, the awards were nice, the hats were nice, but running out of beer at a beer race put this race right in the drink!!

suMMer beacH ruNs: What a great year this was for the Tuesday night summer beach run series. Despite all the rain we’ve had this summer, no races were cancelled due to inclement weather!! The only one that got changed up was the run/swim duathlon due rough currents. This year they had a variety of themed races. Everything from a basic wall run and 5k’s to skirt chasers with a flag football twist, 4 miler north/south, the pace and race, they even brought back the ever popular cross country and finishing the summer up with the Beauty and the Beast run.

This year they had more beer than ever at the post race party. Also a big thank you to Michelle Blankenship who surprised everyone with her special port race treats such as, vanilla rum gummy bears, vodka gummy worms and to finish

the summer off right a Jell-O vodka watermelon!!

As I always say…If you can run these, in 90 degree heat and 90% humidity, then you can do anything!!

seadog 5k: This race takes place at the Seadog Brewery in Clearwater just off US 19. They had plenty of parking as it was right next to a shopping center with plenty of empty spaces. They used the old style chip in the ankle bracelet, which took some getting used to…I am so spoiled!! They had plenty of jiffy johns and you could go inside the brewery as well. The race stared right on time at 7:30am, which was a nice way to try to beat the heat!!

The course was a pretty flat out, loop and back course through the neighborhoods around the brewery!! The tricky thing about the course was judging where the finish line was!! As made a hard left back into the parking lot everyone went flying by me as they thought the line was just ahead…Wrong!! They had us winding through the rows of cars in the parking lot and soon everyone that just passed me began to peter out!! I then passed all of them, but still no finish in sight!! Finally, when I was about to slow down myself, the finish line finally came into view!! Whew!! The course was marked pretty close at 3.08 miles and there were a couple of water stops out on the course.

The awards for the individual age groups went 3 deep and they were Seadog keychain bottle openers, which somehow seems appropriate.

The post race party had pasta, salad, Doritos and Lays potato chips, cookies, coffee, bagels, whole bananas ☺ my article is reaching the masses!! And of course, beer!! They had several Seadog crafts brews to try and although some took some getting used to I was able to power my way thru to the bottom of the glass ☺ This race did not run out of beer and everybody got their fill!! The only thing wrong was that they did the awards ceremony inside, where it was pretty small and very loud!! Not sure why they moved it as there was plenty of room where we were!! After a few minutes of all the noise we just headed out to the beer truck ☺

I give the Seadog 5k a 9.5 out of 10!! Excellent tech shirts, functional awards and a beer truck!!

tHe Quick 1,2,3 oN uPcoMiNg races:Canes Cross Country 5k: Takes place at GT Bray, nice award,

nice shirt and usually a very good post race partyRemember the Fallen: Take place in North Port, never done

it but have heard really good things about this raceHooters 5k&10k: Takes place in Clearwater at the original

Hooters, It’s all wings and beer ... need I say more!!See you at the races ☺

tidbits

Mtc’s MeMber autHor!Probably nearly every local MTC member read the front page

article in the Herald-Tribune a week ago about the exploits of John “Maddog” Wallace, with his 376 marathons in 125 countries across all seven continents. John had warned the guys in “ROMEO’S” (Retired Old Men Eating Out) last month that if all went as planned, he would come to the August lunch meet-ing with a stack of his newly published book “Global Runner”. It was his hope, he said, that some of the ROMEOs would want to purchase one or more copies, to get him on the way toward covering the cost of self publishing the book.

Well, I bought two copies. One to read and share with my son, Jeff, wife Valerie, and a couple of others. The other copy, I will send to an Iowa running buddy, with a request that he share it with a couple of others who are, or have been, mara-thon fanatics.

Some who know me well recognise that I am not an avid reader. Nor am I inclined to sit for long periods. The evening after the ROMEO’s lunch, I did sit down and begin reading. The next morning, I read several more pages before I tackled a couple of handyman projects. Later that day (today), I read a few more of Maddog’s adventures in far away places. By the end of the day, I had gained a feel of what it was like to run a marathon in Rio de janeiro, Brazil; Marathon, Greece; Antarctica; in Canada above the Arctic Circle; Australia and Cozumel,Mexico; Prague in the Czech Republic; and Stockholm, Sweden. I even became a vicarious tourist, seeing sights and learning some place names and having a feel for conditions faced by travelers.

John Wallace is a better writer than he tried to lead me to believe, and I don’t feel that a reader needs to be a marathon runner or a “wannabe” to enjoy reading “Global Runner”. I don’t think it is even important to know John Wallace. The book cap-tured my interest right from the first page, and I look forward to finishing my “read” so I can pass it on for others to appreciate.

I asked John, “how can readers obtain a copy, other than at-tending a ROMEO lunch”? The answer, go to www.amazon.com, and enter the title “Global Runner” by John Wallace (MADDOG).

coach tiPsDrills to improve form and power:

By Kim Sheffield

Drills prevent injury through muscle stabili-zation and increase overall power.

Here are 4 drills to do anytime; make sure you’ve warmed up 5-10 min. of running before doing these drills.

luNges: develop strength of quads and hamstrings:

Feet together, hands on hips, forward 2-2 ½ feet, lower the rear leg/ 90degree angle/ creating two 90 degree angles on both legs; (make sure the rear leg does not touch the ground – could strain patella);  front leg does 90% of work, pulling body weight back to the feet together position.  Do 6-7 lunges on each leg. Work up to 10+

Hurdle overs: (these are my favorite)- develop flexibility of hip flexors and hamstrings.

Find a set of hurdles or a chair. Height of or slightly below your hip. Walk over the hurdles. Your lead leg clearing the hurdle, your

trail leg swings over in a steady motion. Walk through set of hurdles beginning with right leg as your lead leg; then switch and walk through another set beginning with your left leg.

driviNg skiPs: improve driving biome-chanics and effectiveness of heel to toe push off.

Start by skipping lightly, like you did as a child; then start toeing off the rear leg more ex-plosively, driving higher into the air. Drive your arm into the air. Do this for 50meters.

steP uPs: increase flexibility of gluteus and strengthens ham-strings.

Find a stable chair or bench. Put one foot flat on the platform in front of you. The angle of your leg should be 90 degrees.  Place one foot flat on top of the chair and allow the lead leg (the one on the chair) to pull the body weight up onto the platform and drive the other leg up. Return both feet on the ground and repeat 5x; switch legs and repeat.

the hot sPot - What’s hOt fOr runners

By Nancy Flanagan

I have been waiting a very long time for Garmin to come out with a watch for runners with the heart rate monitor on the wrist, so I could hardly wait to test the new Forerunner 225 out. It did not disappoint. Although it is a bit pricey at $299, the watch tracks all the metrics that runners are used to from Garmin.

First off, it is relatively light at 1.9 ounces and the profile is much slimmer than the 305 and other previous versions. The round color dial is 1” in diameter and there are only 5 buttons on the perimeter and they are clearly marked and intuitive enough that I was able to begin using the watch without reading the manual. You wear the band above your wrist bone to enable the small sensors on the back to connect with your skin for the heart readings. I have a small wrist and it still fits me nicely and does not rotate on my arm even with Florida heat and sweat. Also, the band is much improved from the Garmin 305 – much more flexible, soft and better looking, although the band is still a bit long for my wrist.

The Forerunner 225 is waterproof up to 50 meters and has a great battery life. It can go up to 4 weeks in watch mode and up to 10 hours if you are using the GPS and heart rate monitor. The charger that comes with it is a bit awkward but it gets the job done.

As for the heart rate monitor function – I love it! The color coded wheel shows the various zones – warm-up, easy, aerobic, threshold, maximum – in 5 different colors and a black bar denotes where you are in the zone. The heart symbol is displayed in the corresponding color in the middle of the dial right under a large set of numbers showing your actual heart rate. It is calculated using the basic 220 minus your age formula from the data you enter into the settings. This is the best heart rate monitor screen and display that I have found and it is very intuitive. If you reach a level too high or too low, the reading will continue to dis-

play but will indicate “no Zone”. I found that the heart rates being displayed on my runs were consistent with what they should be so I felt the piece was definitely accurate. one thing to note, however, is

that this watch is not designed to take a resting heart rate.

The other screen is divided into 3 areas to show the basic running metrics – distance, timer and pace and the display is large enough that I can ac-tually read it without my prescription glasses. You can customize the screen with the metrics that you want if the defaults don’t work for you. There are many other features that you can track such as daily steps, calories burned, sedentary vs active, and it even has a sleep tracker although I have not tried these functions out yet.

overall, I am very happy with this new Garmin and for my needs, it is the perfect tool for both training and rac-ing. I would definitely recommend this watch to anyone looking for a wrist heart rate monitor built into a running watch. I think it is worth the price! You can find this item online or at Fleet Feet Sports Sarasota - $299.99.
